Banners?

No idea what you are talking about nor what Mulkey has to do with college football.
In 2013 Baylor was the unanimous pre-season, intra season and No 1 on every poll and rating service. If being an undisputed No 1 meant anything they would have a 2013 banner flying next to their 2012 championshjp banner.

But as a gamecock fan said, it's their banner.

I think of it from college football where in the pre-playoff days, a "unanimous" #1 was the #1 in both major polls, as opposed to a disputed/split poll situation.
I thought the term that was used was consensus #1...

Considering the reason for the cancelled tournament it does seem to lack a sense of oh humanity maybe?? I mean your celebrating a successful yet incomplete season due to a pandemic killing how many people??

I remember when the Gamecocks came to Storrs ranked #1. We wacked them by 25. I would also venture that if UConn hadn't been shocked by MissSt a few years back, SC would never have won a NC. In that championship year, the Gamecocks lost to the Huskies on their home court by 18.
I like Dawn personally (though a lot of top talent has gone through Columbia and won zilch), but her banner reminds me of another possibility: "SC: Where Quality is a Slogan."
It was only 11 points and it barely felt like that...with Gray playing the PF position SC had a much better chance in the second matchup and would’ve been much harder to guard than UConn fans would ever give credit for.

Hey huskyd, I was thinking the same thing, that if UCONN wasn't upset by Miss. St in the semi's they would have creamed SoCar in the finals! Dawn should kiss Geno's 11 Championship rings for giving her that Championship! I'm NOT a Dawn Staley fan and this is one of the reasons why!
Dawn is pouting because she feels robbed of the National Championship for 2020! Which IMHO SoCar would not have won. Oregon was the best team in reality (as stated above) and would have proved it on the court, for real if the tournament went off as usual!

I believe "unanimous" refers to the fact they were #1 in all the polls (AP, Coaches). [Massey isnt a poll.]

It's tricky - I can understand the desire to want to recognize a team that was #1 and didnt get a chance to compete for the title through no fault of its own. Bitter pill.

At least they didn't declare themselves National Champ.

FWIW, I dont think anyone was going to come close against Oregon.
Give them a plaque or something. This is an insult to banners.

It could only be “embarrassing “ to SCar. Nobody else can be embarrassed by it.

uconn fans can feel contemptuous about it but not “embarrassed.”

we get it. We ain’t UConn. Not even close. But it’s our banner
[shrugs]

LOL I GUESS WE’LL NEVER KNOW :p

I don't understand why so many here care what banners SC puts up at their place. That is their prerogative and they can do what they wish to celebrate what they want. Doesn't effect us in any way. Teams put banners in their gym to celebrate things that were important to their programs. Over time as a team improves old ones are sometimes replaced by new more important things. The biggest highlight for some programs might be getting into the NCAA tournament. Put up a banner and celebrate that. UConn has done that every year since 1989. Banners for that would fill the gym and hide ones for higher goals.

The banner seems quite petty. It gives the players an out. It removes the chip that they should be playing with this year. Instead of instilling the mentality of "we need to take it to them and prove ourselves" the coach has basically given them something they did not have an opportunity to prove. So, prove it this year!

I've always respected Dawn but feel as though she has had more talent to work with than she has been able to develop. This banner raises an eyebrow for me. IMHO, it will not impress any potential recruit. It certainly decreases my respect for the coaches and administration. As was mentioned earlier in this thread, it gives a trophy for having had a pretty good year.

To me Dawn Staley has always been haughty with a chip on her shoulder ready to be called into service at any moment. This banner is just a manifestation of that, reminding everyone that she thinks her team should have been awarded something it did not earn.

Why did so many non-UCONN fans care that Geno worked out a deal with Harry to let an injured Nykesha Sales score a basket after her season ending injury to become #1 all time scoring leader? After all, it was ONLY a UCONN record and had ZERO to do with any other school, program or record.

Answer - because both UCONN and SC are big time programs. So there is obviously going to be much more interest in the going-ons at those schools. And for the record, I think it's tacky and classless. Dawn is not acting like she's been there before. All her whining about "we would accept the NC trophy if they wanted to give one out" is not only a bad look for her and SC, but also a bad look as the head coach of the US National Team.

Even children know that words and actions have consequences. Dawn's tacky and classless display is not a good look IMHO, and I expect that every passionate fan base is having some sort of similar conversation, whether they agree with her or not.

Question. Does this mean that South Carolina will now be cutting down the nets after every game?

Ok, how about a little bit of sanity on this perspective:
1. All head strong coaches, regardless of success certainly have their "brain cramp moments", including Geno. I absolutely agree this is not a good look for Dawn to have harped and promoted and getting a banner up in her arena. But to call her tacky and classless is a bridge too far. She had been a beacon of logic and sportsmanship until this bizarre episode. Let's keep in mind that the AD also enabled her to do that. Their local sportswriters also have not spoken out on this ill-conceived logic.
2. We can and should certainly point out the inconsistencies of logic and appropriateness but let's keep personal attacks at bay.
3. The remedy for this is to continue to beat the 1 time National Champion every year...

Now back to the regularly scheduled program...

I disagree. Tacky. Like @EricLA said, not a good look for coach of our senior national team - might want to comport 😝 herself with a bit more class and dignity.

I would venture to say they were fortunate to even make it to the final four that year. I was at the game and had no dog in the fight and Florida St got hosed by the officials at a critical juncture at the end of that game. It often takes luck to win a Nattie and SC had their share of it that year.

I also had a lot of respect for Dawn, until she began to open her mouth every chance she got.

Has anyone ever heard of a major college or any team giving itself an award? This was based on a poll at a moment in time, not final performance.
A few years ago didn’t a team in Florida declare themselves National Champions for having an undefeated season in football?

UCF. I sympathize a bit with that situation since it really is very difficult for a non power 5 to make the CFP even if they run the table and they cant really get the elite non conference competition they would need. They took alot of grief but I personally viewed it as more of a protest against the current system.

It’s stupider than the Civil ConFLict trophy....thought nothing could bump that off the stupidity list, but this does it.
