Bourbon & Rye

I tried this myself and didnt really care for it. Though I did like it more than the 1920 on its own. That one has this cherry cough drop note ( think Ludens if you are old enough to know what that is ) that I am not crazy about. Love that 1910 though, but I am a full on double oak stan.

Well, the 1920 was the prohibition-legal bourbon recipe which could only be sold via a prescription from a doctor so the Luden comment seems reasonable.

I was informed over the weekend people are blending the Old Forrester 1910 and 1920 in a 50/50 mix. It's called a 1915.

Take the sweeter 93 proof 1910 and mix with the spicier 115 proof 1920.

And I'll be damned if it doesn't taste outstanding.

Tried it with my son and brother in law yesterday and all agreed it tasted better than either the 1910 or 1920 did individually.

On a side note, that is my brother in law's glass with all the cubes. I was busting his balls all weekend over killing good bourbons with all the cubes.

I did make him try each of the 1910, the 1920 and then the mix neat before I let him put the cubes in his glass.

And its the really nasty fridge ice maker cubes too. Freaking yuck. If you have to use ice at least make some that isnt that, which always tastes off to me.

Mmmmmm. Wild Turkey.

Didn't know about it. Made by these guys. Bespoken Spirits

If they are still doing what is described here I won't touch it. That process makes everything taste like cardboard.

Yeah, same. We have a local place that does this and its terrible stuff. The price on the " Champions Cut " had me laughing.

Anyone find the 8 year Wild Turkey 101 in the um...wild? Have not seen it yet.

Funny you should ask. Picked up a bottlle Wednesday night here on the Panhandle of Florida.

I was looking for some Four Roses Single Barrel Selects and saw this on the shelf. $45. Easy decision.

Got it at a Total Wine store .

Anyone purchased any of this?

I bought two bottles back in 2023 or 2024. I thoughtit was terrible. I have one bite that sits on the back of the bourbon shelf at my house. It takes up space and I have no intention of drinking it.

I call those bottles " guest " or " clueless relative " bottles. Great to serve to folks who just want to be part of the group and dont know much about good spirit.

Yeah. I think I bought after 2024 championship and gave it to a friend who won our NCAA tourney pool done by blind draw. He had UConn so I gave him a bottle. We opened it up and, well, it wasn't good.
I'll hold on to it until YConn wins #7 and then I'll figure out a plan.

So, I had some back in December at Korean Air Lounge in Incheon. Loved it. Might have even posted on here about it.

Funny thing about all the reviews I have read is they are all positive about the 8 year and all agree at the $45-$50 price point it shines compared to plenty of others at that price point. Some question whether it's worth paying $20 more than the NAS 8 year which goes for about $25 and already uses 6-8 year bourbons.

That's the thing really. WT101 used to be 6-8 years and I think the dusty stuff was older than that. I think it's been more like 4-6 years for some time now. So I suspect that the 8 is out precisely because they don't want to dump older juice in the bottom shelf offering.

Enjoyed a few sips with my best best bourbon buddy today.
Sampled the Booker's 2025-4 "Phantom Pipes" batch. 126.4 proof, this isn't anything to play around with. Sip with caution but it's an enjoyable sip. High corn mash bill. Pretty tough to mask 126 proof but there isn't any alcohol burn. Sipped it neat, but a small cube wouldn't hurt.

We also killed a 2024 Heaven Hill Grain to Glass and cracked open a 2025 Grain to Glass.
Same mash bill but a different variety of Beck's corn. Two couldn't be more different in flavor. The 2024 had so many warming spices. Felt like it would be the perfect Christmas yuletide lig fire sip. The 2025 is very corn forward and more one note, but it's a helluva note.

Finally, we tried the mash up of Old Forrester 1910 and 1920. We took a sip of each individually. Instead of a 50/50 mixture make a "1915", we mixed it more heavy on the 1910 for a 1912.5 or 1913.3.
Fun to play arounf with but we agreed the 1910 by itself is still the way to go.

Welp, had today off and while running errands went window shopping at a few liquor stores.

Ended up getting a few bottles.

Four Roses Small Batch Select. Prices had been getting out of hand on this bit a store had it for $50 which is a fair price. I've had this before and have always enjoyed it.

1792 Bottled in Bond. I'm totally "meh" on 1792 Small Batch. I don't buy it, I'll never order it, but if a friend offers it up, I'll enjoy it. It'll be a month or two before I crack this one, but I'm excited to try it. It was $51.

And then for Mrs. Diesel. She is a big fan of the Four Roses "OExx" single barrels. Found a bottle of OESK at one store. It was $49. Found OESO at another store for $47. That price sounds about right.

While at the register of the last store, I was scoping out their selections behind the counter and saw a couple of Booker's bottles. I had the girl tell me the numbers and one of them was 2025-01 Barry's Batch, which is also a favorite of Mrs Diesel. It was way over priced at $160........but with Mother's Day coming up and the release a year old, it won't be getting any easier to find Barry's batch.

So, a morning errand trip to the bank to pick up crisp bills for college graduation cards, a stop at tailor to pick up a suit jacket that needed some work, and five bottles of bourbon.

Man, I am sure glad I don't have to share my Bourbon with the Mrs. Nice haul.

I agree on Small Batch Select, it used be reliably $48 and was good at that price. Lately it's north of $60 and that's too much. Agree on regular 1792. I found a store pick of Full Proof 1792 for $50 recently and did pick that up.

Mine likes to sample but not have a full pour. Only a couple of times has she not given me back my glass, most recently it was a Bomberger's PFG, so I really cant blame her for wanting to keep drinking that one.

Those releases are some of the best bang for buck in bourbon in most cases.
I'm getting all the Four Roses SiB recipes for $42.99 locally. Incredible deal really. I may have to go back to my old SiB store pick reviews to remember which recipes I liked best. I don't really remember.

Around me I believe they are what Chin is paying, at least in SC, we dont get them in NC too often.

How much New Riff is around up that way? Any store picks showing up? Those folks are KILLING it lately, just great bourbons and ryes.

It's really one store that has it cheaper. The rest around $48. Lots of New Riff up here. I like a lot of what I've had but the core offerings are bit overpriced compared to say, Green River. The Malted Rye was excellent. The SiBs are often very good.

The easiest way to remember is two mash bills and five yeast strains.

OE= Easy. Higher corn mash
OB= Bold. Higher rye mash

And then the B, F, K, O, S for the five yeast strains.

The OE will always be a bit sweeter and more smooth. The OB will have a bit of bite.

Fortunately Mrs Diesel mostly lives in high corn amd lower ABV. We are most likely to share the Woodford Double Oak.

She taps out on most of the barrel strength or cask strength. The Barry's Batch being a rare exception, but she puts a big rock of ice when she drinks it.

Rainy night here on Panhandle of Florida and I'm keeping it easy. A couple of fingers of Jim Beam Double Oak.

$25 for a bottle and it can be drank neat. Nothing spectacular but a good way to kill a dud of a night.
