Oh hooray you guys get to have that overrated crap too.

It falls into that same category as Stella/Heineken/Etc., it's everywhere but it's not Bud/Miller/Coors so therefore it has to be good! But it's not. It's crap.



Its pretty good and its cheap. Definitely not overrated considering the price. It's solid.

Probably inappropriate, so I will apologize in advance.

Bill Maher had some hilarious commentary about the French elections a few years ago (when Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal went up against one another).

Now, last week, France had an election, and people over there approach an election differently. They vote. Eighty-five percent of them turned out. You couldn't get 85% of Americans to get off the couch if there was an election between "Tits" and "Bigger Tits," and they were handing out free samples!

Free beer? Bacon? Geez, I would be grateful to get either a beer or an ice cream for four bucks at the XL Center. Or seat-backs at Gampel.
 
There are always some purist WCBB folks who want to believe that 'if you build it, they will come' and certainly a program like Uconn followed that mode over 10 years from the 80s to 90s, but that takes time, a great coach, and some luck. Marketing is a huge part of building (and maintaining) an audience for any sport - just ask the NFL and their big money spends to enhance the game day experience to keep fans in the stadium and not at home on the couch.
So ... I like anything teams try to up the attendance and wish more teams and administrations would do the same. And I think the proposed plan to created semi-permanent sites for the NCAA regionals and finals is also a great idea - get cities and arenas to commit longer term and put their marketing departments to work building a 'brand' over more than a single weekend once every five or ten years.

Now, Dogfish Head brings us its Piercing Pils. Czechoslovakian pilsner has always been a bright, spicy, grassy, floral beer. The noble hop varietals used for this style are peppery and herbal, while bready malt rounds it out. Dogfish owner and brewmaster Sam Calagione and his crew decided to throw a little sweetness in there for an interesting display of flavor balance.

CD, since going to the Czech Rep. back in 05, I have loved this style. I was hesitant when I heard about the pear tea used in it. After trying this beer last week, I have to say it is fantastic. No one should be worried about the addition of pear. It is ever so slight and gives just a touch of a sweet finish, but you still get the awesome crispness of a Czech Pilsner. Definitely glad I tried this one and encourage all those that like this style to do the same. Cheers!
 
When in Brazil drink Antartica. Its the one with the penguins. One of the many reasons I enjoy Rio de Janeiro. That is all.

I'm a huge Harpoon guy, being in Boston for the last 15 months I've been to the brewery at least 20 times

Winter Warmer + cider = apple pie in a glass. Try it ASAP.

Alternatively, and this is harder to put together due to the seasonal differences, but Winter Warmer + UFO Pumpkin = pumpkin pie

Finally, UFO Raspberry + Chocolate Stout = amazing

Harpoon also just came out with a decent Czech pale ale, decent, and a new Barleywine, which I think is fairly good.
 
Have become a fan of the limited edition Longtrail Limbo I.P.A. Has a flavor of grapefruit.

Shiner has a Rudy Red that they put out during the summer. Very good.

Abita has a Grapefruit they are selling now. I wasn't as impressed. Although I did manage to muscle my through four of them.
 
CD and MH - thanks for the tip on the Dogfish Head Pils. I've been a fan of Czech beers since I served in the Army in Germany on the Czech border back in 1969 - 1972. I used to hang out a place that served Pilsner Urquell on tap. We were barely 70 Km from Pilsen and those were the days when they still lagered the beer in wooden barrels in the caverns under the brewery. I took a tour of the brewery in Pilsen in 2004 during a reunion with a group of friends from my days in the service when we were on our way back from Prague to our old site on the Bavarian side of the border. They did take us into the old storage area where the still produce some beer the traditional way as a quality control tool.
I'll agree with HuskyHawk that the Czech Pilsners are best in the summer. In the winter I like darker beers like Sam Adams Winter Lager or a double bock like Spaten Optimator.
 
A friend of mine just bought me Two-Roads Holiday Ale out of Stratford. It is very good. At first, not what I like but after a few sips, the carmel hits the back of your tongue and it is very good.

Winter Warmer is my go-to this time of year but I also love the Magic Hat seasonals. G-Thing and their stout are very tasty.
 
I've been enjoying a lot of New England Brewing's stouts this winter (both the Imperial Storm Trooper Stout and the Fat-Ten-Er Milk Stout). I live in Woodbridge so its a short drive down the Amity Rd. hill to the new brewery for growler refills. I recommend a pilgrimage to everyone!

A colleague of mine got me a growler of Stout Trooper. So good. My boss treated a few us of for a tasting of Kate the Great just before Christmas.
