I thought I knew enough. I didn't think flying at altitude for a few hours had any effect on running performance. Certainly doesn't seem to affect the Kenyans and Ethiopians.

The 2023 PAC 12 championships resulted in Washington, Stanford, Colorado, and Oregon so seeing Washington and Oregon win the Big 10 isn't a surprise. Even with the dreaded flight situation.

You take two relatively equal athletes. One is rested and the other isn't. The better rested one has an advantage every time.

The Kenyans are accustomed to it. Plus airplane cabins are pressurized. Hydration and rest is the issue.

Are you comparing the impact of long-term training at altitude with having to fly for 4 hours? That's like comparing apples to zebras.

(and to be clear, at 60+ I travel by air 20-30 hours 6-8 times a year don't think there is much if any impact on a 20-year-old flying 4 hours).

Yeah, that's what I'm doing

Bingo. A plane ride has no effect on a 20 year old running a cross country meet. That was my original point. We do tend to go in circles here. Round and Round.

People have theorized that the travel for the west coast teams would be an issue. Someone used the fact that Oregon and Washington performed well in cross country to disprove that theory. I opined that it really didn't apply to cross country because the meet only lasts 20 minutes and no amount of travel would impact the race. Assuming the athlete had plenty of time to rest either on the plane or at the hotel. That is how I came to state that the flying had no effect on cross country. I figure the travel still probably affects other athletes who have to fly to the Midwest all season long.

Most of these athletes were traveling for tournaments well before they were in college. As a teacher, I have many of my athletic kids travel all around the country for all sorts of sports. I have had kids miss a week of school because they were 2000 miles away for a tournament. Hockey, soccer, baseball and softball are the worst offenders.

These high level athletes have been traveling all their lives. Is it ideal? Nope, but they are used to it.

3 of the 4 former PAC schools qualified for the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament - USC (B1G Regular Season Champion), UCLA (B1G Tournament Champion) and Washington. Travel doesn't seem to impact the women's soccer teams.
Alternative likelihood, the ex-Pac 12 women’s soccer teams departed a markedly more competitive conference than they joined in the new B1G.

Saw the B1G has 4 of the top 5 teams in CFB which is pretty nuts. Can't remember the last time they were this highly regarded.

I’ll give Mick the benefit of the doubt about the physicality as it pertains to his roster building for this year, but by next year he should have the physical guys he needs via the portal. He’s got the resources and UCLA is very enticing to many people for a lot of reasons. He’s a great coach of physicality and has always had overly physical teams. The roster is on him.

Maybe but he has had more than two years of knowing what was coming up and a transfer portal. So not much slack.

Simply cut the entire compliance department. NCAA enforcement is over
I'd like to think that that's a bad thing, but given how random they were in enforcement, I don't.
