Friend brought a vertical pellet smoker and his meats look perfect.

Time to step up my game! Looking at pellet grills or nice smoker. Would like one that controls temps and does long hour smoking of meats. Been eyeing the pit boss models but I have to believe there are many competitors out there.

Be nice for a quick hit meal as well. Only 2 of us but I'm ready to move on from the elementary charcoal Weber.

Easy assembly or pre assembled would be nice as well.

What are you guys cooking on?

Accuracy, sure. But I asked about speed. Latency affecting accuracy? Of a BBQ thermometer? It's literally slow cooking. A half second isn't going to make any difference.

I 100% believe they are faster. I just don't understand why a home chef would care. I use a thermopop instead of a thermopen because I've never needed that 0.5-1 second.
I guess all I can tell you is stick two probes next to each other and see. Remember I’m talking surface probe instead of meat probe.

The thermopen is more accurate than the thermopop. It's not just speed. I agree, the speed don't matter much. I bought the new one they have that is in between.

I have the smoke x2 It is to smoking meats to what the thermapen mk4 is to steaks and chicken. If you don’t have one you’re not serious about doing things right.
I got the Signals unit from them.

Green Mountain Grills and Green Egg
Agreed. Haven't gotten one myself, but 3 or 4 guys I work with have the Green Mountain pellet smoker and swear by it. Connects to your phone via Wifi so you can set it up to cook exactly how and what you want.

Anyone here have a blackstone grill? Just bought one as a second grill, so looking for some opinions/recipes for it. I heard they are really good for breakfast food.

I can already tell it’s taking a while to heat up with the new england wind, so that could be an issue at times.

Use it for tailgating. I love it. Make sure you preheat it real good or your food will stick.

I also recommend getting the adapter for a large propane tank vs using the little green canisters

Smoked Pot Roast: https://www.traegergrills.com/recipes/chuck-pot-roast
There's no reason to waste pellets once the roast is covered in a dutch oven. Just use your regular oven at 275 for 4.5 hours.
Get frozen baby onions - trying to peel two cups of pearl onions is beyond tedious.
Doing the pot roast again tomorrow.
Let me know how they turn out.
Ok. Made this yesterday. I cook a lot, and try all sorts of recipes. This kicked! Even got the "this is special" rating from my wife, who's not that into the smoker thing. I skipped the chili powder, but did the dried anchos, and I'm happy - had just the right amount of pepper influence.

Also didn't do the pearl onions, just threw in a thickly sliced big yellow onion. THANKS!

Shameless plug. Good buddy of mine has a line of rubs and seasonings out. Tonys smokin again. Theyre in quite a few grocery stores around the state. The coffee garlic has been my go to for a long time before it ever hit the market.

Any online sales? I like to try new rubs and wouldn't mind supporting a friend of the yard.

Yessir. An Etsy page as well as a regular web page. (Wasnt sure if i could post links)

I want a big green egg so bad but I have a family to support
Make a habit of checking Craigslist. They show up now and then by people moving out of state of which there should be a lot these days who are moving out of the Northeast..... It just costs way too much to move due to its heavy weight.

I have a pit boss pellet smoker that is great, but there is a huge negative with it.
Make sure that you run out all of the pellets in the hopper and auger because the humidity will cause expansion and the auger will seize up. The only way to fix it is to take the mechanism apart and clean it out. Thankfully I only made that mistake once.
I love the Pitt Boss pro series smokers, the under the grate damper is a nice feature. I believe they also make a large unit with two separate chambers, one for smoking and one with gas burners for a gas grill setup.

I have had a natural gas Weber as long as I can remember. Just moved to a new house in the sticks. No NG only Propane. I decided to bite the bullet and get a Weber Summit Kamado S6 Grilling Station. My oh my, what a terrible mistake I have been making all this time. Truly amazing.

I got this bad boy, cheaper than the green egg, but same function, materials, etc.. Expected delivery this week.

Vision Grill

Vision has been around for a while. They have some serious build quality issues and no real customer service mechanism to deal with them, but if you get a good one it's a reasonable substitute.

I had to laugh at that guy majorly undercooking the brisket and saying it's not as tender as he wanted. That was the worst paid promotion I've seen in a while.

Yeah I got the most recent model, mainly due to hearing stories about the quality of prior grills. Its my understanding that changes/upgrades have been made to their grills.

I just hope on this journey the griller is more important than the grill, or can compensate for any issues with any grill.

So we’re moving into a house with natural gas line to the outside and it was kind of a selling point when we thought we would be getting the natural gas 5 burner summit that was hooked up to it (this is my in-laws house). I ordered the conversion kit for my Weber Spirit but I’m feeling like going Kamado.

I had the Genesis and it was great. Having it hooked up all the time is well worth it. If this new house had NG then I probably would have gone with the Summit. My friend has one and it’s about as good as it gets.

Now that I have said all that, I’m glad it doesn’t have NG because the Summit Kamado is a whole other animal. The difference in taste and all you can do is indescribable as people who own all these things already knew. Gas grills are great but despite how much you pay the food all ends up really about the same. I’m sure all the Kamado’s are great but I’m a Weber fan and this has not let me down.

Am looking at Yoder pellet smoker, the YS480s,but they are expensive at $1800. But, US built, seems to be really solidly built, has direct flame option (can cook hamburgs/steaks over direct flame like regular grill, and can smoke also). Probably will either be the Yoder or, if I want to save a little money, the Rec-Tec 700 pellet grill which is $1200.

A friend bought the Pit Boss KC Combo on Saturday, and I imagine that I will be aiding in assembly and positioning when it isn't raining today or tomorrow.

Get yourself a good thermometer. can I recommend the thermoworks smoke x2? ( probe and surface) . Because the digital internal read outs and probes on the pit boss pros are out of whack. Your friend will need to adjust the “ P Setting “ too. And even after that learn what his “set” temp is compared to his actual temp. Pellet grills have a temp variance as auger feeds pellets based on its internal temp control . Pit boss more than most. My brother got same unit and I got him going good now, but that’s after saying “ dial to this to get THAT” . Otherwise it’s a fine unit. I like it. You just need to know “ true temp” and adjust accordingly.

My friend just purchased a MasterBuilt Gravity Series 1050. I have to admit I was impressed. It works like a Pellet fed Traeger or Pit Boss with precise temperature control but instead of pellets the hopper is filled with briquets, or lump charcoal and you can even put some wood mixed in with it. Also instead of being limited to 500 degrees it goes to 700 degrees and it does this it in just a few minutes.

It is also very heavy, about 200 lbs. I think.

An example temp on pit boss set to 200 on dial. Pit boss surface temp reading 300. Which in and of itself is terrible. Actual temp on my thermoworks reading 323. If you set a smoker for 200 -225 and it’s 123 degrees hotter you’re gonna waste some meat.

I second the Thermoworks Smoke. They have been putting them on sale lately too (although not at the moment it seems).
