It's clear the football schools are holding the NCAA hostage NOT because football is that much more popular, but because they can.

It's the power dynamic.

They've not only forced the NCAA into funding itself exclusively with basketball tournament revenue, but they are taking the money from the men's and women's tournament and using it to pay top football players demanding NIL money from the distant past.

If basketball didn't have to pay the bills for ALL NCAA sports, it would be worth a heckuva lot more.
the non p4 schools are a majority...why don't they vote to stop funding the ncaa with bball money?

That might lead to the big football schools splitting sooner rather than later.

If the big football schools do that, they'll be on the hook for the entire amount of the lawsuit.

But the ship has sailed, Charlie Baker went with the football schools.

There has never been a better moment for leverage for the non-P4 schools in the entire existence of the NCAA, and they completely folded.

Do they hope they will still be part of it all in 10 years when the payouts cease?

And with 8 people watching the NCAA tournament without Duke Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Baylor, et al it would be worth less than the a DePaul Georgetown game in March so funding the NCAA wouldn’t be an issue.

How would they fund the NCAA? There's no other money that the NCAA controls.

If the P4 think running championships in other sports is worthwhile, they can use football revenues to pay for it.

This is all easy to do. CFP makes a certain amount per year, so does the NCAAT. Take whatever % of each that is needed.

They absolutely could and those championships would absolutely be viewed as the true National Championships. They would get the coverage and media hype and money. UNC-Michigan will always out Draw UConn-San Diego State. And that is the fundamental problem the no -P4 leagues have. They might have the votes but they don’t have the leverage to use them.

It's telling how we are crossing our fingers for a bit over 8 mil when a program like BC is getting 30 mil+, Vandy 50 mil +, Northwestern and Rutgers 50 Mil +, Cinci 35 mil + etc etc etc.
We all know football drives the big money. We have 2 ways to go to have our athletic program be solvent, join a P4 or drop football.

I don't think the tournament you have in mind makes that money. People would not have the same level of interest, especially as the Big 2 conferences would demand that 3/4 of each conference made the tournament. And it would be right after their conference tournaments?

You can see how unappealing this all is.

Not sure why this needs to be said, but it evidently does. March Madness will not be the same if only 4 major conferences are involved.

Are we watching? Not me, and not half the country, maybe more. Then we'll have competing touraments, with two national champions. Yes Big East teams have 5 titles in 10 years, more than any other conference. With half of those power conferences being shut out

How many teams participate in that tournament? 32? Eight from each? LMAO

Just not happening people

Now, back to the thread title. The Big East is GETTING MORE MONEY, and will continue to get more money every cycle

That's a good thing

You may want to take a look at the athletic balance sheet if you believe that dropping football would make us "solvent". (I think what you're trying to say Is that dropping football would cause us to operate breakeven or a surplus. That's not correct either.)

Yes, you stated that correctly. Basketball generated $10.6M in 2023 revenue while football lost $13M. This is the trend I was trying to point out. Our football program does not sustain itself and adds to the deficit year after year. It’s not a sound strategy.
