Women’s college sports of volleyball and softball are pretty popular as well and getting more popular.

More kids grow up playing the beautiful game than any other sport (I think) and it's a great way for top players to get a free education. Granted it may not mean much in terms of value like football and basketball but it's still a great NCAA sport. If the B1G sponsors soccer (they could use a 12th program), soccer isn't going anywhere. And surely it's a lot less expensive to run than most other sports because there is no expensive equipment. A pair of boots and a ball.

And I'd imagine the average University donation from a soccer family is higher than average. Athletic departments are more than just a simple operating budget - they're a marketing arm, a driver of endowments, etc.

If you are superstar soccer player you are not playing college soccer.

Men’s soccer should be a club sport. I think you will find out in the future actual students at colleges will get tired paying for non-revenue sports via student fees.

No better example than Rizza and UConn. Way bigger single donor than any b-ball alumni. That plus attendance and history means men’s program not going anywhere, haters. A particularly unselfish and generous donation that benefits softball and baseball.

Excellent high school soccer players can get a schollie and go on to become doctors and lawyers and investment bankers. Just like in all the other olympic sports.

That is true for what, 99% of D1 athletes? A superstar by this definition is anyone not playing professionally or getting paid. Hell, most non-revs are not getting full scholarships. For many kids, the dream is to play D1. Don’t crap on that.
And UConn has guys drafted into the pros yearly. I’m not a big soccer follower at any level, btw. And I remember when UConn sucked at most everything but soccer. Just not interested in having colleges be miserly around opportunity in non-rev sports. If D1 becomes only revenue sports at revenue schools, I’m out. I’ll follow the real pros - a superior product.

Is that what college sports for most universities and individuals is about? Missed that memo. I guess the purpose is for adults to enjoy the entertainment of revenue sports, not opportunity for young athletes - many, btw who are real students.

Approximately 1/3 of college soccer players are NonUS players. Those foreign players are washed up players.

Hundreds of thousands of kids I might add. As many playing any sport. Limiting this cohort’s opportunity to keep playing is a strange take in this thread.

That is great and all I am saying is the student-athletes or the fans/boosters should pay for the non-revenue sports. If I am a college student I have seen my tuition increasing at a much higher rate than inflation and should not have to pay to support these non-revenue sports.

They are paying more for football than any other sport. And a lot of non-rev athletes are paying full freight. A full athletic program is a win-win. It may die off, and that would be a shame. You are right, alums need to step up, and they historically have - à la Tony Rizza.

At this point it’s so low quality it should either be a club sport or just dropped completely.

Silly. You think they are giving scholarships to American kids? How many full scholarships do you think are on a D1 team.

You might look into that Detective.

They are not playing high school soccer. They are playing in Academies or private club teams.

If they play HS it’s the soccer equivalent of a side gig.

I don’t understand that. Should athletes not have to pay to support the drama program? Students who never get sick not have to pay for the campus infirmary? If a school thinks it’s great to have non-revenue sports to attract and benefit some students, why is that a problem?

If the non-revenue athletes are on a full scholarship how are they supporting the drama program? By attending theatre productions? lol

They absolutely are giving scholarships to high school kids. Kids play high school, clubs, and prep schools. Not sure where you are getting your info but I see it every year. UConn has many international kids but they also have 4 kids from CT.

Exactly. If the SEC does not play a sport, it is irrelevant. If tiddlywinks had an NCAA Champinship and there was revenue to be had, they’d be cheating their asses off to get the top Tiddlywinkers to their program. They do not even play soccer.
 
Outdoor track is the #1 HS sport by participation, with FB a close second, then Basketball. Obviously if the ladies played FB, it would be #1. Track is hanging tough(men’s) at the Intercollegiate level, but faces challenges all the time.

Yes it appears you've misunderstood the point of D1 sports. It is about money and marketing for the university.
