Caroline Ducharme could soon return What that means for the Huskies

Didn't mean to hit the like button. You are right that this years' JR class is the last one eligible for a free Covid year and that's what Caroline is-this years' JR class, so she is eligible.
Caroline is a sophomore.

Caroline is a Sophmore

Edwards, Bueckers, Muhl and Griffin on this year's roster are the only players eligible for a Covid year.

She has zero chemistry with this team. I can see Lou feeling challenged for that spot in pecking order. Caroline returning is no panacea.

Well said, RockyMtblue2. You can bet once Caroline gets back in a game, almost surely slower and less game sharp than she was back around the holidays, that she will be a prime target for some of our fellow BYers in the Chatroom.

I hope she's back to good playing shape before the Big East tournament so she can really be a factor for the NCAAs.
That is probably a much more realistic goal. Caroline and Azzi can't be expected to be any help in our big game with South Carolina even if they play a few minutes. Hopefully we can ease them in gradually and still survive the rest of the Big East schedule and be close to full strength for the Big East and NCAA tournament.

In Caroline's case she wasn't fully back to normal before missing games. The recovery from hip surgery was taking longer than I expected, and Caroline's conditioning appeared to have a way to go as well, so in terms of resembling her play last year, it could take at least a few games to get all the way back.

No way either of them are playing against South Carolina.

"UConn sophomore guard Caroline Ducharme has entered concussion protocol after an incident during practice at the beginning of the week, the school announced Tuesday."

I am a bit concerned that 3 different players have suffered head injuries in practice this year. Aaliyah got her nose broken, Ines needed 7 stitches in her forehead, and Caroline suffered a concussion severe enough to have cost her a month. I know they need to go hard in practice, but they need to be more careful. I would say “use your heads”, but that seems inappropriate.

I think the game at Tennessee really took a toll on the team mentally and physically. To play the way they did in front of a rowdy crowd on the road was amazing. Next game not good, the game after that, even worse. To beat South Carolina, it has always been the post play was always the part of the game that made the difference. Going into the season our posts have been really good, and optimism towards being able to compete with SC was shared by most Boneyarders. But now, even if we can stay with them inside, one shooter, Lou, will not help us win. We need more than one option to pull out this game, and even if Lou plays like she did against Tennessee it may not be enough. We can't depend on Dorka shooting from the outside because we will need her for rebounding.
I know Azzi won't be ready, and if Caroline plays she probably won't be too effective, but having her in the game with Lou may still cause SC to cover her and loosen up the defense on Lou. I don't think she will play because I thought she would give it a try against PC, but she didn't. So guys, lets just hope for a competitive game with or without Caroline. We know we will get better by the end of February and that is encouraging.
For now, these girls will play their hearts out, and no matter what happens on Sunday, I am extremely proud of them. Go Huskies.

Lou and Dorka are using their Covid year this season.

I don't know what the level of injury CD has but if it is in fact a concussion that has kept her out this long I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't come back to play until next fall. It seems like they have had a good number of concussions lately, what is that all about? Azzi could be a different story, but if she doesn't have structural damage why has she been out for over a month?

UCONN just might have to go with the warriors they have now. They are good enough to win it all but they will need to clean up their play a little bit before the tournament.

She could get a medical red shirt
Requirements for a Medical Waiver:
1) less than 30% of regular season
2) not have played in the second half of season
3) medical certification she could not finish the season.

Caroline has played in 12 games which is 3 more than the 30% max of 9 games for this season.

Six main rotation players really- Patterson, Deberry and Ines typically don’t play too much except for spot relief. Let’s say Caroline gets some playing time- who sits while she plays? Depends on game situation maybe, but would Aubrey sit? Aubrey isn’t as good a shooter but is better defensively and excels on fast break points. Take out Aaliyah (leave Dorka in as big) or sub for Dorka and let Aaliyah be the big? Need Nika to be the point guard- don’t want Lou off the floor, but maybe if Lou needs to rest a bit?
Caroline can sub for nearly anyone on the floor. Working ' backwards," however, she is not a post player and she really is not a point guard. So, she would best fit as a substitute for a forward and/or shooting guard. That means; Aubrey, Lou and Edwards as first choices. She can give them each a rest and UCONN should not lose much offensively or defensively. But Caroline has not played for more than a month, so we need to work her into the line-up slowly. I would not re-introduce her to college basketball against south Carolina. What is the point? we can't win that one with her or without her.

I like everything except the "can't" in the last line. I'm okay with "probably won't". We just don't know how SC is going to play. If they have a bad game and we have a very good game we could win. Likely? No but possible nevertheless.

I agree completely with your analysis of Caroline's versatility. With a 6 man rotation everyone can rest since Lou can play the point for a short period and Aaliyah can move to the 5 if needed. You get another 3 point shooter, an offensive threat, someone who moves classically without the ball, a savvy player, and a fearless competitor who its not afraid to take the big shot. It changes our team provided she gets back eventually to Caroline form.

UConn plays at its best when they run the floor and their offense stays in motion. Caroline is good at both. While I agree that she may need time to get her shot back, having her in the lineup can help the other 4 players as well.

Am I alone in wishing we fans could received timely updates on UConn player injuries? DuCharme went out a month or so ago with "concussion protocol" and since then it's been radio silence. Same is true for Azzi and all the other players. We have no idea what's happening. My sense is that other teams and other sports are much more on top of this.

Radio silence? There are literally pictures of her practicing with the team today. She is partial contact in a special little yellow jersey. We've been told they think she might be back between the Marquette game and the next Villanova game but can't be sure with a concussion.

We also know Azzi has been cleared to stop using crutches and the brace, that her rehab is going well and that next week they'll know more about when she might play again.

We have so much information about these injuries, posts like this make no sense.

My guess is South Carolina. Geno is going to need another shooter for that game.
I'd be somewhat surprised if they play Ducharme against South Carolina after being out for so long...........talk about being thrown in the "deep end"...........she was still wearing earplugs less than two weeks ago and now to expect her to play in front of 15,000 hostile fans against one of the most physically imposing basketball teams in the country is not a great recipe for successful reentry..........if the game is tied with twenty seconds to go and UConn has the ball I might be tempted to change my mind......;)

Hostile fans at the XL Center? I certainly hope not.
