OT: Boneyard Annual Halloween Treat Thread

This is what happens when I let Mrs Diesel buy Halloween treats. I may egg my own house on Friday.

When we did our 9 year stint in Meriden, we must have had 150+ kids/year. We were pretty consistent giving out Mounds or Snickers bars.

Now we are in the woods somewhere and have not had a kid in 12 years.

As a kid, I loved getting Mounds and Almond Joys.

Dont be the person who:
leaves the basket of candy outside with a "take one" sign, turns off the lights and watches TV in their room. Stop being scared of humans. The pandemic is over.
I thought about doing this but not because I want to avoid people. There’s a good band performing at a Halloween street party which starts at 7.

Instead, I’ll hand out Reese, Kit Kat and Hershey bars until the kids stop coming. That should be no later than 8. Then I’ll go to the party.

I have two giant cauldrons of candy. One with fruity candy and one chocolate minis, plus full size bars. Live in a fairly quiet neighborhood with lots of kids of all ages and they’re generally pretty respectful when I’m not there yet. I take my own kids out early and then come back and sit with a cooler and listen to tunes.

I’m a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups guy myself.

This was actually the first year I was considering it. It's gonna be low 40s, windy, with high humidity/possibility of rain. I usually set up a table at end of driveway and sit out there because kids cut through the yard, knock over the walkway lights, and I don't want them upsetting the dog. My doorbell broke and while I have a Ring to install, it's not happening in next 48 hours. So I wanted to just throw all the candy out there at once and see what happens.

This year it's full size Skittles, Starbursts, and chocolate covered granola bars. We usually get 45-60 kids. The next door neighbor to my left always goes to the local social club for drinks. That sounds like an idea.

My kids aged out of trick or treating. I miss pilfering their candy for B-sides like Clark bars, York peppermint Patties and paydays.
If you need a rec, air-heads slap. Kids skip the traditional chocolates and go right to them. Nerds are popular as well.

Necco Wafers, Mary Janes and Bit'o'Honey is our go to. For some reason we get less kids every year when everyone else gets more. Not sure why?

In reality, we get less kids than we used to because neighborhoods in my town are cyclical. We're now the street with high school and college aged kids. I usually get a couple mixed packs of Reese's type stuff and a couple non-chocolate, non-peanut for the allergy kids. I start off giving two bags and work my way up as I see we aren't going to run out.

It's the Necco Wafers

I lived in NYC for about a year when I was a kid. When you live in a building with 100+ apartments, you have to pace yourself.

My father insisted we check in every 1/2 hour. It took about five minutes for me to sort out what I like from my pillow case. The rest he tossed in a bowl he used to hand out candy to those who knocked at our door.

I was fairly certain most families were doing the same thing, and at the end of the day we all ended up with whatever our parents bought to handout in the first place.

Reese’s
Almond Joy
Hershey Special Dark
MMs peanuts

Loved the house on Williams St on Meridens east side that had a haunting walkway to the basement in back (you wouldn’t do that anymore) and served you warm apple cider and gave out big candy bars as well. Would have 10-12 kids in there talking about school, sports we were playing in etc a wonderful family.

As a kid in the late 70's.....

The best: Baseball cards, full size candy bars, the wax soda bottles with the syrup in them.
The worst: Raisins, religious pamphlets....and one dentist used to give out toothbrushes with his name and number on them!

What did you buy to hand out?

What're your favorite candies or treats?

I was absolutely dumbfounded to see our bucket of treats filled up with cheez ballz packets. There's like three cheez ballz in each packet and I have a bucket of like 100 of them. I have no idea what Mrs. Diesel was thinking buying them, but I am certain no matter how right I am in critiquing and ridiculing her choice, that conversation will not end up to my benefit. Only good thing is the wrapper looks pretty normal so a kid just reaching in to the bucket at night won't know their disappointment right away.

Mod Note: Please don't say where you live.
Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookies.

My guess is the dentist handed out the baseball cards. He could fix every tooth broken by that rock hard gum.

Hey CC hope all is well. How is Meriden these years for Halloween? It was the best in the 60s70s!! Be good pal
I think there are less kids going out. We get about 60 to 70. A lot of Trunk or Treat events in and around town.
Not like when we were kids and we had to go dump out our pillow case for round two.
Hope all is well with you.
Looking forward to the season and hopefully making a run at #7.
