OT: Best Pizza in CT

If I want Sally's, I'll drive to New Haven and go to Pepe.
I've done that a number of times as well.

Since Covid I've been to Sally's twice. I've been to Wooster St Pepe's at least a dozen times.

I don't know if this was mentioned in this thread, but I was driving by the UConn Medical Center this week and saw this license plate. I didn't know there was such a thing, but I love it.

Last 2x at Pepe's for me was like the old days, wonderful pizza. Very well made. August and October. And I went there after several subpar tries before that. They are inconsistent.

And so, I tried for 3 in a row last week. All the pizza making staff appeared to be in their 20s. I got thick dough, tasteless sauce, and a lot of cheese on top.

Pepe’s can be the very best of the best except when it’s overrated.

A little surprised this hasn't been mentioned here. Happened on Thanksgiving. Thank God this wasn't worse...I freakin' absolutely love this place. Just wondering the motive. People suck.

I've never gotten a bad Pepe's. Even in Mohegan Sun arena.

I’ve bought numerous pies at Mohegan and Manchester and was never disappointed. One time Manchester gave me two clam pies since they tore the crust on the first. It did not affect the quality.

I now go to Delray Beach and enjoy their clam pies as well. They added a bar to that location eight months ago. I sat there when I went to the FAU game a few weeks ago. That was a great trip, Pepe’s, Elbo Room and Southport Raw Bar. South Florida trifecta.

My New Haven seven sisters rankings:

1. Zeneli
2. Zuppardi's
3. Bar
4. Pepe's
5. Sally's
6. Modern
7. Ernie's (have not tried yet- could change)

Sally's and Modern have fallen way off from the first time I tried them over a dozen years ago.

Just curious, how often have you had these in New Haven?

I live in Buffalo and I travel down to New Haven often and I always stop in at both unless I must have a Zuppardi's fresh clam pizza.

I can easily see someone going to both on any given day and rating Pepe's well ahead of Sally's.

But if you go there regularly, the rating of both should be reversed. Pepe's is the more inconsistent of the two, though Sally's is inconsistent as well.

My family thinks I'm crazy because sometimes I walk in just to see if I can recognize some of the older crew making pizza. If I see only 20-somethings making it, I turn around and go to the other. If I see the long time pizza guy at Sally's in the back, I will always choose that #1 even if Pepe has their best people there.

My brother who lives in Jupiter goes to Pepe's there often. He thinks it's much better than some of the other Apizza establishments in that area (Fantini's, Lake Worth, Floza, Ah-Beetz, etc.).

Sallys impossible to order (5 hr wait for take-out?), Pepe has been spotty, but modern always comes-thru!

If we're bringing it full circle... The first time I had Pepe's, in the summer years back, it was absolutely delicious. It's never been that good since, and along with Sally's, is annoying to order or eat at. Modern has always been consistently good and is "20 minutes" for pickup every time.

That being said, I had John's of Bleeker a few months back, and I was blown away by how good it was. Best bite of pizza and maybe food I've ever had. I clutched those leftovers like it was my child on the subway.

I find modern is almost impossible to get thru to unless you call early in the day. You can order Sally’s or Pepe’s online but here again especially Sally’s order early for later pick up.

You order it on your phone, you can use an app, you don't have to wait in line. THey only make a limited amount of pizzas to go. It's not first come first serve. That's only for the sitting customers.

They make the togo pizzas in batches.

Will probably open b4 the Norwalk Sally's that's going on 5 years since it was announced. Can't imagine the A& S in the same strip is too happy, or their compete clause had some holes in it.
