If you feel okay with stopping in Worcester on the way down, Volturno is a solid bar with some good creative pizzas. Obviously not Apizza, but a very solid option not far out of the way on your drive. The wife and I have stopped in a couple times driving to/from family in CT
Another yuck place. We went there in September and me and wife were very disappointed. Definitely not worth going out of your way for.

Any PA folk here tried Eda’s Pizzeria in Philly? Owner is a New Haven guy apparently. Portnoy went there a couple of weeks ago and says it 100% does the Pizza Capital of the World justice so I’m going to make a trip there at some point soon.

Shame you had a bad experience, we’ve loved what we got both times. I’d personally rather go there than skip a few towns past UConn. But that’s just me. I acknowledge I haven’t had Wilibrew, and now that it’s been mentioned, I remember hearing it’s good (probably from this thread); bet it’ll be packed on game day

It was a very busy night so maybe they were off their game. It was a Saturday on Parent's Weekend for Holy Cross. We both said we would never go back.

We're heading in early, so should be able to get in at 4-5pm I think, so might be the spot.
It is good. However, if you want a place on the way and just a minute off the interstate, Gido’s is good. You’ll like it.

If you are really going to be early, I’d just go to campus, eat at Blaze and then go have a few beers on campus and walk over to Gampel. That would be my play. I just love being on campus.

I can eat at Blaze at my local mall. My friend isn't from CT and wants some CT pizza. We should be able to get food and still get to campus to have a couple. 8pm start helps with that.

Yeah but I've got time to make a small detour if it's a considerable upgrade.
Yes I did see this, just couldn’t ignore the “on the way” comment

Since you specified your buddy wants CT pizza, definitely don’t stop in Worcester and go as far past UConn as you can lol I’ll see myself out of this mini discussion

Governor Lamont: Connecticut Doubles Down on Its Title as Pizza Capital of the United States

(NEW HAVEN, CT) – Ahead of National Pizza Day, which is celebrated this year on Sunday, February 9, Governor Ned Lamont, state and local officials, and dozens of small business owners from across Connecticut announced a bold set of new initiatives the state is taking to celebrate its world-famous pizza culture, including through a series of high-profile events and activations that blend food, fashion, and pop culture.

“Connecticut pizza isn’t just food, it’s a way of life,” Governor Lamont said. “From New Haven to Hartford to Mystic, our pizza culture is unmatched, and these initiatives will make sure the whole world knows it. This isn’t just about great sauce and slices – it’s about the stories, traditions, and rivalries that have made Connecticut the beating heart of America’s pizza culture.”

Leading the charge is the launch of The Pizza Capital Trail, a statewide collection of Connecticut’s top pizzerias as determined by public voting and a panel of food experts. Other highlights include an interactive pizza-inspired art installation, a fashion collaboration featuring custom Air Jordan 1’s, and a record-setting pizza party aiming to claim a spot in the Guinness World Records.

“Connecticut pizza isn’t just something you eat – it’s something you argue about, obsess over, and defend like your sibling or favorite sports team,” Anthony Anthony, Connecticut’s chief marketing officer said. “We’ve always known we’re the Pizza Capital of the United States, but now we’re proving it in ways that go beyond the food – through art, fashion, and experiences that celebrate the passion baked into every slice.”

A newly released report from the Office of Comptroller Sean Scanlon finds that there are 1,376 pizza restaurants in Connecticut, with New Haven leading the way with 63 pizza establishments. The report also notes Connecticut leads national rankings when it comes to pizzerias per capita and locally-owned establishments".

All of the pizza initiatives are listed here:

Looks good. Is it better than Pepe's in Manchester?
In the eye of the beholder, of course, but it’s been around for a long time and many locals like it. Thin crust.

When you say "long time" you need to be more specific. I grew up 5 miles from where it is and never heard of it. I just looked on their website and it says it's been around for 20 years. I moved out of Connecticut almost 30 years ago. So for an old guy like me I guess 20 years isn't long enough. :)

It started out on South Main Street and then moved to Main Street. I don't remember when it moved to Main Street.

Went to Zeneli for lunch with some work people today. It was their choice and I tagged along. Pretty ballsy move setting up a neopolitan pizza shop across the street from Pepe's apizza.....and they more than held their own. PIcking up my first slice, I was shocked how light and airy it was....and the bite and flavor was superb. One of the co-workers mentioned it was exactly like eating Neopolitan in Italy tastes like and I can see that.

Very, VERY good. Well worth a try.

Times flies. I wanna say over 20 years. It started as a takeout only joint on the other side of 384 before they moved to a brick and mortar place in the middle of Main Street.
