Caron had some rough patches. We were an NIT team that year and he had moments of immaturity. "We're winners, not chicken dinners" was a quote that we held over his head when we slumped.
Okafor did it exactly right - come in with low expectations as a lightly regarded recruit and far exceed them as a freshman. Then get much better (adding offensive game) as a sophomore to exceed expectations again. Then develop an injury as a junior which could give you a pass for a bad day when expectations are through the roof (and win a title). And be a public relations gold mine with his academic proficiency off the court.
Ray was close to the same path (wasn't as lightly regarded, but still exceeded expectations as a frosh and soph). He just didn't get the ending right.
