Big 12 season thread ('24-'25)

Quite the bounceback season for TCU, from forfeiting games to winning the conference in the span of one season.

Still, not sure Baylor loses that game if Littlepage-Buggs was able o play.

Sigh..... You're correct. So ASU only rises or sinks to the level of mediocre awfulness. They can't excel at anything.

And the Cougars will get destroyed by the kitties in the first round. So even when the Sun Devils lose their first round game in a distressingly predictable manner you're still absolutely correct they're awfulness is only mediocre.
So far as I know, Arizona is locked in the 8 seed and will get a first day bye. Colorado gets the Cougars.

Yep..... thanks to the Buffalo lost to Texas Tech. The kitties and Buffaloes were always destined to play in the second round however as they were going to finish 8,9 regardless.

That game will be a huge one for Coach Barnes and the kitties. A victory gets the kitties to 20 wins and the opportunity to get pounded in the quarterfinals.

I know the kitties are clinging to a hope to be one of the play in teams but frankly I'm not sure how they move up even with a win over the buffaloes to sneak into the quarters..

But this is what early March is all about Hope springs eternal.

And in more important Arizona news the Lopes finish at home Saturday in an effort to keep the NCAA women's winning streak alive. The best team playing women's basketball in Arizona appears to be the Lopes destined for a 30 win season and the opportunity to dance.

Here in Flagstaff the second best team in Arizona has an outside, remote shot at the co championship in the Big sky as they trail the Bobcats by one game. Realistically I see the Jacks losing to Montana State in the tournament final up in Boise.

Natasha Adair caps her third consecutive 20 loss season with a loss to Cincinnati.

And that leaves kitty fans on the edge of their smoked wondering.....

Baylor struggled soooo much in Q4 life cold shooting.

Hailey Van Lith fits in well at TCU. However, I have many issues with Prince and the way the school has handled it. Just can’t root for that team.
Partially due to TCU defense

The POY race is interesting. If you look historically it comes from a top-3 team.

TCU - They have 3 candidates Prince, Van Lith, and Connor. I'd say it's Prince, her rim protection/deterrence has been so valuable. And her playmaking on offense as a big is really impressive. Not sure who's been better between Van Lith/Connor. Both have been very good.

Baylor - Our best player this year has been Littlepage-Buggs. We've played well in her absence too though. The team is balanced so it's hard to point to a single player. Maybe Buggs would have had some chance to win if we won last night.

Oklahoma State - Seems like the only candidate is Stailee Heard?

To me the obvious pick is Prince. Not sure that will happen due to off-court stuff.

Any Baylor peeps here? What's the buzz on Littlepage-Buggs knee injury and recovery for March?

In other Big 12 injury stuff I am not buying the Ayoka Lee coming back to play yet this year. I think it's PR stuff to try and influence seeding for March Madness.

New polls have WVU at #16 and Baylor at #17. Think Baylor is getting screwed. WVU is a home court centric team and I think Baylor is just better, especially if they can get Littlepage-Buggs back. Mountain Momma's are 7-6 away from home, Bears are 10-4 away from Waco. WVU is 4-6 vs Quad1/2 and Baylor is 8-6. WVU's NET seems built on slaughtering Quad 3 and 4's.

I don't share injury info about my team :)

I agree Kansas State would be silly not to try some injury gamesmanship.

West Virginia's results are really interesting to look at actually. None of their wins is by fewer than 13 points. I'm not sure how much they empty their bench in blowouts. We always try to. Massey likes WV less than NET, likely b/c it values blowouts less.

I suspect that a number of people will be relieved by the POY choice (a good choice, IMO).

Closer than some anticipated but Colorado beat Houston 66-58.

In the opener UCF beat BYU 81-69. Amber Whiting is in over her head, right? Can everybody else see that? Jump from high school to college is a leap that just shouldn't be made for coaches.

Arizona St. nearly blew a 19 point 4th quarter lead but held on against Cincinnati.

.-.
Breya Cunningham was such a highly-recruited post player out of California a few years ago. Honorable Mention is not the level I predicted for her at Arizona.

Now that's how you throw a party. I think every lower seeded team won today. Oops, 3 out of 4. Would've been a huge upset if Houston beat Colorado.

She has a foul problem. Not "physical" fouls. Just tries to block every shot, including times when it is impossible. And reaches in on plays when she isn't under the basket.

Her touch on scoring is unbelievable. No matter how awkward the shot looks, it usually goes in, a lot of jump hooks. But it is hard to score when you are sitting on the bench due to foul trouble.

If she played more, she would have been on one of the teams, she is probably one of the most talented players on Arizona. The others are inconsistent, Jada Williams if she was less streaky and slightly more of a scorer (and if Arizona had been better over-all) probably would have been somewhere on the list. In the future, Swann that made the freshman team is an all conference prospect - she is that talented but needs to make the freshman-sophomore leap and expand her skill set.

Kansas St. beat UCF 80-65 in the first game of the day.

Kitties are in a cat fight with the Buffaloes in Kansas City. All freshman Big 12 Swann commits a freshman play at the end of the first half to allow the Buffs to tie it up.

This is the pace that coach Barnes would like to play and I know she's got fingers crossed that Cunningham can stay on the floor.

Yep! 4 minutes into the second half against the Buffs she picks up her third foul and heads to the bench. Really curious coach Barnes is able to find a fabulous outfit and matching shoes but unable to assist her post figure it out on the defensive end

The 1.2 million dollar coach just call timeout maybe to provide some quick in game instruction on how to avoid fouls.

Maybe there wasn't successful defensive teaching but all freshmen Big 12 Swann comes out of the time out and lights up two quick threes and maybe the kitties are on to the quarters.

Down goes Arizona. 61-58 Colorado nudges them.
Bear

Barnes' crew couldn't hold on to the double digit lead in the second half in spite of having the rest. The Buffs beat the kitties earlier in the year so I had a suspicion that this was going to be the end of the road for that team from the dirty t although coach Barnes may be able to take her squad to the WNIT

Arizona St. managing to not get blown out, but Iowa St. is in control down the stretch. Crooks is on the verge of a 40 piece.

Wait, I swear I saw Crooks w/ 39 points, but now I see Brown w/ 41 and Crooks has 20. Well SOMEBODY from Iowa St. had a big game today!

Sorry, I don't like this floor. About a million XII symbols plastered all over it. It's about as distracting as TCU's home court.

Big 12 is definitely the zaniest of the conference tourneys so far. Right now Utah is looking like they've never played basketball before and trailing Texas Tech by double digits.

I like it personally but to each their own. Trying to figure out why the BIG10 opted for a checkered pattern for the key right now. A tip of the cap to being in Indianapolis and the Indy 500?

Sort of hate it but after a bit at least I stopped noticing it.

Texas Tech wins 75-64. Who was that team wearing Utah's uniforms? Didn't recognize them.

Not sure if Oklahoma St. is happy about this or not. Theoretically an easier opponent, but those are the games that have given them trouble all season. Of course TT might be tired with their 3rd game in 3 days.

After LIGHTING up Natasha Adair's rebuilding ASU squad for 96 - the Cyclones are finding tough going against a real power 4 team as Baylor has limited Iowa State to a deuce though the first 5 minutes of the game. Unlike the Sun Devils resolute refusal to defend, particularly the three, the Bears embrace all that is real defense.
