No, he's ready. He has all the talent in the world and what he does with it at the next level is up to him. Bouk is a late lottery pick right now, worst case, first round pick. It would be absurdly stupid for him to return to college - the NBA would mark him as damaged goods. Average number of upperclassmen taken in the top 14/lottery the past 3 decades:

1990s: 10.6
2000s: 5.8
2010s: 2.6

There have been 10 upperclassmen selected in the lottery in the draft since our last championship. The NBA has clearly shifted away from prioritizing upperclass prospects. Bouk will get better training, coaching, meal prep, mentorship - everything - at the NBA level. It would be a 6 figure mistake for Bouk. Now is the time for him to move on.

My heart wishes James well, my brain says it’s not what’s best for him long term.
You never regret spending a little more time on building a solid foundation. That’s always true but in this case it’s particularly true.

He’s a projected lottery pick. His draft stock can’t improve much more and it makes him at least a year older when he’s going for his second contract.
 
I do feel like James could benefit from another year in college. Going to the NBA provides great training and experience, but there is a key element missing. In college, great players dominate and build tremendous confidence. At the pro level, players that aren’t ready yet tend to get humbled and their confidence can take a hit. Other players don’t respect their game and they struggle to shake the “overrated” tag.

For a guy like James, another year of physical growth and a college season in which he is one of the very best players in the country could be a great springboard heading into the league. James strikes me as way too fragile and his handle is very loose. I don’t think he is quite ready for what lies ahead. Unfortunately, it no longer seems to make sense as a business decision to stay in school.
 
Almost every sophomore would benefit from another year of college. That said, if you are a projected lottery pick and get assurances you will go in to the top 14, you make that jump as fast as you can. James has more to lose($) by coming back than to gain. The reasons for James to come back for another year serves us well and UConn well, but not him. Maturity comes with age and he will have to grow up quick. Strength comes with work, and give me a NBA training staff over almost anyone. Bouk is fine. When the dust settles, even after the somewhat deflating end to his season, GMS will fall in love with his upside. Prediction: Top 10 pick.

Only the first 2 years are guaranteed. Teams have to opt in for years 3 and 4. That said he'll be a top 12 pick and make at least $40m in his NBA career

All I will respond is that I think it’s important that James has a firm foundation leaving college. That would be his best investment long term. More important than draft slot or 3 year money. I was one who advocated for James in Sept of 2019, when some here didn’t. I have his best interest at heart.

How can you say you have his best interest at heart when you're telling him not to take money that will provide for his family for generations?
 
Some of these one and done kids could improve with another year of college ball....but when the NBA is throwing money at kids while knowing they will need further development...why turn it down?

Bouk is like Scottie Barnes....talent...but still needing development.

And both will take the money.
 
He is going to develop and get the best training in the world from NBA coaches and trainers. Also, he will get some great money. Why would he turn that down?

Good luck James. We will remember you for being the recruit that helped shift the culture here. No matter what happened in recent weeks, I appreciate you immensely because without you we wouldn't have even made it to the big dance.

Never questioned your character. Came back from elbow surgery that could've affected his stock, despite some saying that you were only focused on the draft.

I said he would be a stud player in Sept 2019 and I am saying my position has his best interest at heart in March 2021. I really believe the situation should be viewed as a long term investment by James not a draft slot or expected 3 year dollar value. Long term investments are built on a solid foundation. There is more work to do on that in various areas, but if the sound foundation is built, the sky is the limit. I think that sound foundation can best be built at UConn.

I recognize I am swimming upstream, as I did then (Sept 2019), when I had his back. Just go back and read some of those mean posts after the incident. I also realize that barring a miracle, he’s going to The League. Because he’s very likely leaving, I hope I am wrong and wish him the best. But, I think it’s very much in his long term interest to stay another season.

It’s ok to be completed wrong on this, and you are. It’s unequivocally NOT in his best interest to stay. He’s not going to get any of the foundation you speak of in college, in terms of basketball.
It’s up to his family and advisers to assist him with any maturity issues, off the court.
