B1G 25-26

Woke up thinking about Maryland basketball. How good can Saylor be in her final season. Will Smikle, Garzon, Saylor, and Okanawa all start together. In any event I came across this video. Maybe I missed this legislation. I'm sure it's been covered on the board. But does this kinda circumvent the whole international players making money in college issue, as they were not eligible for NIL. Tbh this could be just a lack of journalism in this piece but are colleges simply just paying players directly including international players. Apologies if this is the wrong thread to discuss the latter.

It may be worth a different thread, but you're not alone in the confusion. Through my friends with kids playing in the US, I've gotten the impression that things have changed. More schools are paying their international students directly. I have also noticed a trend with more international MBB players committing to NCAA programs lately. Considering some of the programs they're leaving, which have developed NBA pros, this is a significant change from a few years ago.

I have always admired how some programs release their full season schedule back in August. Sometimes in July. Michigan and Minnesota, and a few other Big Ten teams, have not posted anything on their 2025-26 schedule. Then we got Maryland. Over there posting their '25-'26 schedule all early and junk. Nobody likes a showoff, Maryland, USC, and Oregon. Just chill posting your schedules so early.

I wonder if these payments are in the form of revenue sharing. I could see where that money, coming directly from the schools and not NIL collectives, would be considered much like scholarships in terms of legality.

The Big Ten is going to be unusually brutal this season. I was reading up on Illinois women's basketball. They are looking to be more competitive than usual. I can't wait for the season to start!!

I like how some of the UCLA players stuck around after the Final Four last season to watch UConn celebrate the win. Sometimes those moments push a player, or players, harder to raise their game and competitive fire and sometimes it has the opposite effect. We shall see what develops. I do hope that UCLA makes it to the Final Four again and into the Championship game.

By the Final Four weekend last season it seemed pretty clear to me that UConn was going to win it all, but UCLA really got embarrassed in that game in a way that doesn’t often happen to #1 overall seeds. We’ll see if they can channel it into fuel. It’s been done before: South Carolina turned two painful semifinal defeats in 2021 and 2023 to titles the following years, and before that Notre Dame avenged an Elite Eight heartbreaker to Stanford by winning it all.

UCLA’s roster is stronger this year - I think Kneepkens and Leger-Walker are better scorers than any Bruins guard from last year. Barker will be missed but the younger Betts has a lot of potential. It’s this year or bust though because there’s not a lot left after this year.
