Duke vs Virginia has an interesting Canadian plot for me. Lattimore vs Fournier. Two former Crestwood players who came into college with a lot of hype, Fournier moreso than Lattimore. But they were both had the same coaching while in HS. Going to be interesting.

I truly do not get the Kymora Johnson hype. Not only was Oluchi Okananwa the best guard on the floor today (Oluchi took 11 total shots, made 6 while Kymora MISSED 11 shots), Taina Mair had a better PG floor game (6 assists/0 turnovers vs. 6 assists/5 turnovers).

Help me out here, UVA fans.

I think Kymora is talented but truth be told im not impressed with Virginia's coaching. There is zero guidance or structure to anything they do

She's talented (has a nice 3-pointer, can create her own shot, and makes a nice dump-off pass), but I see her as a "good player on bad team" type. She wouldn't get heavy minutes on Final Four-type teams.

I do agree that Mox isn't doing her any favors with poor coaching. She's already on the short side. If she can't run an offense, she's got no shot at a WNBA career.

I've got Wake Forest on another screen. Do they do anything other than FOUL? I can see why they have zero Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins.

I agree, in part. Mo is definitely the best player on a mediocre team. She’s probably the only UVA player who could start for Duke. Your previous comment that Mair is a better point guard - I couldn’t disagree more. You correctly said she had 6 points, 6 assists and no turnovers. And Mo had 5 or 6 TOs today. But Mair shot 2-9 and was surrounded by way more talent than Mo. MO’s TO ratio is 5:3. Not great, but decent.
Re coach Mox… I’m not sure yet if she’s good or not. UVA kinda runs organized chaos and it can be pretty effective at times. But UVA can also look horrible at other times. I will say that she has completely changed the culture since replacing Tina T… who was awful.

People do not understand how challenging the task of a rebuild is when the previous coach allows a toxic culture to take hold; it permeates all parts of the teams including support staff and donors. It takes 3-4 yrs to just cleanup and start planting healthier seeds. I agree it is too soon to judge what coach Mox can/cannot do.

The bolded statement isn't quite true. Latasha Lattimore would start for this year's Duke team--largely because we are bereft of height and shot-blocking ability. Her former teammate (Shayeann Day-Wilson) started for Duke under Kara as a diminutive PG.

Mair isn't as talented a player as Johnson, but she did have a better PG floor game (which is what I said in my original post). Six assists to zero turnovers is a lot better than six assists and five turnovers, wouldn't you agree? Mair did not shoot well, but she did not take bad shots like Johnson did. And yes, I'm aware that Duke has more talented players on paper (I would argue that Kara isn't doing a great job of getting the best out of them). But UVA is not Boston College. There is some talent on that team (Johnson being one of them). It's largely being poorly coached--by Mox. For example, Paris Clark is an unmitigated disaster in her junior year. With better coaching (e.g., a more defined role), she could be a decent piece for a good team.

If being better than Tina Thompson is the benchmark, then this program is doomed. Why was Debbie Ryan fired...er...retired if the best UVA can come up with 15 seasons later is this mess? Boyle, Thompson, and Mox--strikes 1, 2, and 3. Why is this acceptable to UVA fans?

The previous coach shouldn't have been hired, just like this coach shouldn't have been (and neither should Boyle, IMO). UVA has struck out three times since they let Debbie Ryan go.

Today's Wake Forest/Virginia Tech sums up what I was saying regarding Carleigh Wenzel. She followed up a masterpiece against a good Georgia Tech team with a meh showing against a terrible Wake Forest team. The Hokies need her to have more consistent [good] performances if they want to maximize their potential this year. She's got to develop her mental game along with the physical game.

I respectfully disagree. Latimore wouldn’t start for Duke, height or not. She has terrible hands and sometimes just checks out of games (see UVA vs ND). She also dribbles way too much for a big with lousy handles. I’m a season ticket holder, so I likely have seen way more of her than you have.

I do agree that six assists and zero TOs is better than what Mo did today. But today’s game wasn’t a typical Mo performance. I hope you give some credit to your team for playing excellent defense.

As far as UVA’s coaching history, I can’t really speak to Debbie’s history. I only moved to Charlottesville 10 years ago and that was toward the end of her career. UVA was certainly heading in the wrong direction (3 NCAA tourneys in 6 years - but I’d certainly take that now). What I was saying about Thompson was that she left us with a horrible culture. Mox has certainly turned that around. Yes, Clark hasn’t progressed well. On the other hand, McGee definitely has. I’m hoping that Mox is a keeper, but I certainly have doubts on that score.

And no, UVA fans (at least this one) don’t accept the post Debbie years. Boyle was ok, Tina a disaster, Mox??? As a life long UConn fan I do know what good/great looks like. UVA ain’t there!

Thanks for your insights. My son is a Duke grad, so I do have some routing interest in them.

This is so huge. Especially considering what had happened there during Thompson's time there. And after cleaning things up, there still is rebuilding the program to how Coach Mox wants it to be. With the huge investment in NIL that the program received from Ohanian, she deserves the time to make it her own program.

Point well taken re Lattimore! I'm concerned about Duke's lack of height and rim protection this season, but it won't be a huge problem until the NCAA Tournament. Still, having athletic length could've helped us this season.

We had a solid game plan for Kymora, but we can say the same thing about other P4 teams against her. She typically hasn't done well against P4 teams this season, Clemson and Wake games notwithstanding. I do think that this is more of a Mox issue than a Kymora issue, however.

Thank you for your thoughts on UVA's recent coaching history. The two ADs (Littlepage and Williams) involved in those three HC hires aren't scrutinized nearly enough when it comes to evaluations of the current state of UVA women's basketball, and I'm not sure how much Alexis's largesse will offset the damage that has been brewing since 2011. They should be NCAA-bound at some point, but I'm not seeing much of a title threat even with that infusion of cash.

That's awesome re your son!

#17 Georgia Tech visits #3 Thursday the 16th but I've heard that unfortunately Dani Carnegie won't be able to play for Tech but Hannah Hidalgo will be able to play after sitting out nursing a sore ankle in the win over Clemson.

Haven't heard what the Carnegie injury is???

ND started Westbeld for the first time since she returned from injury she had 20 points. Citron lead all scorers along with Tech's Dunn. Irish out rebounded Tech 50 to 25, King had 12, which made up for their turnovers.

Irish remain undefeated in ACC play 6-0 they shot 54.8% field goals and 46.2% from three.

Tech made a few runs at ND who were playing without Hidalgo but ND took control in the fourth to win 81-66.

Next SMU visits Notre Dame and we're all wondering when Hidalgo will be fully healed?

Duke has made Cal completely uncomfortable for 3 quarters. Haven’t watched Cal much this season, but they haven’t seen to be able to get in rhythm tonight.

They may struggle more than they should (given their record and team composition) on these East Coast trips.

I still think they're a good team, but I'm not buying the Top 16 NCAA seed talk.

Elsewhere, Virginia Tech is trying to sink their NCAA chances with a loss to lowly UVA tonight. They made Latasha Lattimore look like A'ja Wilson.
