To start the season sure but eventually Mahaney will be the starting PG. Hes more of pg than Newton ever was before he got here and he turned out to be pretty good. Mahaney will be the PG here with Solo at the 2 and they will be explosive together. By March it could be the best backcourt in the country.Mahaney is definitely more of a combo guard that will he out starting 2. Diarra is starting at pg with nowell as the backup. No way are we going to have nowell as 3rd string pg. Ball will backup at sg.
Yes and different position. Mahaney is starting at 2. Ball will need to earn his minutes and i am sure he will.I have to think Hass earned the start over Ball. No? Ball was basically garbage time the majority of Feb and March.
He can play more the Cam spot. Diarra and Nowell will be our PGs.To start the season sure but eventually Mahaney will be the starting PG. Who exactly do you think is playing ahead of McNeeley? Will be a lottery pick next year so you won’t have to worry about transferNo
He wants to graduate and have the potential to do something no UConn player (and no CBB player in 50 years) ever has.
Plus I suspect he didn't get the guarantee he was looking for after the last-minute workout with Portland.
At the very least we should be in the championship conversation all year long, which itself speaks to our staying power after back-to-back championships.
He was one of the top 3 point shooters in the NBA combine.Glad that Alex is back and I do hope that he develops his three pointer with us instead of struggling in the NBA. His lack of a good three point shot is what made him marginally desirable this year. That’s my opinion for what it is worth.
He said in dausters interview that graduating played no part in his decision…contrary to what many here thought. Said he could always finish up, even if was in the NBADidn’t he promise his grandmother he would graduate?
Alex wants to become one of the very few players in college basketball history with 3 title rings. Kareem. Walton, Laetner all had 2. No one has won 4.
By 'one of' you mean 'the' top 3 point shooter. He was one of the top 3 point shooters in the NBA combine.
Different sport but amazing nonetheless
Do you follow basketball at all?Glad that Alex is back and I do hope that he develops his three pointer with us instead of struggling in the NBA. His lack of a good three point shot is what made him marginally desirable this year. That’s my opinion for what it is worth.
I’ll be right over! This is for all of you.Courtesy of Horatio. Congrats!!!!! View attachment 101091
Hurleys lineup formula is not monolithic. He is very flexible in what he likes to do. Diarra i love the kid but i dont see him running the offense for 25 min a game and then handing it over to a fresh for 15 minutes. Solo is being overlooked and he is likely to take a big step forward and is definitely not playing pg as hes far to explosive to not take advantage of as a scorer and he will be our sg. Mahaney is also not going to be guarding opposing sg as he could struggle with that and at this point there is no CAstle to cover defensive short comings although i think Stewart could be that with his strength, length and quickness. We shall see as its a nice problem to have.He can play more the Cam spot. Diarra and Nowell will be our PGs.
Mahaney can still initiate the offense even if he’s not playing “point” but diarra and nowell will almost always be guarding the opposing PG. the lineup is based on defensive matchups our guys are mostly interchangeable on offenseHurleys lineup formula is not monolithic. C’mon now let’s be serious. Maybe number 2 behind Bama.![]()
College basketball rankings: Mark Sears' return to Alabama bumps Tide to No. 2 in Top 25 And 1

Good insights by Finkelstein. Alex has a lot of brains. There are other possibilities besides playing in the NBA for an entire career. Coaching at either the college or pro level can be lucrative as well. It's just great that his hard work and dedication will continue to pay dividends to him and whomever he ultimately spends his career with. With his decision, another nice write up about AK and the team.

Two-time national champion Alex Karaban returning to UConn for junior season
Karaban will be the lone returning starter for UConn next seasonwww.cbssports.com
Kareem had three, along with three of his teammates (Warren, Allen, Shackleford). What starter in NCAA history has won three. I thought Kareem did but someone else referenced he only had two. Did Jamaal Wilkes maybe?
Pretty sure Spencer is focused on getting a summer camp invite, not bulking up to to play the 5 spot for us...Mahaney and Ball could be the most effective 1-2, Diarra playing more minutes than last year but a similar role. Nowell has a chance to be a back breaker when we and our opponents have to go to the well for a back up PG. Guard play wins championships
3-4, WTF. McNeeley looks like a dangerous weapon and being with Alex creates a lot of mismatches offensively. Then you have Stewart who is the best athlete of the three and has a developing game to shoot, attack the rim and rebound. Hopefully there is even going to be spells of Abraham being a BIG 4 for us
5. Spencer, please add some bulk and coordination this year. That’s all we need you to do. Reed, great touch, great footwork. He has to learn to be a more willing passer and limit the TOs. I think he’s being undervalued regarding impact with a game that fits somewhere between Sanogo and Donovan. We have two different big men again. We can go low post or run you.
I think this team we will resemble more of a 23 team than 24, not as a premier talented as either but deeper with talent and wider with range if possibilities. It will be Danny’s biggest coaching challenge but also the most creative.
This team has FF written all over it
I do think Hass has Dan Hurley’s confidence. But, it always comes down to ‘being earned’. Being smart with the ball - handle - solid defense - and a reliable FT shooter (because that wins the close ones). We have some terrific players and terrific coaches. Another exciting time in the scheme of things… I really am excited about Alex’s leadership. He is the face of the current team - others will look to him.Fair point. Sure is a nice discussion to have.
That's comical, Vegas made us the favorite to win the national championship next season once Karaban said he's coming back.![]()
