Your comments sound very much like "enabling" and when you rationalize someone's behaviour and justify them, you aren't doing anyone any favors. Duggins to me is a someone who gets away with a lot on the court because she plays with intensity and has an awful lot of talent and is wholesome looking and I think it sucks because it has no place in athletics. There shouldn't be anyone who is allowed to play that type of game without getting called on it. There aren't too many players that have ever played the game harder than Kelly Faris and I don't see her doing any of the stuff that either Duggins does or Chiney did yesterday. You can play hard and play clean and no one or nothing should justify playing any other way.
LOL. First, my comments sound like "enabling" when they have no influence over a player's behavior? Second, I started this mess by suggesting that the referees, the ones who do influence a player's behavior, should stop clothes lining. Third, I guess you're not a big fan of Dolson's. I've watched her come down the floor and, while the action and referee's attention is on the pressing at the other end, deliberately bangs the opposing center in a manner which has to cause bruising. I've seen the UConn women grab many a shirt, which is more deliberate than Ogwumike's clothes lining, even though I think Ogwumike's actions are a much bigger problem that the refs have got to stop.
While some coaches encourage bumping more than they should (which Ogwumike did not do as much as Maryland, Penn State or even Dolson), all coaches want their players to play hard. That first take down by Ogwumike, the rebound over KML, was a foul but an inadvertent result of just going for the ball; the type of effort EVERY coach wants, including from players like Faris. It's up to the refs, more than the coach and certainly more than us "enabling" fans, to manage that, and they should have managed Ogwumike's use of her forearm up high. That does not make her a dirty player any more than Dolson, Charles, Jones, Hansmeyer, et al are dirty players when they intentionally go out of their way to bump an opponent, or any number of UConn players are dirty because they intentionally grab a shirt. One might accuse UConn fans like you of "enabling" our players by claiming they are not physical when they are, but don't you worry, you are not really enabling Dolson's next punishing body blow. That's still up to the refs to control.
