Fantastic hire for Providence and smart move for Hodgson. I'd freakin' loathe living in the Syracuse area while Providence is a vibrant sports team city. Say what you want about our hatred towards Providence, but they do have a dedicated, rabid fanbase. Good news for the Big East.

I thought the AAC was a better conference than the Big East?

As for the NIL, I bet they spent a lot this year, which was one of many reasons to throw English out. PC basketball is the only show in town in Rhode Island. They should have cash.

Maybe he’s great but Providence treats every new coach like it’s the next John Wooden so I’ll hold my judgment
True. I prefer waiting until he succeeds or fails before I will view him as a success or failure.

I still remember when the belief was that Keno Davis was going to dominate the northeast for a quarter century.

I think we all get this is how determining success or failure works, but thanks for clarifying.

It’s a great hire, imo. Has shown he can win at other places, was a big time recruiter at Alabama, and has the vibe for the BE. Whether he’s successful or not, who knows? But this was the correct hire for PC and the BE.

That's my quick take. He turned USF around in just a couple of years. USF! And why do people continue to use irrelevant factoids from the past to justify a current opinion? A prime recent example was all the people lamenting the fact that Liam McNeeley was drafted by Charlotte. Didn't matter to them that there was an ownership change and a complete overhaul of the front office. And whadda ya know?
They're not a joke anymore.

I actually really like this hire. When you are a middle of the pack power conference program, if you can’t poach from a similar program, you grab a guy who excelled one level below (as opposed to someone who was average one level below like English and Neptune).

I hate Syracuse way more than Providence and always will. Love this hire!

Not even a couple of years, he was only at USF for 1 year. This is a great hire for Providence

My immediate visceral reaction is this is a great hire for PC. Like you said, they have a dedicated fan base that is starving for any kind of success or relevancy in the college basketball landscape. In addition to that, the Friars are the only game in town and they some good local businesses that can load up the NIL $. This year they had a lot of NIL allocated to the team and they got a talented roster that under performed.

LOL. I couldn't help but laugh reading his name. He was terrible for Providence and pushed them further into irrelevancy after Tim Welsh. You should read what they say about him on Friar Talk. Of course all of this was said in hindsight because even Keno Davis was 28-5 with a NCAAT first round exit in his lone season at Drake before getting hired by Providence.

I hope we are also flush with NIL $ because we will need it this year. Are we?

And Pete Gillen. And Tim Welsh. And Ed Cooley. And Kim English.

The hire is fine. What I’d say is this.

If he left USF after just one season, why would he stay at PC once he gets them good enough to get a bigger offer? I set the over/under of his PC tenure at 3 years.

All could be true, but other than a few blue blood spots or places with alumni ties, I don’t think there’s any schools that can hire for the long term anymore. If he goes to PC, makes them really good, then bounces to a SEC school after 3-4 years, then PC is in a much better position than when he was hired.

This is an excellent hire for Providence. He actually can coach and clearly can recruit

Could happen. Right now the landscape has changed. Its about your NIL structure. If Providence continues to fund at a high level, it will be a desired job.

Could you imagine saying Providence is a better job than Cuse? In 2026, it is.

How so? They’re back to where they were when Cooley left trying to find someone as good or better.

Why does any coach stay anywhere? Also, who cares if he leaves? Coaches are not nearly as important as they used to be, because recruiting is about talent evaluation and cash more than sales. The days of the coach being the program and the program being the coach are long past.
