It's gotta suck to try to be an NCAA coach nowadays. You need head coaching experience to get the big job (in most cases) but with NIL and the portal it has got to be super difficult to build anything sustainable with a mid-major or, if you're lucky, succeed at a "lesser" P5. Basically, if you find anyone you can build around, it's a virtual guarantee they will bounce to the higher bidder.

And even then it might not be enough. Tobin Anderson had decent success at Iona, made the MAAC Final this year and was fired after 2 years

I think they got greedy with Pitino's success. 16-17 and 17-17 are really not bad records for a coach's first couple years in a program. He's not a GOAT candidate like Pitino, but the guy is a decent coach. Probably better than most of the guys they could hire.

It shows how quickly fortunes change. Tobin was the talk of the town with the limelight on him after his #16 FDU defeated #1 Purdue in the first round of 2023. How many times was his audio clip played of him telling his players after the play-in game "the more I see Purdue, the more I think we can beat these guys"?

Now he is mostly forgotten and he got fired a few days before the NCAAT.

I think that's why more top assistants are sticking around longer and waiting for the right position. One with enough resources and maybe history to give them a decent enough roster, in a weak enough conference, to make some noise. 10+ years ago, are Kimani and Luke still on our staff?

Kimani makes $850k and Luke $750k. That's similar to many major head coaches and a LOT more than mid/low major head coaches. Tom Moore is being paid $375k which is more than many or most mid/low-major head coaches and he has had a lot more stability.

He is still young IMO at 47 for so much experience at both Memphis and Georgia Tech. I didn't realize that he coached Emeka as an AAU player in Texas. Sounds like Josh is a tireless recruiter which should help in this new age.

I didn't know that either. I think he is a great coach. I wonder if his recruiting experience under the old guard will play or will he call it a headache not worth the cost. I'm still very intrigued by how coach longevity will be effected by this new way.
 
I think Pastner is a lot better than your average coach. It's a good hire, especially for a school like UNLV.
 
What is the status of all of the big east coaching jobs. Villanova is currently open, Xavier is currently open. Got to think Seton Hall and Providence have Holloway and English on thin ice. DePaul has to be happy with Holtman, Butler seems good with Matta. And then as long as they don't get poached UConn, Georgetown, St. John's, Marquette, and Creighton all have their guy. We agree with that or do we think there's more to it?

Any chance we see Holloway or English replaced this summer? Probably would have happened already if it was going to happen. Who do we think fills the Villanova and Xaiver jobs?
 
Shaheen shouldn't be on thin ice. His team was absolutely devastated with injuries this year.

Villanova seems to be trying to get Willard, but he may be stringing them along to get better stuff at Maryland. Richard Pitino seems to be next up.

Xavier seems to be going for Chris Mack, which could potentially open Charleston for Luke Murray (he's got connections to the area and they pay enough to be able to shake him loose).

Yeah Prov and SHU are likely hot seat situations to varying degrees of hotness. Matta at Butler is on hot seat with a good recruiting class coming in, also on retirement watch.

Cooley and Holtmann are new and have time. Shaka and Hurley are locked in. McDermott could be poached (has been in some rumors), but seems like he's resistant and older so may also be locked in. Pitino is probably too old for another job.

Martelli to VCU, so no Kimani there. Wonder if Bryant looks to go after Luke Murray. My guess is he'd stay at UConn but that seems like a reasonable first job

Who is Seton Hall going to get that is an upgrade of Holloway? Seriously, who?

Matta should pack it in. He looks like death warmed over, and it is not working out this time around.

I like English. Providence burned two seasons on Hopkins, who just didn't work out, and PC doesn't have the NIL to eat it on a player like that. I think they could be competitive as long as they don't whiff on a star again.

Who is the ad at vcu? Whoever it is, gets it. It’s just one good hire after another.
