Dang. Shame. Their apizza, the one time I got it, was very good. But when I picked it up, it was striking how run down the place was. Kind of shocking to learn they were only open 6 years. Looked like a place that had been open since 1995. Hope they can find footing elsewhere
That footprint used to be the old Vic’s Pizza before it morphed into JRoos and moved to State & Dixwell.

Dixwell Ave

Could never drive on that without appreciating the underlying schoolhouse humor of the street name

Fresh summer tomato pie has officially dropped at Pepe’s. I wait all year for this sauceless pie, which I adore at the Wooster Street location. Doesn’t have the garlic flavor of the New Haven version, but this pie from the Stamford Pepe’s tonight was delicious.

-> Gotham’s biggest cheese, according to The Best Pizza Awards, is the critically-acclaimed Una Pizza Napoletana.

Anthony Mangieri’s popular restaurant has been a regular presence on the generally well-regarded list, but this year, it moved up 11 places, beating out other sacred New York spots and claiming the real victory — best pizza in the U.S. (Take that, New Jersey and New Haven.) <-

Meh, pizza rankings from an organization out of Krakow, Poland are suspect.

Give it up for the New York Post, ladies and gentlemen!

I was thinking for this list it's all about the chef. No New Haven in the top 100 shows the list is garbage.
I'm not gonna look at the pizzas from each winner, but I'm pretty sure the entire list features Neopolitan style pizza.

TIL: Wylie Dufrense is now an acclaimed pizza maker.

Which Pepe’s is better, West Hartford or Manchester? We’ll be eating in the restaurant.

It's kind of silly to make this before there are any local fresh tomatoes.

This place (Ah-Beetz New Haven Pizza) is opening not far from me in metro Atlanta - anyone been to one of their FL locations? Just putting New Haven in the name doesn’t make it good, and there are some pretty good pizza options that have popped up here over the past decade so I’m not desperate, but I’ll probably give it a try after they open. Let me know if you think I should prioritize it.

That’s what can happen when the state's tourism office buys five billboards and a half-dozen subway station "liveboard" ads claiming pizza superiority in the heart of a city that takes its pizza almost as seriously – almost, but not quite – as Connecticut. No, they did not find much agreement.

“We’re here making sure that everybody knows that Connecticut has the best damn pizza in the country. We’re no longer a drive-through state. This is a drive-to state,” Anthony Anthony, the state’s chief marketing officer, declared on a video take.

Trying a little too hard, no?

Connecticut pizza team heads to NYC to claim superiority. Here's what they found.

I love when New Yorkers get all pissy when someone tells them they're not the best.

"It’s gone beyond viral — it’s gone visceral. Not only did the campaign spark a national food fight, but it moved the needle in real, measurable ways," Anthony said. "We launched this campaign knowing it would generate a lot of opinions — but the reaction has been next-level. From New York City Mayor Eric Adams weighing in to media stunts, to unexpected support from pizza lovers across the country, it’s been incredible to watch the conversation unfold. If anything, it proves just how personal—and passionate—people are about pizza."

I love this quote,"You don't even have a professional basketball team, but you claim to be the basketball capital...Get over yourself because even if you are the pizza capital of the world, you're just Connecticut,"

We're in their head twice!

Someone needs to clue New Yorkers what NIL basically means.

Perhaps a hot take but I didn't find John's to be much better than your average slice shop in NYC. The 3 New Haven spots are significantly better if you ask me.
Portnoy is making his way through CT as we speak. Was just up in the Prospect area.

One fact supporting CT pie - CT has the highest % of Italian Americans per capita of any state in the US, just above RI, at around 17%. East Haven leads the way as a city. Some town in Jersey has the highest of any city in the US.
