To update: Syracuse put the beat down on Daemen, winning 90-50. It was clearly an unequal match from the start.
Last year Syracuse had a bad habit of starting off ice cold in Q1. No such troubles this game. I thought they had a fairly balanced scoring from outside, mid-range, and in the paint. You can definitely see the improvement in offensive play with this being year 3 of Coach Jack. It’s not elite, yet, but definitely improved. And they still have that scrappiness. But a lot of missed bunnies and some weak hands in the 1st half; could just be shaking off the rust. Defense was fine, though obviously it’s difficult to judge against this opponent. We will see how things evolve going forward.
There were some new faces I didn’t recognize. My seats were near the radio play caller and he mentioned that Coach Jack has the pull to bring P4 transfers — this was about sophomore (G) Velez, who came from LSU. She will make an impact. There is also grad student Varejão (C) from Michigan.
Freshmen Schmitt (G) and Scott (F) will also be ones to watch. Schmitt is only 5’5” but she was a starter for this game and showed confidence running the offense.
Woolley, a senior, did not play this game. I asked around but did not hear about any injuries or anything. She was on the bench in warmups. (I haven’t looked online for any info, so I don’t have any opinions. They probably didn’t feel she had to play, it was definitely a game for the underclassmen.)
Interesting note: there are 4 international players on this team and 3 are from Australia. Syracuse really has a pipeline to Aussie talent. I am curious to see how well they all gel together.
I think there is a lot of potential for Syracuse this year, even though they lost their dynamic scorer in Fair. But it will depend on how well they are able to keep improving throughout the year and maintain said balanced scoring and scrappiness.
Anyway that’s all I can remember off the top of my head. Probably a couple hundred showed up for the game.
