UVA making the CFP will cause the following,So #14 UVA moves up to the #11 CFP slot and Memphis to the #12 CFP slot. The ACC and The AC have their advantages.
Automatic bids are given to the 5 highest ranked conference champions, so as an independent without a conference to win we are not eligible for an automatic bid, including the "G5 Bid". UConn would have to earn an at large bid the same way Notre Dame does by being ranked in the top 12/11 in CFP rankings. Can someone explain UConn’s path to CFP?
I thought I read somewhere that UConn can’t make the CFP. Not specifically this year but in General.
If we’re the highest ranked G5, would we qualify?
It depends on how high we are ranked. Currently the G5 autobid goes to the highest ranked conference champion. If we're ranked top 10 then it's possible. Especially if all conference champions are ranked top 12.Can someone explain UConn’s path to CFP?

In most years there are at least two conference champs (this year it is ACC and G5 conference champ) that are not in the top 12. So that means UConn would have to be a top 10 ranked team. I think next years schedule if UConn goes undefeated they would have a chance to make the CFP. I think this years schedule was to weak based on SOS even if UConn went undefeated. We can only make it as an at large, which would require not only an exceptional regular season, but also some good fortune where there won't be enough P level schools to fill out all of the at large spots.
Thanks. With my tinfoil hat I do think if UConn had been undefeated this year and still outside the top 12, the committee would have figured out a loophole to give UConn the "G5 Bid" to avoid the outrage of leaving out an undefeated while also limiting the number of non P4 brands in the playoff.
I don't think G5 is conference champ only. The 5 highest-ranked conference champions receive an automatic bid and then the rest are at large. It just works out that all the at large bids go to the P4.Thanks. Didn’t realize G5 was conference champ only.
So UConn has a path, just get into Top 10 ranking….
Yes that could happen. If Duke had won the ACC this year (low probability now with loss to UVA) the ACC champion could have been lower rated than two G5 conference champs. It is the top 5 ranked conference champions. No special treatment to the P4.I don't think G5 is conference champ only. So I think in theory, you could have conference champions from Big Ten, SEC, Big XII, American, and Sunbelt if the ACC was complete garbage. Then a second program from the American could get in if say North Texas and Tulane were both Top 10. I could be wrong though.
They are sort of a weird case. They have probably the best win in Georgia, and definitely the worst loss in FSU. They definitely can't afford a loss to Auburn though.Alabama doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs. I said what I said.
Given the winner of ACC and G5 conference champs will not be in the top 12 means only teams ranked 10 or lower that do not win their conference will make the CFP. The interesting one to me is Michigan. If Michigan beat OSU (assuming they will beat Maryland) then they will go to the BIG10 championship to face Indiana. Michigan could sneak into the playoffs and they have the history of beating OSU.They are sort of a weird case. They have probably the best win in Georgia, and definitely the worst loss in FSU. I'm kind of interested to see what happens with Oregon. They don't have any win that really seems to stand out, and it doesn't seem crazy to imagine them dropping one of these last two games.Given the winner of ACC and G5 conference champs will not be in the top 12 means only teams ranked 10 or lower that do not win their conference will make the CFP. I think there will be quite a few 2 loss teams so I do not see a 3 loss team getting in unless they win their conference.I'm kind of interested to see what happens with Oregon.
