Ok, I've been watching the replay of the FSU-Duke game, and it has me in a nitpicking mood. I like Duke's roster, and Kara Lawson impresses me as an in-game coach. The puzzle for them is the PG position. It's a problem they have yet to solve. First, it was Day-Wilson and now it's Mair. How many times did I see Fournier or Thomas or Donovan do a simple pic-n-roll and Mair doesn't even look to make the obvious pass? Her first reaction is to look for her own shoot, and then loses the ball or gets blocked. It's a good thing she can run the transition offense or Duke would be nowhere. And Richardson makes up for a lot of missed opportunities. The book on them last season and this has been tough defense and awkward half-court offense. Well, if they had a decent PG, they wouldn't have to rely so heavily on their defense.
Kara has yet to get an elite point guard until this 25 class and Skinner. I think she takes the program to the next level.

Actually Mair has been way more than decent this semester. How many Duke games have you watched since Jan 1 ?

Exactly. The fact that you have to say this lets me know that there are too many people with bold opinions who don't know anything about the ACC.

No one is doubting Mair is a good player. But she’s not a PG that can take this team to a Final Four.

This was true last season. However, her play this year lets me know that if we don't make the Final Four, it likely won't be because of her. There are other, far more pressing concerns (lack of a true center, lack of consistent scoring in offense that is tied to COACHING) that will keep this year's team out of the Final Four.

Maybe 2 or 3. I didn’t say she was bad. I merely observed that standard plays in a half court offense seemed to elude her. She is good at transition offense, which happens to be Duke’s bread and butter.

Or, better yet, is she Olivia Miles, Hannah Hidalgo, or Ta'Niya Latson?
Mair played an ok game vs Hidalgo and while she was the high scorer for Duke with 15 points 2 assists 4 turnovers 0 steals, Duke lost by 15. Hidalgo had 19 points 4 assists 2 turnovers plus 3 steals. So while she isn't a Hidalgo she was at least in the direction of one.

Dog...you said if Duke had a decent PG

Indeed I did. That was sloppy of me. I was mainly trying to say what I noticed about Duke's offense, which seems to me to be limited by its PG play. To be perfectly clear, I think Mair is good in some aspects of the PG position, but not all of them. And the fact that Duke is so good at defense and transition, but not half-court offense is not an accident. It's a direct reflection of their guard play. Imagine how good this group could be if they could consistently run a pic-n-roll play, for example.

Interesting...The announcers for the Pitt-Virginia game mentioned that Lattimore has another year of eligibility remaining. First time I've heard anyone mention this is the case.

Had wondered if Miami had applied for a medical redshirt when she suffered her ACL but didn't see anything back then. Something to monitor. She could benefit from another year if she's looking to have a pro career somewhere.

I thought Stanford was showing some signs of life late in the season....nope, never mind. Getting thumped by Clemson in the ACC tourney.

I remember, when the season started and UVA was “introducing” their new players, they mentioned that she had 2 years of eligibility left.

I saw they were tied going into the 4th. Wish the Eagles coulda pulled it off.

Not Creme, but I saw somebody else had Virginia Tech projected as last 4 in. Getting thumped by Georgia Tech just now didn't help.

Some thoughts:

Cal is really impressive. Like--really impressive. They don't waste movements offensively. They take GOOD shots. They're well-coached and their athletic department's patience with Charmin Smith (something that I was hoping for last season when they played in the Pac-12) is clearly paying off. I like watching them play and will support them throughout their ACC/NCAA runs.

That brings me to the Gobblers. Oh boy. It's my hope that Virginia Tech's AD will be patient with Megan Duffy because the immediate future might not be all that kind to them. This year, I believe that Megan and her staff of former All-ACC players worked minor miracles getting that team into shape after what could've been a disastrous ACC season. Because of that moderate success, fans largely believe that they'll bounce back and become ACC title contenders/NCAA Final Four contenders again as early as next season (lol). However, I'm seeing a different picture. They are largely unathletic as a group. Samyha Suffren's return from injury will help, but there needs to be other dawgs in the kennel or else the team will not stay in the top half of the ACC. Mackie Nelson showed me a lot towards the end of the season, so maybe she can continue her progression into DAWGhood. They may have to hit the portal HARD to grab a few more dawgs (preferably from the SEC).

Klempsun-Louisville has the potential to be good. I want to see how Loyal McQueen (who I wish had stayed at Alabama--would've loved to see her on this year's squad) plays in that first quarter. If she's on from jump, Klempsun should do well--even if they don't ultimately pull the upset.

UNC should've lost. I was pulling for BC, obviously. I guess I'll have to root for FSU in tomorrow's game--my goodness.

Having a double-bye is great, but man--it does take some of the air out of the balloon when you're watching all these other teams compete and your teams are just sitting there--scouting. Duke (and South Carolina) FINALLY plays tomorrow night!
