Right now JC is in the infamous "damned if you do, damned if you dont" situation. If JC were to announce today that he was retiring there would be hundreds of articles written how he quit on the program when it needed him the most. If he announces today that hes staying, there will be hundreds of articles written about how he should have retired because the uncertain future is hurting the program. Thats why for Calhoun's legacy i kind of wish he just walked away after the championship last year.
I think the thing to do would be make very discreet inquiries to find out what level of exciting young coach may be interested. If it was an elite candidate, I would ask Jim to step aside for his health and remain involved as a foundation kind of guy who raises money for the school and for cancer research. I realize he's had a challenging relationship with some CT press, but he could mellow in semi-retirement and maybe soften up his image a bit.
