Bowl season started with the Bucked Up LA Bowl. Boise State getting boat-raced by Washington.

didn't even know this game was happening
Same here. Though it was just Army/Navy and FCS last weekend.

Whoever is saying we need an NIT to replace the bowl system is right on. Maybe I'll sim one, lol.

IMHO, most of the P-4 bowl games will survive. ESPN et al need the programming. The schools like the money (some actually make money if they don't go crazy with expenses) and free publicity. According to AI, only 1.6% of college players get to the NFL, so a bowl game may be the point for the other 98.4%. The bowl games were originally created by local chambers of commerce and tourist bureaus to attract northerners and their dollars to southern cities and they will want that to continue.

Was brainstorming this during a conversation about the bowls this morning. Maybe autobids for conference champs who don’t make the real bracket plus the next X ranked teams.
Depending on the rankings I don't think our 9-3 team would make it. Then people would complain about that instead of having a chance to watch UConn play at Fenway.

This whole bowl/CFP issue is looking progressively worse for the G5 teams. Unless the CFP expands significantly, there will only be 1-2 spots available for them every year, and currently there are around 70 G5 teams. Realistically, if the bowls phase out, those schools won't have much to play for every year except for conference titles at best.

You missed the Cricket Celebration bowl as well. A 4OT thriller between SC State and Prairie View on Saturday in front of 26K fans

USF loses to ODU 24-10. I know both teams had backup QBs. Not sure how many players opted out.
USF is on the rise and playing in Orlando so probably had a big crowd. That has to be disappointing to the fans but yeah, who knows how many opted out. I guess these bowls really are going to be a waste of time.

The ESPN site reports 15,000 at the game. I’m sure this is disappointing since Orlando is only an hour away from USF. They are similar to UConn with the fact that their head coach changed after regular season. They had an interim head coach for game and had chance for ten win season.

USF is on the rise in spending. Not sure much else will stick.

USF doesn’t have the support UConn does. They catch lightning in a bottle every 8 years or so, get ranked and people show up, then they falter and everyone leaves. They don’t have the base we have because Blue Blood basketball builds a brand and a fan base no other non P4 has. Our fan base is definitely equivalent to the top half of the P4, probably top 25-30%. Look at merch sales and NIL store sales.

No one was at the Cure Bowl. Was more attendants and employees than fans.

Was watching the game last night and was going to irreverently post that I counted 147-152 people. All kidding aside, the attendance was shown as 15,036 and I'm thinking NFW!!! I was at the UConn-Delaware game that had over 17,000 people (which seemed about right)...what I saw last night on TV didn't come close to matching that number. Bit of surprise considering there were two 9-3 teams, and with USF having sooo much upside, where was their sell-out rowdy contingent that they couldn't even pack a localish bowl in warm weather??? Meanwhile, in Boston...

Watched a bit of the 68 Ventures bowl and the crowd was sparse. Too bad they can't put these games in smaller venues and try to shrink ticket demand a bit. Or even put them on campus. I hate seeing these covid-era sized crowds.

I know, I know. Spoken like a fan, not some crook who organizes bowl games.

They do put them in smallish venues. The 68 ventures game was at South Alabama’s stadium, capacity 25k
