Yes, fans of WCBB can be embarrassed by it. And if S Carolina isn’t embarrassed by it, it says something about the program.
 
Here's my issue with South Carolina's "unanimous #1" banner (other than it is factually inaccurate). It's not just a South Carolina issue as, by definition, it claims a "championship" over every other program. If South Carolina wants to put up a banner for it's program best 29 game win streak, have at it.

To use a UConn example, lots of people were upset when UConn worked with Villanova so that Sales could have the all-time (at the time) UConn scoring record. Since that only involved a UConn record I thought it was a UConn matter, and had no impact on any other program. I would not have felt the same way if the record involved was a NCAA record. Feel the same way about S. Carolina. Since they are "claiming" a NCAA "championship" of sorts, I think they are overstepping.

You know, basketball is a funny sport. You actually have to win on the court. Polls, opinions, etc. don't count. For instance, has there ever been an upset in basketball? That's my point.
 
This is what a program does when it wants to validate itself and not be validated by others. Poor choice in my mind.

It brings to mind all of the banners hanging above Lynah Rink at Cornell. National Championships, Regular Season championships and league (playoff) championships and two retired jersey's. Those are the rules. Cornell was #1 in the final NCAA polls when the season was ended for them. Guess what...no banner

Well, since you asked, they received “26 of 30” in one poll and “26 of 32” in another. How is that “ unanimous”? One other thing that stood out as a bit ridiculous imo was the statement that they (SC) chose not to claim the national championship. In what world do programs choose whether they are national champions? Look, with all due respect, (and Dawn deserves some respect for what she has built there), this is just embarrassing! Instead of enhancing her status as the architect of one of the elite programs this kind of silliness detracts from it. Why not list an imaginary score for each (imagined) opponent they think they would have played in the tournament? That would look good on the banner. I’m breathlessly waiting for Boston’s Final’s MOP banner to go up as well!
 
Hey. I have no problem with what Coach Dawn and her athletic department did with the banner. Coach Neighbors (Arkansas) talked about celebrating successes and how some people were critical of him and his team celebrating winning 2-3 games in a row, when he first got to Arkansas, like they won a title or something. Just something to build on. Pretty sure Coach Staley is doing the same thing with her program.
 
I suppose in Dawn's world she has declared General P. G. T. Beauregard the winner too. Where is that banner?

Maybe they mean the AP and Coaches Poll so that both polls were unanimous in who they were ranking #1 heading into the Tournament.

Now if the writers knew this was a FINAL POLL, would they have voted differently? Also, the NCAA came out and stated they wouldn't have a champion nor would they take a "Final Vote" so that's where Dawn's illogic shines supreme...no one supports her view.

To all the "upset Gamecock fans", yes we respect what Dawn has achieved but we do not condone "awarding" unearned accolades, so if you are upset with our views, perhaps you should go vent on Cockytalk or whatever that forum is, as you will not find any sympathy here.

Again NO ATTACK personally but I can see where some who cherish the women's game finding it a step below honorable. The wording could have reflected a great season with out being misleading. Banners are simply recruiting tools and wow factors for new fans that should have a trophy to match JMHO.

With all due respect for Dawn and all she has achieved, leading a team at a institution of higher education, this was not well thought out or worded. As for embarrassment should be only to SCar, one must be remiss to the fact she is the head coach of USA basketball.
With her drive and toughness one would find it hard to believe she has succumbed to the everyone gets a trophy generation.

At least they didn't declare themselves National Champ.

I'd disagree in that most people who see unanimous think it means everyone. Not 64 voters of varying degree of knowledge and loyalty. Notice how the word polls was omitted from the banner. I'm sure it was just a lack of banner space. :rolleyes:

I think of it from college football where in the pre-playoff days, a "unanimous" #1 was the #1 in both major polls, as opposed to a disputed/split poll situation.

I remember when the Gamecocks came to Storrs ranked #1. We wacked them by 25. I would also venture that if UConn hadn't been shocked by MissSt a few years back, SC would never have won a NC. In that championship year, the Gamecocks lost to the Huskies on their home court by 18.
I like Dawn personally (though a lot of top talent has gone through Columbia and won zilch), but her banner reminds me of another possibility: "SC: Where Quality is a Slogan."

You remember that far back? I do too and when it said unanimous No 1 it meant you got all the 1st place votes. I remember a true unanimous No 1 in 2013. I haven't looked at their wall but I don't think Mulkey thinks they won anything.

In 2013 Baylor was the unanimous pre-season, intra season and No 1 on every poll and rating service. If being an undisputed No 1 meant anything they would have a 2013 banner flying next to their 2012 championshjp banner.

But as a gamecock fan said, it's their banner.

Considering the reason for the cancelled tournament it does seem to lack a sense of oh humanity maybe?? I mean your celebrating a successful yet incomplete season due to a pandemic killing how many people??

It was only 11 points and it barely felt like that...with Gray playing the PF position SC had a much better chance in the second matchup and would’ve been much harder to guard than UConn fans would ever give credit for.

Hey huskyd, I was thinking the same thing, that if UCONN wasn't upset by Miss. St in the semi's they would have creamed SoCar in the finals! Dawn should kiss Geno's 11 Championship rings for giving her that Championship! I'm NOT a Dawn Staley fan and this is one of the reasons why!
Dawn is pouting because she feels robbed of the National Championship for 2020! Which IMHO SoCar would not have won. Oregon was the best team in reality (as stated above) and would have proved it on the court, for real if the tournament went off as usual!
