>>Most recently, Daniel has held the position as director of applied sports science with St. David’s Healthcare, a medical center in Austin, Texas, affiliated with University of Texas athletics. The position is defined as one that utilizes technology, techniques and an understanding of medicine, physiology, motor control, biomechanics and psychology to enhance sporting performance and recovery protocols. .

Previous to his position at St. David’s, Daniel was the head strength and conditioning coach for men’s basketball in 2015-16 at Southern Methodist University, as the Mustangs put together a 25-5 season.

Prior to joining the SMU staff, Daniel spent five years as the director of athletic development for the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans, during which time he was also personally asked by Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis to accompany and help train Davis for the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. Daniel also spent one season (2009-10) on the strength and conditioning staff of the San Antonio Spurs.<<

>>A cum laude graduate of Washington State University (1998), he was a Pac-10 First Team All-Academic selection in each of his four years and twice was selected as an Arthur Ashe First Team Academic All-American. The 6-7 power forward averaged a double-double (16.1 points, 10.1 rebounds) during his senior year and was an All-Pac-10 First Team pick. He finished his Washington State career among the school’s all-time top 10 in points, rebounds, blocks, field goals, field goal percentage and minutes played. In March, 2017, Daniel was inducted into the Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Hall of Honor as Washington State’s representative.<<

Would seem like a very good hire, strategic in regard to understanding the game damn well too. Also look at the SMU kids they were all good sized, strong kids and I'm sure he had something to do with that.

God news, maybe Chief will even applaud the decision.

The Trainers Behind the NBA’s Most-Improved PlayersCarlos Daniel

As the Director of Athletic Performance for the Pelicans, Daniel’s job is to make sure that every single New Orleans player is prepared for the rigors of an NBA season. But this past summer, Daniel’s main emphasis was working with the 21-year-old Davis during his time with Team USA. He traveled to Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, and even Europe to work one-on-one with Davis in order to make sure that he was getting stronger in the post.

“He knows that getting strong is a vital component and he’s been dedicated to it,” Daniel said back in July.

So far, that strength has been on full display during the NBA season. Davis is averaging more than 24 points and 10 rebounds per game for New Orleans and has been a handful for opposing big men, which is something that wasn’t necessarily the case as recently as a year ago.

Sounds like a good hire. Maybe we can have our players starting to look like SMU guys.

Or even better use the "conditioning" part of his title to get Eric Cobb down 20-25 because then he will look like an SMU player, maybe even stronger!

"Another aspect, arguably the most important of Daniels duties, is his attention to injury prevention, working in concert with head trainer Jon Ishop and assistant athletic trainer Mark Armour on the endeavor. One year in, the groups results in this area are glowing, as the team only missed a combined 54 games due to injury last season, less than a quarter of the 226 games missed the year prior in 2009-10."

I like it on paper. And I like that the job is filled. Check another box in our recovery from this terrible season and off season. If he is as good as it seems, it could be a huge positive.

This is a joke. A real program in a real conference would never hire this guy. We are the laughing stock of every strength and conditioning program in America. I would fire Ollie immediately. And Benedict. And by the way, who is going to do the facilities tour now? And go over the course catalog? Someone needs to do that. Is there even a plan in place here or is it all willy nilly? This is outrageous, egregious, preposterous.

Not to mention the guy doesn't even have any experience training gymnasts.

Carlos Danger, what are we thinking! He's like.... whatever! No gymnasts as @Thirty Three said, thank goodness when you consider. This is just a complete mess. I think this hire dooms our program forever. We will never be good again. Irrelevance here we come!
