Listen - we grant women college players a mistake because of youth - Griner's punch being the most obviously glaring example, so I am willing to do the same for the guys - not sure how old he is, but ... Just because someone is 6'8" and 250 pounds does not mean he has a fully developed adult mind. He is being punished as he should be, but lets not equate this to anything more than it was, a moment of frustration, that hopefully he truly regrets. It was not a dangerous play that seriously threaten someone else health.
This is not another player, it is an official. Our youth has no respect for themselves let alone people in charge. Sad that it happened but this conduct can not be tolerated. Choke a couch, tackle a referee where does it end?

For the record, neither can lashing out at another player. I agree with you in theory - but I'm not even sure why this should be compared to Griner's sucker punch (not that you are doing that).

It's a bad video that shows a player looking up at the ref, then sticking out his foot to trip the ref. There's no way to mistake his intent. I don't know what the punishment should be, because I don't know what the rules of MCBB state. But I would think a 3-5 game suspension would seem appropriate...

Why should it be up to MCBB officials? It should be up to the police.

Say you exchange words with somebody in a bar. You get up to leave and as you walk away the guy deliberately trips you and you fall to the ground. Injured or not would you consider that you had been assaulted? Battered? Why should it be any difference just because a game was going on.

Yeah, can't agree with you there. I honestly don't know how the laws apply to games being played - certainly if someone pulled a gun or a knife, the law would get involved...

But (and I can't believe I'm going to make this comparison especially after saying what I said above), but if Griner was not arrested for her hay-maker sucker punch of Barncastle, I can't see how tripping a ref would lead to police or legal action either. Kermit Washington sucker punched Tomjonavic in the fact in 1977 and got a 26 game suspension. Griner was suspended for 2 games following her punch. I do think Reid should be punished - he was ejected from the game. Maybe 1 more game suspension?

What Reid did was not even close to what Griner did. If you can explain why she was not prosecuted for assault and battery, then I might agree with you, or at least be able to debate it, but tripping a ref is not in the same category as a hay-maker on an unsuspecting player. It's just not...

I was with you until your last two sentences. But, I don't agree with that last line at all. That trip could easily have taken the ref out of the game, landed him in the emergency room, lead to a career ending injury, or possibly even permanent paralysis. It's the same as a sucker punch, and all of those scenarios (and worse) have resulted from sucker punches. In my opinion, what he did was very serious, and his discipline should be appropriate.
Definitely not the same as a sucker punch. I think you're overreacting a bit. Emergency room, from a trip? No way. There was a high school bball coach that chocked or sucker punched a ref. I think it happened at Neshaminy, in PA. He's already back teaching.

Interesting list and more than I thought, but the majority on that list is coaches/parents/fans which is a whole other issue.

Yes - but would you get on your cell phone and call the cops and press charges? Or if there was a cop in the bar, do you think he would make an arrest, or just step in and try to defuse the situation. If there was a bouncer, the guy would probably be thrown out - which is what happened in the game.

And the player has been suspended by his team for 4 games - good move on their part, and who knows if the conference or the NCAA will add to that after review.
