Bryant Post game thread

Remember like a week ago when he was 4 for 4 from 3pt and scored 21 to beat #8 BYU?
Right, and also, can we possibly figure out this rocket science of why our 4/5th option and team captain sometimes tries to do too much when our presumptive options 1-3 are either injured or can’t make a shot, and the other starter has had a tendency so far to be in foul trouble?

I think the Alex criticism is valid but premature

We’ve had two real games so far. In one he was taken out of the game, in the other he had 21 points on 70% shooting and 4-4 on his threes

We’ve had 4 cupcake games, he had 1 bad game but averaged 17 points and 6 rebounds on 58% and 53% on threes in the other 3 (overall 14/6 on 49/41% in the 4 games)

We all agree he’s not the #1 or #2 guy. He’s had to play that role with our injuries. Unsurprisingly it has looked rough. If Tarris and/or Braylon are consistently out, we’re in big trouble. But worth noting AK’s best game of the season came against #7 BYU when Tarris was playing

If we get our whole starting 5 healthy, he’s back to being a connector piece while Silas/Reed are the main guys with the ball and Solo/Braylon are flying around the court pressuring defenses

If we expect him to take the step up and be the guy that will take the ball and make plays because we’re shorthanded, we will be disappointed just like we were last year. The alarm bells will be ringing if this happens when we’re fully healthy, but not now for me

Well said, connector, glue guy, trusted on court general. Go to guy, playmaker he ain’t. I’m just hoping Hurley doesn’t obligate himself to letting him showcase “NBA skills”. I don’t think he will. He played really well against BYU.
I’m not worried about AK, he has the mental toughness to break out of any slump. I am worried about Ball.
Did you watch him last year? He missed a free throw against Nova and couldn’t throw a ball in the ocean the rest of the year. Alex is a classic over thinker.

This team could get to a final 4 without Solo shooting 40% from three. We may not even need him on the floor.

Haven’t seen enough of Mullins to be sure. If he’s the real deal maybe, if not they need Solo to get back close to last year shooting it from 3. They can’t continue to brick 3s as eventually it will be easier to take Reed and Reibe out of the offense.

Poor 3 point shooting, lots of missed layups/put backs leading to lost rebounds, and poor free throw shooting recipe for early tournaments exit.

Better chance than not he’s the real deal. We can also go with a Smith/Silas backcourt and get better defense and playmaking. It would be great if he figures it out, but I don’t think our season hinges on it. Alex hitting threes is more important as we have no options behind him.

Alex looked great against BYU and very average last night.

Could it be, perhaps, that Tarris in the line up makes a difference to Alex's numbers. AK's assists go up, his open threes go up. DUH. My only problem is that last night AK shot a bunch of NBA threes instead of waiting for better opportunities.

"Tournaments exit" the season has just begun. We tend to get much better by the middle to the end of the season and we are still one of the top 10 teams in the country. Relax

Just so disappointed with the effort, especially on the offensive end. AK has 3 moves. Pop to corner, roll off screen, or catch, fake left and take a big move to the right. It’s so predictable and even a crappy squad like Bryant can completely game plan him out of a game. Shout out to Ross, Reibe, and mostly Silas for showing up tonight. Defense was there but man that was uninspiring and gives me no confidence if we are still down BM and TR against Illinois
I agree with everything until you state your lack of confidence against Illinois. Without BM And TR we will be hard pressed to beat elite teams except that we almost did a few days ago. We had a lead with 2 minutes to go against Arizona and, at that point, should have won. Ball and Karaban didn't do anything offensively and Koroma (who won't play if TR is healthy) attempted 6 FTs. We should have won!

Think of it this way: put us at full strength and take Peat and Burriess out of that game. Do we win by 15-20? I think so.

We very well may lose to Illinois down 2 starters but we very well may win and that point cannot be said about many teams, if any.

Yes, get Mullins and Reed back Friday and this is the best team in the country
Up there but not cocky enough to say best. Purdue and Houston very good.

PG: Demary/Smith/Uzan - Smith
SG: Ball/Cox/Sharp - draw
SF: Mullins/Loyer/Flemmings - draw
PF: AK/KDR/Tugler - KDR
C: Reed/Cenac/Cluff - Reed

I was a bit anti Purdue, but Cluff brings a lot of toughness inside, he’s a brute. They also have a solid bench. They also won at Bama and throttled a good Texas tech team. I’m not sure we could have done that even with a full squad.

Houston head to toe is more talented. They have two first round picks out there, another top kid on the bench. Their athleticism would give us problems. Very much a team that will get better with the season, just like Zona. Lots of talented frosh.

My takeaways are Reibe and Ross are getting very valuable minutes. Loving what I am seeing from Eric so far and he is an enormous addition. Ross continues to gain confidence and is a menace on defense. Karoma would typically get zero minutes but now he’s getting some playing time to earn one or two minutes as the “emergency man.”

Ball will get his shot back
Reed will return
Mullins we don’t know yet but all signs say he will be really, really good

I’m not worried

I'm not saying we'll destroy everyone in our path, but I'd go into a game with either of those teams expecting a win. Purdue and Houston are right up there along with Duke and Arizona right now. Not impressed by Florida so far but I expect that to change by March

Uh, no, he is not "earning extended minutes" because to do so would be at the expense of Reed Jr. and that isn't happening unless he's in foul trouble.

I guess it depends what you were expecting him to get. I was expecting short breaks for taris , resulting in 5-8 minutes a game. Now I think if he is on his game he gets 10-12. A lot will depend on the game situation, but in BE play I think he can be north of 8 most nights.

Not expecting Florida to be in the mix as Fland and Lee already showing their flaws. I’d agree with Duke and Zona. Bama/Oats looking the part. BYU, Louisville could be in the mix.

I believe AK was impacted following the concussion. I also he has such a funky stroke, that just being a little off technique will really cause him problems.

I can't find the quote now but Hurley said he wants Reibe at 12-14 minutes a game ideally like Clingan was his freshman year
