Danny may have watched the way the Chiefs’ last game was officiated and maybe it set him off even more that this two time defending champion can’t sniff the gift calls that two time defending champion gets lol. NFL Memes was literally mocking it for most of the game, and deservedly so.

That someone played point in college does not necessarily mean those skills will play at the level needed in the NBA. Cam last year and Andre the year before ran a lot of point but the NBA didn’t look at them as point guards.

I’m not judging him by his NBA play. I’m judging him based on the fact that on one of the most efficient offenses with talent all around him he managed to shoot 40% from the field and 30% from 3.

I checked the box scores from when Clingan was out last year today. You should too and look at what Newton was doing during that time.

So it is all about his shooting. He also created for others with his penetration. He was also a good rebounder and underrated defender.

#11, 14, 18, 22, 23 all lost tonight, with only one of those losses coming against a ranked team. #15 is currently losing to an unranked team.

Texas was one of the teams to beat a ranked team.

UConn escaped with a win vs. a sub 90 NET.

This board and I have very different opinions of Tristan Newton but that’s okay. I’m hoping Hurley has better star pupils to show off his development with in the future.

This sophomore class is a great chance to do that because they’ll be here for more than 2 years. Develop these very talented young men that trusted in your coaching enough to come here. Please do not give up on them to grab a transfer guy someone else already coached up.

The first round of NBA draft is mostly guys who were ranked by scouts out of high school as top 15 players, and young foreign players who are ranked high by scouts. NBA does not care how good you are right now, they just want to draft lotto tickets(ie, young players with high upside). If you are not drafted in first round you will never get a chance to show what you can do unless you get lucky and land on an injury depleted team, or luck into a coach that somehow notices what you can do and is willing to break convention and give a second round player some minutes. Half the NBA teams these days are trying to lose on purpose, and playing an awful player who has high upside, is better than playing someone who is good now and might actually help you win games. All these teams have same road map, lose now and collect a large pool of raw young players, and hope they all magically mature into stars at the same time in the future.

Three primary reasons:

1) We don’t have a bucket getter.
2) We don’t score much on the offensive glass
3) We don’t get to the foul line.

You can get away with the first, if you can get easy points from the second or third

There was a lot UConn could do better, and this crew has some pretty severe self-destructive impulses, but they are paying hard and pulling these games out for the most part.

Yeah, I don't get the idea that UConn isn't playing hard or that there is some level of effort that we're not giving that will overcome every opponent.

We crash the boards with like 4 guys every play. We hack the crap out of people when they come into the lane and for the most part don't give up easy buckets.

If you want to argue they're not mentally tough, okay, I guess, but we've won a bunch of close games this year.

What we are is weak, as in not strong. We have younger, finesse players without a lot of muscle who play hard, but are playing against a lot of strong, ole upperclassmen. Diarra is quicker and longer than he is strong. Ball has insane shoulders/arms, but he's one positional height/weight size small. Stewart is athletic, but not particularly strong. Karaban is average size for his position. Samson has improved his body, but he's still lacking lower body and core strength. We have to use our hands to hold and grab or just get pushed aside, because we can't just use our shoulder and can't hold our ground, outside of only really Reed. This is particularly noticeable against teams with real strength and beef on the wing like Butler.

We're also just not that good in the overall sense (especially without Liam), so can't put teams away. For some reason, people on this board forgot the old phrase "everybody makes a run". We were immune last year because we were epically good. We're not this year. Everyone makes a run. Won the game.

Nope. Saying it's a lot easier coaching a team loaded with NBA talent. What has he done this year to fix flaws that were exposed in Maui? With what was supposedly a team with top 10 talent at the beginning of the year? Why is he sticking with the same old every game when it is clearly not working?

Not always true. Trams loaded with NBa draft pick have more talent than the aversge team, but they aren’t necessarily easier to coach. If fact in many cases they are more difficult to coach.

The team is way better with McNeeley and can be competitive with most anyone but.,…..not 3 peat good. Everyone is starting to get that now. I appreciate what the team has given us all.

Karaban made some big shot’s tonight that he created off dribble. I would like to see what Ball can do off the dribble. eg penetrate and them step back 2, or drive to elbow for pull up 2.

Just got back from the game.

Scrolling through this thread, can’t believe there isn’t more mention of the refs.

That was probably the worst whistle we’ve gotten all year.

Ton of no-calls and whistle swallowing in Butler’s favor all game long.

The amount of clutching, grabbing, bumping, moving screens that they were able to get away with was breathtaking.

Unreal what a biased whistle we’ve get.


That being said, Liam can’t get back in the court soon enough. This offense can’t do jack crap without him on the court.

They have two top 100 players on their team, they were 8-10 and 1-6 in league play before this game, they were playing on the road, and they were 12.5 point dogs.

I'm thankful we won but we played really poorly against a bad team at our place.

I agree he’s better than Diarra. I’m done trying to bring reality to Newton’s time here for the night lol

Wasn’t able to catch the game, just saw the box score. Not gonna overreact - it’s one game with our star player out. However, is it safe to say Mahaney is more of a practice team guy?

Newton admittedly wasn’t a great 3 point shooter - I think he took a lot of our 911 shots at the end of the shot clock (Kansas being an example of when it was noticeable due to its success), but that isn’t based on actual science.

I’ve watched the NCAA Tournament games again on YouTube, though, and he was in full maestro mode sometimes and I didn’t even appreciate it all that much in real time. His feel and ability to throw lobs from all angles and off the bounce was remarkable. A lot of the reason that last year saw us win all those games by double digits was Newton’s (and Cam’s) game management. Teams just couldn’t get traction against us.

Castle was the role player last year- he didn’t have much responsibility on offense. And Clingan wasn’t usually a go to scorer on offense either .
