The game has improved immensely and the impact of more quality players is leveling the field. Though, there are significant gaps between a handful of teams and the rest. Geno built his own success and he dominates a niche pond. It would have been interesting to see if he could have translated his success Into mens basketball. My guess is he would be one of the better coaches, though he could never have built a dynasty like he has. There is just too much competition and talent in mens basketball. He should be rightly appreciated for his teams’ amazing accomplishments over decades.First off, I disagree with your statement, womens basketball has seen a lot of parity over the last decade, but per your point, if it’s that easy shouldn’t more teams be able to figure out the formula? La Tech and Tennessee were both dominant for years, but couldn’t sustain. SC seems like they’ve been dominant forever, but yet this is only their second title game in program history. To be a CT basketball fan and not appreciate what Geno has done and basically have the “anyone could do it” mentality doesnt make you a basketball fan.
He said he’d never coach a men’s college team because of 1. The sneaker companies, agents, and posses and 2. Recruiting is a lot harder and 3. Women stay all 4 years and he has a chance to develop their skills fullyThe game has improved immensely and the impact of more quality players is leveling the field. The competition was pretty significant, actually. Within 15 years of his first Final Four in 1991 he surpassed several historical powers, most notably Tennessee. He turned back several challengers, e.g. Notre Dame and Stanford. The competition in women's basketball is utterly terrible, especially when he started his career. Despite being the best ever, you really only have to worry about a handful of games every year.
He created Notre Dame as a challenger. And Louisville after that. Nobody was going to Notre Dame for women’s hoops until they sold it as a chance to play UConn twice a year. Watch the Big East now. Somebody is going to emerge for the same reason. Tennessee yes, was legit as a rival, as Stanford has been and now South Carolina. But it’s nothing like the men’s level of competition. The competition was pretty significant, actually. South Carolina is the latest program that has a chance.
I believe he said he would take the Duke job.He said he’d never coach a men’s college team because of 1. The sneaker companies, agents, and posses and 2. Recruiting is a lot harder and 3. Women stay all 4 years and he has a chance to develop their skills fully
His dream job is an NBA assistant
He’s already Duke of Connecticut.I believe he said he would take the Duke job.
And you think Indiana, NC State and Stanford are poor quality opponents?Depends on the quality of the opponent, and in this case it is very poor.
Hopefully just to run them into the ground for usI believe he said he would take the Duke job.
That would be king of woman’s college basketballHe’s already Duke of Connecticut.
UConn women are like the Michael Jordan Bulls. The other team circles it on their calendar, it is the biggest game of the season. Fans wait outside the stadium for an autograph or just a view of the team. Maintaining focus with all of that adulation is difficult. UConn has mastered it.How easy is it to have huge run streaks and beat almost all opponents game after game without losing focus or just have a bad shooting night? Especially when all of the opponents circle the date and play like it’s their personal Final Four game.
They want a strong lead in to 11 straight months of nothing but Impractical Jokers on TBS.So, Whitney Houston retrospective is what CBS is showing tonight instead of FF basketball?
I get it's 2022 and you can broadcast on any station and people will see the game but it's not like CBS has some massive programming they get to show instead of basketball.
When he started his career, the whole team was from CT and Mass/New England. The competition in women's basketball is utterly terrible, especially when he started his career. Despite being the best ever, you really only have to worry about a handful of games every year.
Since 1982 there have been 14 different womens teams who have won a title and 20 mens (including Louisvilles vacated title) teams. That’s not as wide of a gap as most people portray there to be honestly. The comment about competition in women's basketball still stands even if it has improved recently. Every championship is split between like 8 schools max, and the drop-off between the UConn, Stanford, SC, Notre Dames, etc and the rest is as steep as you can get. The brackets are essentially chalk every game. You have to go back to 2016 to get a Final Four seed less than 2.
