Creighton Post Game Thread

Hass, Stew and Solo(on offense) played well. We really struggled defending Neal. Reed and Alex really both struggled. Reed too slow guarding high pick n roll and not aggressive enough on the boards. Alex just struggled on those shots in the lane that Stew drilled. We really need to run plays for Solo at the end of games until Liam gets back. The errant pass by Samson and the offensive foul by Alex both loomed large down the stretch. Refs blew call at the end. Plain and simple. I'm numb to their incompetence at this point.

Solo is a great catch and shoot guy. If we are doing our job screening he should be getting a minimum of 6 or 7 open looks a game.
This wasnt an olympic team of defensive goliaths we were playing against from the outside.

Nothing we ran got Solo and open three after the first few minutes. Maybe that is something we should try to do.

We missed so many shots at the rim today, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We kinda stink right now.
I think both you and Navery are correct. If AK plays better on both ends and Ball doesn't allow Jamiya Neal to start cooking, UConn wins the game regardless. And that might be it full stop for you. But Creighton only having 5 fouls after 39.5 minutes of game time seems far fetched. That's 5 fouls in the entire game. I mean come on.

Tough loss. I thought it was nice to see Stewart really step up. And honestly, I'm tired of the complaining about the refs. UCONN is far and away the jewel of the big east. If they really wanted to do something about it, they would throw their weight around and get it solved.
Nothing can be done. No other conference wants us.

Worst loss of the year. This one is going to really hurt with ranking & seeding. Losing at home as a favorite to a BE rival.

Bottom line is this team is really struggling executing down the stretch on both ends of the floor. Half-court offense is just too stagnant & inefficient. Teams are feasting on us at the foul line.... again! We only got 5 FTs all game at home?!? This felt like we gave this game away - with bad fouls on both ends in the last 2 minutes.

Diarra took a really, really bad shot when we finally go the lead - and that killed all momentum. Solo is the only guy you can count on consistently that comes up clutch. AK - just too inconsistent from game to game. A really bad game today.

What happened to Reed today - why is he not getting more minutes?!? Nice game from Stewart - he is starting to figure out.

McNeeley cant come back soon enough - this offense really needs his firepower! The team has heart & continues to fight, and McNeeley should hopefully right the ship on offense!

I still see this team as 3 to 5 seed come Tourney time (assuming everyone healthy).
When Reed was in the game he couldn't stay with their big he was too slow to get back and cover. Samson athleticism and ability to get back on the big was why he was in for so long.

We played ok. Neal was the difference. When he plays like that Creighton is a really good team. He just doesn’t normally play like that. 75% of that is on our defense, the other 25% you tip your cap. He made some tough shots. We’re ok. Creighton probably played themselves into the field today. Beat Butler and get Liam healthy. We move.

After SJ got the offensive rebound, no one came to get the ball. First he had to dribble and then the only open guy he saw was across the floor. No one coming to the ball made that play doomed to fail.

I may ask for the moon. But he could be a game changer for us if he can shoot that 12-15 footer at free throw area. It's there all the time and he can do it.
After watching him shoot free throws I absolutely do not want to see him taking that shot ever

If they ever implemented this, it would go the way of the pass interference reviews in the NFL. Refs would make it immediately and very clear that they would refuse to overturn anything with that much judgment and admit fault.
That's exactly what the NFL refs did. Even on the most blatant PIs, they refused to overturn the calls to call PI

After Liam got hurt the 2/1 game with Marquette emerged as the one we needed him back for and also matched with up the timeline.

In the seven games before then, I thought 5-2 was a reasonable goal. HAD/HAVE to win the three home games against PC, Butler, and DePaul. Then find a way to split the four others (@ Nova, @ Gtown, vs Crei, @ X). We’re 1-2 in that grouping (and obviously still have Butler and DePaul, too). What really hurts is that 3-0 on those is maybe five free throws away, but I digress.

Now, go take care of Butler on Tuesday. But be ready for Xavier. It’s a raucous crowd. They’ll have Freemantle back. But if we win that and take care of business in those other two home contests, we’re 16-5 going into the Marquette game and at that point I think still have all of our goals in front of us. Anyone writing off the season or even using the word “bubble” right now is out of their minds. Let’s see where we are seven days from now. It’s all still there for us.

I simply cannot watch Stewart and Ball be on the court at the same time anymore. According to Evan Miya, they're both bottom-10 defenders in the Big East (min. 200 possessions) even after Stewart played well vs. Dixon at Villanova.

I'm just going to point out some positives, because the negatives were covered.

Stewart is making himself out to be a legit 6th-man wing.

We wondered if Solo's 45%+ shooting was going to be an early season anomaly. It was not.

Samson is really getting comfortable in his role on offense. Finally passing the ball well.
We knew Solo was an amazing shooter but he's showing more and more offensively each game. Now the defense has to be fixed.

With McNeeley back we will have two primary options to go to when we need a bucket late in McNeeley and Ball. It should be three with Reed. Hass and Jaylin can also do it in a pinch. AK isn't that guy unless it's an open three or a cut for a layup, Hurley needs to get that through his head.

Some people here have no concept of what it actually means to be on the bubble
True but toughest BE games are still to come so UConn can rise or fall rapidly, this is the "easy" part of the schedule.

Starting with next weekend at X the schedule gets much tougher the rest of the way. I think once Liam gets back we'll be fine but hopefully that's sooner than later.

I may ask for the moon. But he could be a game changer for us if he can shoot that 12-15 footer at free throw area. It's there all the time and he can do it.

The reason why it's there and Hurley isn't encouraging him to take that shot is likely because he CAN'T do it right now. Our coach is going to discourage a player like that if it's in the bag

.-.
Hurley is a fast learner. I hope after this season he never again assembles a roster this void of shot creation. It’s too reliant on sets and very easy to game plan against for the elite coaches. Guys like Newton and Spencer could get you a bucket. Right now that guy hasn’t emerged for us. Losing Liam made it even more alarming.
