Big 10 basketball 2022, Part II

With Maryland out this tourney is up for grabs by anyone IMO. Even though they've had a down year, everyone knew they were still top dog.
Yup. Even in a down season, everyone did think that Maryland was top dog. Then it was Indiana for a while. Michigan was in the conversation after Indiana stumbled. Now, Iowa hung around and might get the crown. But yeah, Maryland was still considered top dog in the conference.

To the poster who keeps saying Indiana is overrated: they've now beaten Maryland and Ohio State on tired legs with a still-recovering-from-injury version of McKenzie Holmes, no Kiandra Browne, and a version of Aleksa Gulbe so sick that she didn't even come out of the locker room until midway through the 2Q today. That's their entire front court depth except for Arielle Wisne, a third stringer who is now seeing meaningful minutes for the first time in her career.

Indiana is two steady reserve players away from being a national championship contender. They’re tough, gritty, smart, and play exceptionally well together. Just have zero depth and very little margin of error because of it.

Indiana has been getting the better end of the officiating.

Maryland 22 fouls - Indiana 12 fouls. (especially with how physical Indiana was with Angel Reese)

Ohio State 20 fouls - Indiana 9 fouls. Free throws in favor of Indiana 23-4.

Sort of one sided.

Or it could be that Indiana plays good defense and Maryland and Ohio State don't. They are a disciplined, experienced team and know they can't afford to get in foul trouble given their limited depth. If you look at their box scores, they have committed less fouls than their opponents in about 85% of games this year. It must be a big conspiracy that the refs keeping favoring Indiana.

Nothing about conspiracy but the fouls were a little one sided. Especially in the Ohio State game. Let's see what happens in the Iowa game.

Mayb well coached team taught not to foul not always refs fault

Hmm. I watched some of the game today. Indiana gets away with A LOT. They lean on drivers constantly and also reach in/hack a lot. Maybe it is the refs and not the way they play. And then they pick up some ridiculous calls in their favor on flops. They are kind of an irritating team.

Iowa got away with a lot, too. There were a lot of really rough plays allowed and a few phantom fouls both ways. I always hope for better officiating in the postseason and am often disappointed. It seems worse this year than usual.

This was a really enjoyable game to watch. Indiana just ran out of gas. And Holmes doesn’t have the leg strength back yet to keep Czinano off the block. Czinano has said she’s coming back next year, so we have some more good battles between them to look forward to.

Can we just give some props to Monika Czinano. She's understandably a bit in the shadow of Clark's wizardry, but on a day when Clark was a relative mortal, Czinano had an insane stat line of 30 points on 13-18 FG to go with 10 rebounds. Compensating for Iowa's frigid 3-point shooting (2 of 14).

It's sad to see Mackenzie Holmes nowhere near the level she was at before her injury. She was on track to be an All-American, but she's just not there right now.

It's the way Czinano has developed over her career that gets me -- from the bumbling freshman playing 5 min/game solely so Gustafson could catch her breath, to the dominant senior capable of carrying her team when nothing else is falling. She's what college ball is all about for me.

I agree. Both teams seem to get calls you wouldn't expect to go in their favour. However, it doesn't take away from a very entertaining BIG10 tournament. Based on what I've seen over the weekend, the actual tourney is going to be very competitive which is excellent for the game.

And this point gets lost with all the transfers and complaints about playing time. It takes time to transition to the NCAA for some. Coaches still recruit based off of potential and if you put in the work, you get the results.

Iowa seem to develop their players very well.
Jan Jensen, Assoc. HC is one if not the best at developing post players at the collegiate level. Nobody, not even HC Bluder thought Monika Czinano would be anywhere near as good as she is.

Totally agree. And Monika continues to improve her game: last year FT% was 68.0, this year it's 83.8. That's significant for someone who goes to the line as much as she does. Last year you could see Sharon Goodman grow as her backup as the season unfolded. Sharon missed this year due to a knee injury but freshman Addison O'Grady has shown the same improvement in play and confidence as well. Kudos to Coach Jensen!
