Big 12 season thread ('24-'25)

OSU locked up a top 4 seed in the conference tourney according to announcers.

Colorado got Wetta and Garzon back just in time. They'll be favored in Lubbock, by my guess. They hold the tiebreaker over Arizona. The 8-seed is actually critical because it gets a bye.

Masogayo is the schooling 6'7 Sun Devil Bascom.

As the half winds down the Buffalo announcers are speculating on what the rebuilding coach from Tempe might say to her troops. With 45 seconds left in the half a Buff goes down and the Devils come down five on four and of course turn the ball over.

Thinking about awful teams anyone watching this game would say that the Sun Devils very well could be not only the worst team in the Big 12 not only the worst team in the West not only the worst team in the USA not only the worst team in the world but perhaps dare I say it the worst team in the universe.

While statistics don't really capture the putrid nature of the performance by the nice coach from Delaware it's worth looking at the rebounding numbers as the Devils show a complete lack of interest in this critical aspect of basketball. At the half they're being out rebounded 27 to 13 they have zero offensive rebounds, of course as that's not within their wheelhouse, but they have given up nine offensive boards to the Buffaloes.

In scoring one point a minute in the first half the Sun Devils have more turnovers and fouls (9) than made shots (7). But this doesn't really capture the sheer ineptitude of this team. It's startling and reminds me of the very first game my 5-year-old daughter played on the soccer pitch with most of the girls running around in the wrong direction.

Not sure it matters as I think the kitties from the dirty t and the Buffaloes are going to finish eight and nine or nine and eight so they'll meet in the second round. Whoever finishes 9th will destroy Houston on their way to playing the other team.

Houston and their 1-16 conference record would like a word with you.

The problem is the number of games. Whoever ends up the 9-seed, assuming they beat Houston, is in a really tough spot even if they beat the 8-seed. It'll be their third game in three days against the 1-seed

Yep, but remember it's Houston. And whoever wins that eight - nine game is going to get beat up really bad in the quarters

And..... In Boulder the Sun Devils open up the second half giving up a 3 to the Buffalo's which is understandable giving their contempt for defending the three line. Then they come down and of course turn the ball over.

The agony.

Basketball is fun and life is good when you're playing the Sun Devils at home. The nice coach from Delaware calls time out to continue to build on the rebuild 48-20.

Following the Sun Devil time out they come down turn the ball over on a breakaway and the Buffaloes are now up by 30.

Natasha Adair 3 years in Tempe 3 20 loss seasons. I do believe she must have a day of barnes's agent as the 2.1 million by out insurers that she will finish next year.... How many coaches can say they 20 games for four consecutive seasons at the same school.

The Houston the cats barely beat in OT via bogus block call? Houston is bad, but still is competitive in a lot of these games. Playing games back to back is tiring, even if one of the games is a blowout

Ikr..... Buffalo or the kitties from the dirty t stand very little chance in the quarters for those reasons. Regardless of who tips off give the points.

They say defense travels so if the kitties beat the Buffaloes those Bear down gals can travel back to the dirty t. If Frida Foreman is back and the Buffalo squeaks by the kitties then they can squeak back to Boulder after their quarter loss.

In no world do the Cougars beat either the kitties or the Buffs. As they say everything's great in Kansas City

And yes the Sun Devils did go into Houston and beat the Cougs. And perhaps it's because I have so much toxic exposure to the Sun Devils I can really appreciate how they plumbed the depth of incompetence, ineptitude, and indifference.

As a previous poster pointed out the Cougs came very close to beating the kitties. And even though they have an extraordinarily short bench there's always effort by Houston and at times they seem to know what they're doing. They're just outmanned.

The Sun Devils are both out manned but more importantly they rarely seem to know what they're doing or care.

Currently they are within 40 points in Boulder as the fourth quarter begins. I'm watching the Buffaloes both on the court and on the bench huge smiles, laughter, and you can tell they're really having a great time.

I think Coach Amber Whiting is on the phone trying to call you, wondering how her bunch got outscored 14-2 in OT by this incompetent squad from Tempe.

I get your frustration, but they win just enough games to not be in the conversation for worst of all time. I'll never forget that Washington lost to them twice last season.

Whatever other shortcomings ASU has, they do possess 2 players in Brown and Skinner who can make the ball go thru the hoop. I suffered 3 years of the Wynn era at Washington w/ only 1 player who could do that, Melgoza.

Okay, here's something crazy--ASU is only being outscored 76-70 on average. A -6 is minuscule, I'm sure there are many teams being outscored by 15-20 on average.

What?! Colorado players are handing out donuts to the crowd at the conclusion of the game. Nice.

Shame Formann wasn't able to play on Senior Night. She did sub in at the end and then was immediately subbed out again.

In a previous diatribe I posted that from 1999 to 2022 the Sun Devils allowed their opponents on average to score 70 points once. During most of the CTT era she held opponents under 60 per game.

In her 3 years in Tempe Adair teams have always allowed more than 70 points per game to their opponents. In this her third year the Sun Devils have been out scored on average in all three years.

Comparing where the program has fallen to now to the previous 20 years is extraordinarily painful and admittedly warps my perspective. I suspect my perspective is as warped as the process that brought the nice coach to Tempe and allows her to continue.

In Boulder tonight the full range of incompetence in both coaching, preparation, execution, and play was on display to the huge ESPN plus TV audience of which I was a part.

And no way is the ASU women's basketball program as currently lead and constructed a power 4 program. Each year the team has gotten worse. I'm not certain there's much soilace in saying hey there's a five six kid who can score the ball and there's a player named Ice who leads Big 12 in turnovers ... cuz hey she's seventh in the conference in scoring.

What's even more soul crushing is the knowledge that this will be the case next year as Adair is going to finish her contract due to the buyout. I do wonder how many NCAA women's basketball coaches have had four consecutive 20 loss seasons at the same school. That in itself is something......

I totally agree with you, Adair is clearly in over her head. She should be relieved of her coaching duties. Will she get another year? I don't know.

While the circumstances aren't exactly the same, to me it is similar to Wynn at UW. Some fans wanted her to be given a 5th season after signing a decent recruiting class. She was let go after year 4. By that point it was painfully obvious she wasn't going to get it done at the Pac 12 level. Pretty big jump from the Big West, where she was really only moderately successful to be honest.

Anyone got thoughts on who will be player of the year in the Big 12?

It will not be the preseason pick of Ayoka Lee. Thing is nobody on the top teams has really had a crazy standout year that just stands head and shoulders over the others. Audi Crooks is leading the league in scoring and has some name recognition but not sure a player from a 12-6 or 11-7 bubble team will get POY. Littlepage-Buggs is averaging a double-double but people are more enamored with high scoring players and she is out now for crunch time. Prince has some good overall stats but completely disappears in some games and has a lot of off-court baggage that I bet eliminates her. Might be pig-tails Van Lith for TCU by default if TCU can beat Baylor on Sunday.

Player of the week has been all over the place. Freshman of the year is BYU's Delany Gibb and that should be unanimous, nobody else is even close.

Kneepkins got POW this last week, here are the others.

Bizarro day in the Big 12. Texas Tech beat Colorado and BYU has taken Utah to OT...in SLC.

edit--Gibb going off w/ 32 and counting

Utah dodged a bullet, 76-73 final. Gibb w/ 36 points on 13-18 shooting, 5-7 behind the arc, also 10 rebounds and 5 assists. That has to be one of the best individual performances by a Fr. all season.

Gibb has been fantastic this year. Can't believe she's only a freshman.

Wilke nailed one from half-court to win btw...

I shoulda turned the TV on! Wow BYU thought they were headed to 2 OT and then bang!

Sorry @azfan , but Houston beyond a shadow of a doubt is the worst team in the Big 12, ASU has no claim on that title. Getting blown out at home by UCF at the moment. Will finish 1-17, 2 games behind anyone else.
