Just wanted to give a shout out to Saniya Chong on her first career college basketball game. 8pts, 4reb, 2 ast and zero t/o.

Nice way to start young lady!!!

Cant wait to watch you play the next 4 years.
I think she's going to be terrific. There's a reason she won 2 NPOY awards. A lot to be excited about in her future. I watched the game and she's not as slender as I thought. She looks sturdy and strong. Point being she should be able to absorb contact decently well when she drives to the hoop, which seems to be something she will be doing a lot of...!

Geno has said recently that when she drives she scores on layups and that does not happen often for other guards. She made one drive down the middle of the lane today and layed it up and in with her left hand. The wife and I both went " WOW"

Would you believe that on another board, I read that she goes to her left too much? The anti-Montgomery.

During the post game presser he related how when Hartley was sitting next to him he told her that UConn hasn't had a NY guard that could pass like that since Bird. Ouch! LOL

Best left hand I’ve ever seen on an incoming freshman………..As Saniya continues to get more comfortable with Geno’s offensive / defensive schemes, and the on court tendencies of her fellow teammates, I expect there will be a lot more “WOW”S” coming from the stands at Gampel Pavilion, the XL Center and the various home venues of our opponents.

I’m sure it will take a while for Saniya to feel completely comfortable on the floor…….hopefully it will happen this year…..the timetable is different for each incoming freshman. When she’s on the floor now, it’s obvious to me, she’s deferring to her courtmates (as well she should, being the new kid on the block)…….trying to smoothly blend in and set them up for layups or open jumpers….and….on rare occasions……look to score herself when the opportunity presents itself.

I can’t wait for the time when she’s comfortable enough to drop four in-a-row-from 3’-5’ behind the 3pt line, because her defender was giving her the “open” shot……….or when she really shows how fast she is with a lightning crossover and blow by of 3 defenders on her way to a layup, a dish or an old fashioned 3 pt play………..you saw a little of that today when she went coast-to-coast and scored with her left hand……also when she went down the lane, crossed over, around a defender and scored with her left hand………..problem is she was going at about ½ to ¾ speed…………I haven’t seen her go full speed yet in the three games she’s played at UConn…..the only people who have seen her go full speed are the people at practice (and you know what they say)……..and I’m not even sure they’ve seen her at full speed because of her freshman comfort level at practice……….Geno says Saniya is getting more comfortable every day at practice.

Watch how fast (and good) she is when she gets R E A L comfortable.

Sorry…………I lost my head a little…………love talking about Saniya……lets chop a tree down on Monday!!

If what I saw from her in high school can translate to her game in college she will be a game changer. Her 3 point shot was scary and her ability to drive from either the left or right was amazing

never saw any highlights HS, All-Star, or YouTube etc. (tells a lot about me) but I was very impressed with what I saw against UHart. I totally understand the Shea Ralph comparison
go Miss Chong

Miss Chong to us...
But real MisChief to opposing teams...
["Behavior that causes discomfiture or annoyance in another. 2. An inclination or tendency to play pranks or cause embarrassment...."]

I agree with all the little, titillating, aspects you've pointed out.
It isn't all there, YET... but the blow-bys, the air-borne body control, the (a-bit-raw) court sense, and the feeling that she was holding back a little... (on sort of an eighth second delay ...) not yet anticipating her courtmates' moves, yet! All speak loudly...
And the fact that the Man behind the magic curtain is polishing her with the amount of minutes he's giving her speaks quite loudly.
Ring the gong... Ms. Chong. The golden ring awaits thee...

She is not the same young beautiful lady I chatted with at regionals last year. Her B Ball frame has filled out nicely since then. She also must be very smart. She never looks lost when we are running offense. She looks strong and confident.

That play was unbelievable. She looked like she was going to pass either left or right- and then blew by and through traffic, directly to the hoop. With the quality of the players we have- to be able to Impress is Impressive!!!!

I my recollection that is not exactly what Geno said. He said she drives to the hoop she scores and that is not something that freshman guards usually do. Your statement is too broad. He was specifically addressing her ability as a freshman and how she was ahead of the normal learning curve. He was not comparing her to the other guards on the team or other teams as your statement sounds.

She is already becoming a star. Just a few minutes into the first half Geno got her into the game. Yes I agree she did looked relaxed. Her hawking defense and her ability to get to the rim in traffic is amazing. Time to Tell the CTK games 4th quarter was unbelievable. She took over the game, with a tummy flu to score I think it was something like 28 pts in the qtr. Give her a couple of more games and when she starts hitting those long treys people will see why she was NPOY. How the so called experts missed her on the rankings is beyond me. I said after the Ossining CTK game she was a top 5 player. She was imo one of the best Ive seen.

What impressed me was the change in defense displayed - she got two quick fouls reaching in during the first half of the first exhibition - saw her moving her feet much better in this game and not reaching - result 23 minutes and only one foul.

Ultimately, its Mo at the one and Chong as shooting guard.
Who says that a two should't be a good passer?

Geno's (and the world') favorite backcourt is Diana and Sue. And while Diana is considered more of a '2' and Sue more of a '1' they are pretty interchangeable in terms of directing traffic and spotting up. He loves combo guards as he loves combo players - his offense runs best when no one knows who will shoot, who will screen, and who will get the assist. Is Stef going to roll on a pick and roll or will she pop out for a jumper - defender her one way and she does the other.

Definitely agree, UcMiami......a good point.

Geno LOVES to have versatility in his players. He raved recently about the fact that he has an excellent passing team (“4 ½ very good passers on the floor at one time") and that gives them an advantage over the teams they play who have one, or two good passers on the floor at any time.
