Rather than attribute the wins over Chicago & Las Vegas on the absence of one player (Arike), I'll flip the switch and say that it has more to do with taking advantage of multiple players. To wit:
I shoulda put a smiley on my comment. I agree with you that they've really benefitted from having a true point guard on the floor and figuring out how to get McCowan involved.

I think she has been great but it seems she still has minute limitations (fitness?). What comes accross to me is that she does not show frustration if she thinks the refs blew calls.
When she was at MSSt, McCowan was in good shape. She played 35+ minutes in big games. I saw some folks talking about her jogging up the court, but that was always on offense. Nobody plays for Vic lollygagging up the court on defense, and T never did. Whether it's the case now, I dunno, but she's played effectively for 30+ minutes in a few games recently.

Aari Mcdonald blows by Samuelson and gets the 2 and the and one to prob clinch the game. Something about her facing huskies brings out the best in her.

Lou with a three with 3.2 s left to tie it up against Atlanta. The Sparks didn't bring Nelson-Ododa in for defense, and Cheyenne Parker put one in against Nneka with 0.3 s left. Nneka sank the last shot but didn't beat the buzzer.

Exciting end to the game.

I'll probably be wrong again, but it's looking like LA's playoff hopes are all but gone now.

Yes, Bigboote, it was a clutch shot by KLS... nice to see her coach had the confidence in her to take that shot.

I'll bet Nneka's kicking herself for letting Cheyene so easily beat her on the baseline.

I agree, nwhoopfan, the Sparks are in dire straits.

Copper has been coming on strong for Chicago. She started kinda slow, missed some games and then had to get reintegrated, all while the team was figuring out how to play w/ Meesseeman. She's back to looking pretty close to last year's playoffs version of Copper recently. That doesn't bode well for the rest of the league.

I've definitely noticed she's been in a prolonged slump. With almost no scoring from the bench, they can't really afford to have a starter not scoring.

Can we take a moment to ponder what the thought process was from the Aces constructing a bench with Colson, Sheppard and Bell? Those 3 have collectively done just about nothing all season. There absolutely had to be better players available, and still are. Syd Wiese has been out of the league for a couple years, she's 10X better than any of this trio. I'm sure there are many, many other players you could say that of. I think Karlie Samuelson had a cameo appearance w/ somebody early in the season, but I don't think she's been on a roster for a while. I'd also take her over any of these 3. Jefferson and Dangerfield were available at some point, again much better than these 3. You get the point. I don't understand why the Aces decided to stand pat with a bunch of obviously unproductive players.
On choosing the Aces bench. In the off-season, the Aces lost their entire coaching staff, their GM, and Becky was coaching in the NBA up until right before training camp started. The newly hired President was Nikki Fargas. From the looks of the draft picks, she’s the one who picked them. #7 Mya Hollingshed (Colorado) CUT, #11 Bell, #13 Khalsa Pointer (LSU) CUT, and #23 Aisha Sheppard, and then another LSU girl was the last pick. Surely they have to strengthen the bench for next year. That’s a pretty deep draft class too so maybe they will at least be able to help. Hopefully it will improve for next year.

Evina in mop up time for the Mystics in 4th had an impressive showing. 10 pts in 8 minutes. 2-3 from 3, (3-4 in total). 2-3 FT and a steal. (+16 FWIW). Her best game in the WNBA I think

I am almost positive the Aces traded away their picks for next year to move up in the draft this year.

I still can't believe they passed over Henderson three times. Her style of play is tailored made for the Aces. I truly thought they traded up for the #7 pick to get her. The only rookie I would take a chance on keeping is Bell, because I think she can be a potential prolific scorer. Outside of her and Rupert, as a GM I would be willing to get rid of the rest of bench and see who I can get from the off-season or draft.

The stats bear this out.

Pre All Star game (17 games), Copper averaged 13.8ppg and 5.1rpg on 44.4% FG.
Post All star game (10 games), Copper is averaging 18.6ppg and 7.6rpg on 52.4% FG.

Her ppg and fg % have also improved each month of the season thus far (May/June/July/August).

Yes they did and when I saw who they picked I couldn't believe it. Next year's draft is deep, deep so I think they'll be able to pick up some pieces anyway but whoever was in charge this year should have been fired....or maybe there was no one in charge.

Yup, I couldn’t believe they did that given the increased comparative talent of the 2023 draft.

Obviously, I am on the "Copper train" (represents my home town well) as well, as I have previously mentioned her season's progress multiple times on your other WNBA thread. This does make Chicago imposing, especially with their bench play of Stevens, Gardner, & Allemand. Nonetheless, I will still "buy low" on the Aces with their recent skid and say they will overcome their defensive regression, lack of bench, not having home court advantage nor momentum, and predict they will overcome this for the 1st title in LV.

As you previously stated, Fargas was in charge. She did draft her niece (KP) and Aifuwa from her LSU team.

I still think that you can find diamonds in the rough, even from previous years. Look at Gardner, who had been productive overseas for years and Caldwell, who after I saw her 1st game vs. Dallas realized it was clear that she is better than at least a dozen of the current bench players around the league. She was released after her 1st 7-day hardship and available. Maybe the owners, presidents, GMs dismissed them because of their collegiate ppg? As nwhoopfan correctly stated, there are plenty of former WNBA players that would be a huge upgrade for the Aces bench (& parts of other team's as well), but maybe the contracts would be a little too large within the parameters of the CBA (as previously stated by TheFarmFan).

Criticizing the Hollingshed pick at #8 is definitely not a case of hindsight is 20/20. No major publication's mock draft had her in the 1st round and I just found one that projected her #27 (many did not go beyond round 1). Unbelievable.

Also, Phoenix just got outrebounded by 25 vs. Connecticut. I realize that the Sun's frontline is relentless on the boards, but instead of starting 4 guards (I know Peddy gives it her all to rebound from that position, but against Jones x2 -- seriously?), why not take a chance on someone who was 7-7 in the same game Shakira was 3-16, outscored both Lyss & Queen the next game, and had the same number of points as Naz in the S16? These were all NCAA touney games, all 4s & 5s, and that's 60% of the all-rookie team plus a current starter.

Arike should return tonight. Even though it is vs the Fever, it'll be interesting to see how Johnson divvies the minutes between playing Harris/Burton & playing Ogunbowale, Gray, and Mabrey together.

I got Stewie, A'ja, Nneka, A Thomas, & Plum 1st team. Crazy not to include a member of the Sky, but their top 4 are so balanced. Speaking of Sky, I think she was up there for most of the year, but fell to 2nd team recently.

Should be very interesting, indeed. As you and I have discussed, I think she should keep the lead/point guard duties to Burton/Harris and rotate Marike and Gray in the other two slots.
Also, keep Big T involved hard, which should open space for all those guards.

Now, let's see what happens.

I think Stewie, A'ja, Plum are locks for first team. You could go make an argument for A. Thomas, SDD, Nneka, EDD, Ionescu, Arike in the other two spots (I'd say in that order), and I wouldn't be too upset.
