Autry out at Syracuse

Right decision to get rid of him instead of extending the suffering

Syracuse hasn’t made the tournament since a fluke run in 2018. Since moving to the ACC, they have an equal amount of double digit finishes in conference than top 5 finishes (2 each). This is a team that is limping and not operating from a position of strength, they need to nail this hire and start a full rebuilding job

The home run hire is Schertz, but he will likely pick a bigger name program. The rest of their top options are former players Hop and GMac? Lots of uncertainty ahead!

For all its flaws, if we’re being serious Syracuse would be a great first job for Luke. Or, frankly, for any coach.
Yeah. There are several Bball schools i can think of that have an immediate chance to be great with even a decent hire. Our hatred of Syracuse (which i dont understand anymore) shouldn't cloud that fact. There were people on the BY who thought Scheyer would fail at Duke. (I dont think anyone would fail there tbh)

It seems fitting that Autry tree is riding off into the sunset.

I am very supportive of either Kimani or Luke getting a head coaching job, but, man, either of them going to Syracuse just feels so wrong. I feel like Kimani in particular, would be dangerous there given his New York roots.

Personally, I would love for GMac to get the job is that seems the most natural fit for me to maintain my dislike for the program. My runner-up choice would be Hopkins, just because I feel like Syracuse University hasn't yanked that guy around quite enough yet.

Agreed. Power Conference school with history, an NCAA title and top five national home attendance even this year with how bad they have been.

Surprised there isn't more noise around Mike Hopkins-At least for an interview. Maybe he's happy with Pelicans
He really didn't like the world on fire at Washington after the first couple of seasons.

What bigger name programs are out there that need a coach? How many programs are a bigger name than Syracuse in all of college basketball?

Honestly, tradition aside, I'm not so sure. I do think it's a good fit for Kimani. I just as soon it didn't happen though.

I'm amazed we've kept them for as long as we have, and it wouldn't surprise me for them to get serious offers this off-season.

There are boosters, members of the BoT at Syracuse, and reportedly, Carmelo Anthony, who want Hopkins - supposedly because he is claiming behind the scenes that he can raise major $$$ and NIL funds. I would love to see a Hop hire because he’s not a good coach and has zero ties to East coast recruiting now, but I doubt it will happen.

Hodgson worries me a bit because I believe he could have some success early. GMac simply isn’t happening. They aren’t hiring another coach after Autry from the JB tree. Simply won’t happen.

I can’t imagine why anyone on the yard would want to see Kimani in upstate NY. He would kill it recruiting the Northeast and create serious buzz. Luke too. No thanks.

There is a negative aura hanging over that program. IDK if it's being an odd duck in the ACC, Boeheim strangling them in his final years, or just all the losing. This hire feels critical for them to get close to what they were again

I have no idea who Josh Schertz is, but winning 80% of your games is pretty damn impressive, regardless of level.

Seems like St. Louis is going to really up his contract and he's going to stay there and wait for a top tier job.

I think Murray and Young should target a mid major school that has advantages over their conference mates so that they can develop as a head coach. I think it is a big ask to turn around Syracuse as a first time head coach which has a multitude of program issues that need to be addressed.

A school like Syracuse needs to hire a coach with a proven track record of winning like Villanova did with Willard.

Wish I saw this! What exactly did he say @superjohn?

I saw it too - i couldn’t dislike that guy more.

He said Syracuse has the 3rd lowest NIL budget and their 2 best players played poorly this year. “Any program would have a down year if that’s the case. If Boozer and Evans both had down years, Duke would be down. I think Adrian is a good coach but he knows this falls on the HC when that happens.”

What a clown. He’s the reason Autry got the job when he probably didn’t deserve it. Not surprised he stuck up for him but he’s always gotta be a pr**k about everything.

Why so?

Even with Boeheim, they've been, at best, mediocre since joining the ACC. If you're a 5* recruit, you're hoping to be OAD; nonetheless, why spend the single year in Syracuse (even if you’re from the Northeast), if you're also being recruited by, say, Duke, UNC, or another ACC school? Even Carmelo Anthony’s kid, a 4* freshman, is probably leaving after this year.

At the same time, if they’re throwing out names like Jay Wright, Billy Donovan, and Brad Stevens, the expectations for the new coach are wildly unrealistic, e.g., top echelon finish in ACC, NCAA at-large bid, etc. So why would this quagmire be a great first job for Luke Murray?

If anything, I’d be looking for a successful, mid-major head coach with a history of recruiting success in the Northeast. For example, Scott Burrell at Southern Connecticut has won more than 170 games in 11 years; James Jones has won almost 440 games at Yale.

[and I say all this as a Syracuse alum!]

He wasn't even charitable enough to say "played poorly." He said they were horrible or played horrible this season.

He's such a jack off.

Something is wrong with the Syaracse AD if Hodgson is not their next coach. You won't find a more Upstate NY guy. His time under Nate Oats as well as two successful HC jobs is a better resume than McNamara or most others listed.

Next in line is probably either Gerry McNamara or Mike Hopkins...my $$$ is on McNamara

Who are their two best players supposed to be?

Jeff Borzello says the three names he's hearing are (McNamara, Schertz, Hodgson) and another name to watch is Luke Murray.

"This is one of the most storied programs in college basketball, and we intend to hire a proven winner who will build on that legacy," Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said in a statement. "We are looking for a coach who can recruit at the highest level, develop players and compete for championships, conference and national. Syracuse fans deserve nothing less, and that is exactly what we are going to deliver."

I would venture to say that the past three years are what Syracuse fans truly deserve.

Huh? You're not disagreeing with me. Given that Luke has never been a head coach anywhere, even a mediocre power conference program is a great first job. (And, based on the Dome and the history, while Syracuse has been mediocre you can easily argue it's an above average power conference job.) It would be a good first job for Luke precisely because they could easily get someone like James Jones. who has already won at a lower level of division 1.
