1st Quarter, UConn v. ECU.

I think this is a travel. But no strong opinion. You make the call!

I think your video is blocked. Is this the time when Geno mouthed "no way"? At the time, at least, I agreed with him.

Tried that, Nan. Message; resulted in: "The specified URL cannot be embedded as media".

Tinkered with this awhile this AM. Tried, to no avail, pasting

the GIF link: Collier Travel? GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY
HTML5 video link: Collier Travel? GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY
Short link: Collier Travel? GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY
and
Embed code: <iframe src="Collier Travel? GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY" width="480" height="270" frameBorder="0" class="giphy-embed" allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href="Collier Travel? GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY">via GIPHY</a></p>

Could not get the GIF to appear in the message body . . . regardless of pasting into the link, media, or image on the toolbar.

Oddly, the GIF did initially appear in the "Preview" window just before I posted.

Mayday.

Yes, it was. Too fast for my eyes at the time.

I noticed, back as far as the early '80's, as the player's games improved exponentially, that refs often bit on the head/shoulder fakes and called travels when the feet never moved. We video'd the games and verified this time and again after.

During that time, we had a number of players from Spain, and the moves they brought with them, which we see all the time now, had refs punishing that pea all game long.

I think I see this at least once/game. Of course, I have to rewatch the video to confirm.

On this, it appears the zebra bit on the spin move. I can't see the travel.

Travel - I think both feet are up and down. But much less egregious than the 4-steps-carrying-the-ball-like-a-football that many iso-game “stars” get away with under the pretense of dribble continuation.

Looked good at the time ... I think Phee decided that she better start doing a spin move here and there before a certain freshman makes her look like a copycat!

:D

Honestly I did not think it was a travel in real time on TV, but I have not seen the replay yet.

Here is the GIF (from Gifs.com; this site is on the list in Learning the Boneyard, Lesson #5; not so, giphy.com, which is the site from which the failed GIF originated).

It looks like she started with her right foot as her pivot and switched to her left foot for a pivot on the spin move. She needed a dribble with the spin move for it not to be a travel.

Yeah, an extra step taken essentially adding a second spin.

Also, she shifted the original pivot foot (right) slightly before continuing the move, although small stuff like this is usually overlooked at game speed.

Good call by the Ref! I stand (sit) corrected.

I would file it under "technically a travel, but many refs (incl. in the pros) would not call it."

Yep - this would probably not be called in the W

See this clip of Catchings (real time then slo-mo replay). To my eye it's essentially the same grouping of footwork, even down to the little shuffle of the initial pivot foot that Napheesa had as well.

Great move in the pros! Travelling in WCBB (and also in the rulebook)!

:p

For your slo-mo and super slo-mo viewing pleasure. Unfortunately right now I can only produce this in standard video....sorry.

To me, as I understand the rules, it was a travel as soon as she re=planted her right foot to take the shot.

The luxury of obsessing over a travel call! :p Still, it passes the time between games.

Yeah, it's a travel. Once her right foot is established she then moved it before pivoting then took her step. It's a "Jordan" travel and is rarely called since Michael in either Association. Should it be called on the amateur level? Yes. I think more often. But as noted by others the athleticism of today's players puts an increasingly heavy responsibility on modern officiating.

"Here. I hold it towards you."

Travel or No travel......So Uconn wins by 59pts. I don't think ECU is going to feel any better about the loss.

Refereeing is not easy. Calls are made in real time. They don't get to look at a call over in slow motion. Sometimes they are wrong. They can't see everything. On this play, the ref was watching her feet, and made the right call. Geno was on the other side of the court, and was probably NOT watching her feet, but watching her whole body instead. From Geno's perspective, she didn't travel, but the slow motion replay says she did.

The play that is the hardest to call is the charge/block call, because it's subjective. Two people sitting side by side can see a charge/block play and see it differently. The difference lies in their interpretation of what constitutes and charge, and what constitutes a block. Another factor in one's opinion of a charge /block is whether you're looking at the game with your eyes, or with your heart. Admittedly, I've been on both sides of that observation platform. No doubt, many times coaches have looked a replay of a game and realized that a call/play they argued was actually called correctly. How many times have you ever seen a coach (during a news/press conference), admit to a call that he/she argued was in fact correct after viewing the replay?

In the NBA, you can make 1 dribble from half court, and go in for a layup.

In the NBA, you can make 1 dribble from half court, and go in for a layup.

The rule is when you pick up your dribble, you can take 2 (TWO) steps then release the ball. LeBron and many others regularly take 3, and it's seldom called. But, it's only traveling if they call it. :D

After watching it in slow-mo. I still say it's not a travel. I have never seen a person complete a spin move then take a jumper without "replanting" their feet (if the replanting is what technically causes it to be a travel). That would be called a pirouette, which I don't think they do in WCBB. If you're dribbling more than once while trying to complete a spin move then there was no reason to do one in the first place. It would completely defeat the purpose of the move altogether.

Since we are talking about spin moves... anyone remember this travel?

The travel was called and the basket didn't count, if it had we would have won by 63 points.

I see a small difference. Crystal spins off her left foot, keeping it basically on the floor, and then takes 2 steps. I think that is good. Pheesa lifts the foot that she spins off of just slightly and replants it. I think that's why it was called. In real time, it looked good.

I thought the ref was awfully quick to make that call considering there were some traveling going on by the Pirates.
