Borges: UConn potentially looking at hosting low-major MTE?

Still need two more P4 H/H series this year (both on the road so we get them at home in 26/27). They don't need to be killers either. I'm fine with something like Wisconsin and Maryland.

Not sure that’s true vs a complete coincidence but I’ll let you have it

For those that remember, our first choice was actually Nick McKarchuck
In the papers at the time it was reported that they had three finalists: Macarchuk, Mitch Buonaguro and JC. I never heard they wanted Nick.

Who was the guy from Torrington CT who was a scout for the Milwaukee Bucks and had been a coach elsewhere? There was interest in him as well….,maybe Bob something?

I remember thinking we blew it when we "lost" Buonaguro to Fairfield his first year there.

It was also JC's first year at UConn and he had a losing record while Buonaguro had a solid winning season..........turned out to be his only winning season though!

However it happened, John Toner made his second great hire in a row with JC. Geno the year before turned out pretty well too!

Need to consider BC too.

BCU is below mid-major level.

Type of program you schedule for a preseason exhibition when Marathon Oil isn't available.

There's your 5 power games. Now time to add Central, Southern, Eastern, New Haven, Fairfield, and Northwest Tennessee State Tech and the like and call it a year.

Seems like they tried to get a road game and then Illinois just wanted an MSG game?

I remember hearing quite a few who sat near me at the Civic center complaining that we didn't hire Penders. This was after we won the NIT, Penders took URI to the sweet 16 in 1988 and a lot of people (who believed a UConn grad should get special consideration) felt Penders was the better option, even with our NIT win.

I didn't understand it then but those people fell into the category of those who didn't believe we could ever win as a BE school and thinking that we could one day compete with schools who were trying to win championships was foolish.

I don’t remember that, but I do know that those were the final three.
