Baylor Post Game Thread

Diarra had a sub par game but he is still a much better option than Nowell. The less Nowell plays the bigger his legend will grow. But in reality, he is a freshman feeling his way, nowhere near Diarra on the defensive end. And Mahaney was huge tonight. He gave the team a lift at critical moments in both halves. Nowell will get his chances but not in games like tonight.
Diarra played a lot better 2nd half and was in their in all of our key positions. The offense runs best with the ball in his hands.

Gut check game. Huge win the can build on. Texas is a winnable game.
  • Diarra was awful in the first half. In every phase. finally showed up in the 2nd
  • Ross had a bad game. Careless, dumb fouls, he's trying too hard to win minutes. It’s a team game.
  • Mahaney added the shooting off the bench we needed with Alex out and Liam cold
  • Liam is a hyper competitive dude. Smart of him to start driving until he finally broke out of his shooting slump. Huge for us.
  • Johnson was one of our best players for the second game in a row. Can the Yard admit it?
  • Reed is just so reliable.
  • Solo shooting is great but am I the only one who wishes he attacked and finished like all those Baylor guards? Or rebounded more?
  • Stewart should play more. I don’t know what he did to piss Dan off.
Ross had one foul and it was a horrible call.

But I agree he’s pressing too much. Slow down and things will get better

Broken record but we have to learn how to stop dribble penetration. Right now it is absolutely terrible.

Anyone remember a few years ago we lost Bouknight for a few weeks? It felt very similar as today when Karaban was out. human nature sets in and players realized they have to take it to another level.

A blessing in diguise almost. Players found out how to dig deep. An absolutely incredible win. That being said we have GOT TO guard the ball better. Too many easy buckets

Solo Ball not only has no defensive footwork but is like a mummy with his wingspan and hand speed. He always keeps his arms down, no defense.
Noticed that all game today - you’d think a kid with his wingspan would tip passes, get to close outs for blocks every once in a while. He plays with his arms down, or low. It makes you wonder if he just doesn’t listen to coaches, because if we’re noticing they have to be.

Johnson's last foul was BS. Ojianuwa pushed him to get the rebound.
Several of the fouls against him all year have been bogus. I don’t know if it’s his reputation for fouling or that athletically he does some things the refs don’t expect. But sometimes he’s called when he literally never touched the other guy.

I think he’s just really bad

There are few things as rewarding in sports as watching two guys who have pretty much struggled all year perform like Mahaney and Johnson did tonight.

I mean, I was especially down on seeing Johnson start again. Having seen the build of Baylor’s two bigs, there was no reason to think that would work and he wouldn’t foul out in 5 minutes flat but damn he was good tonight.

Mahaney! Still tough to watch on defense but timely offense. Solo and Ross? Oof.

Great win. Great things on tape to correct. It’s Texas time.

Mahaney last 2 defensive possessions cut his man off both times. Solo ball never cut his man off was a turnstile knowing Wright was driving to his right and still couldn’t cut him off. He can shoot but it ends there, not a good passer or driver of the ball. The fact he was in the game and Mahaney wasn’t late is baffling to me.

A win is a win is a win. Tons of heart tonight, especially from Reed, Diarra, and McNeeley.

Diarra made some plays late because prior to that for 30 minutes he wasn’t good and to win a game with him playing his C game and Ball a D is a hard earned win.

Samson was very good as was Reed 2nd half. Liam was really good and is getting better wait until he starts shooting it like he actually can! Stewie a few good minutes as well.

Lots to iron out but a good win no matter!

See I think he can drive the ball well. He just doesn’t do it enough for my liking. He does have a tendency to settle for shooting the 3 when he often has a quickness and athletic advantage over some other 2 guards.

May just take a little time to work AMs confidence up for closing time. We could have certainly used his handle down the stretch and there is little drop off in defense from him to Solo.

I was surprised Dan Hurley made no adjustments on D during free throws down the stretch, to slow down Baylor offensively with the clock being the enemy.

My eye test:
McNeeley: stud
Reed: stud
Johnson: Samson! Good offensively, liability defensively.
Diarra: forced things, played out of sorts.
Mahaney: slowly turning the corner.
Ball: can shoot, that’s it.
Stewart: feels like he belongs on floor,
Looks like he belongs on floor.
Ross: ooof. Lost minutes tonight. Not ready.
Karaban: 2044 UConn men’s head coach

Ball needs to figure out some other way to be impactful, unsustainable shooting luck is carrying his game right now.

Samson at the 4 greatly reduces his foul potential, might need more double bigs.

Liam is gonna be a dude by march, love his physical drives. The shot will fall sooner or later.

Kinda disappointed to see no Nowell or Abraham, but can't complain with the win.

Point guard play still isn't up to standard, need to get Nowell minutes so he's ready by march.
He's clearly a great three point shooter, that's not luck.

Solo? Don’t see it loses the handle on his drive a lot and doesn’t finish well at the rim needs to improve a ton there but even more on D, ouch it’s not good in that end all.

I hate to speculate but you have to wonder if his shooting has gone to his head? Where’s the rest if his game? Built like a RB, but doesn‘t drive. Lazy D. Doesn’t crash the boards. Just wants to shoot 3s. That’s not who he was last year.

I have a lot to say about this game. But above all else I want to shout out the little things: Mahaney hitting all those game-swinging threes, Stewarts steal and free throws, Samsons play in the post.. In my opinion, probably our most important win under Hurley: Our heart put us over the top, lets carry this momentum and continue tearing up the state of Texas whenever possible.
Our most important game under Hurley?

Enough drinks for tonight.

The relying on 3s thing isn't new. He shot way too much last year and looked selfish at times, especially after Steph came back.

I don't recall his defense being so bad. Benefit of having DC behind you, I guess.
