ONE starter is returning from last year (Kia). There are 5 freshmen and sophomores who've never been the focus of the defense or asked to contribute as much as they'll be needed this year. The juniors - Kia, Gabby, and Natalie, are still struggling a bit to step up and need to find their balance as team leaders and play makers. Big kudos to Saniya on her game at FSU - she played like a UConn senior, my highest praise. Keep it up, kiddo.

Gabby struggled a bit.
Kia struggled a bit is an understatement. Expectations are higher for a returning starter who is also an Olympian.
Did Natalie struggle a bit? Or did she find the level at which she will be playing rest of the season?
Will they step up or hit the junior wall?
Hopefully I will find the answers today.

For those who have an interest, Uconn is a 14.5 point favorite tonight against Baylor. This does seem to be out of
whack to me. I would expect a good game tonight. GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!
I agree that it's completely out of whack. Sometimes bookies do this to attract betting on the other side, I think. Of course if UConn did manage to win by 14, Kim would never schedule UConn again....

All we'll find out tonight is the current state of the team. Projecting an entire season on such a small sample seems illogical to me.

Correct.
I should have said:
Hopefully the next few games will give us an indication how long the season is going to be.

So, the FSU game was exciting, huh? I know some people are unhappy with the fact the Huskies struggled for much of the game. I'd like to remind folks that this team is very different from last year's and Geno is relying on some very young women to be key players. A reminder about the roster:

10 Molly Bent 5-9 Guard FR/FR Centerville, Mass.
51 Natalie Butler 6-5 Center SR/JR Fairfax Station, Va.
12 Saniya Chong 5-8 Guard SR/SR Ossining, N.Y.
24 Napheesa Collier 6-1 Forward SO/SO O'Fallon, Missouri
5 Crystal Dangerfield 5-5 Guard FR/FR Murfreesboro, Tenn.
25 Kyla Irwin 6-2 Forward FR/FR State College, Penn.
20 Tierney Lawlor 5-7 Guard SR/SR Ansonia, Conn.
11 Kia Nurse 6-0 Guard JR/JR Hamilton, Ontario
33 Katie Lou Samuelson 6-3 Guard/Forward SO/SO Huntington Beach, Calif.
15 Gabby Williams 5-11 Guard JR/JR Sparks, Nev.
23 Azurá Stevens 6-6 Forward/Guard JR/JR Raleigh, N.C. - sitting out this year due to NCAA transfer rules
32 Batouly Camara 6-2 Forward SO/SO New York, N.Y. - sitting out, same reason

Anyway, the point of my post is to remind posters that this is a young team in an unfamiliar conformation. Players are being asked to do things they've never had to do before. During games, I understand expressing frustration with goofy turnovers or boneheaded fouls but, please, don't turn your frustration into personal insults of the players. Criticizing the play is always OK; criticizing the human being is way out of line.

Criticism is fine, but there are a handful of posters who've taken it on themselves to beat the drum of negativity of one player over and over again. These people rarely post, and when they do I already know what their posts say before even clicking on the link. Technically, these posts criticize player but really, they are just spontaneous rants against a single player. These posters may have noticed their posts disappearing. If they just get up one morning and decides to rant against the same player, their posts will continue to disappear.

Thanks everyone for the mostly even-handed response to the game at FSU. Not saying this as a mod, but as a fan, please try to continue to be patient. I have a feeling it will be worth it in the long run.

False advertsing: this was more than "a" word. ;)

I'm frankly embarrassed that you felt the need to remind us to act like adults. Believe me, point taken.

They were fine. Will they get better? Of course, but it was a road win against a top 15 team. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

I wouldn't call them a top 15 team without Leticia Romero. They don't have the type of depth that can fill that void. UConn showed good mental toughness in wrangling back the lead and holding on. That's a good intangible to have that type of fight and not giving up.

Are you sure that wasn't the line from the last time they played? I would think that the game odds would have been even or Baylor by 4-5 points at worst............I have zero idea how to figure this game out but based on their sheer physicality and good bench, I would have to give the edge to Baylor..................certainly would love to be 100% wrong as I sometimes am................................

Sounds crazy. But here's another betting site that has UCONN as a 13-point favorite. What are they smoking? Live Lines, Live Odds, NFL lines, College Football lines, NBA lines, College basketball lines, MLB lines, Basesball Lines provided by Islandcasino

Wow. I was (and, am) hoping we stay within 15.
Clearly they're smoking last years blunts. I will be happy with these young ladies playing hard and keeping it close until the 4th. If so, then they've got a chance. In order for this to happen Kia and KLS need to have far better games this time while all others need to play equally as well as last game. If Danger has a major break out game and all is as I've stated, they may win. They'll need to cut their turnovers by 2/3rds and fight for every rebound. That still may not be enough. Watch for Kayla to finally get off the bench tonight. Go Husky's.

Look this is a good test. They will have to play much better not to get blown out, IMO. This season will a journey. As I've said before, UConn's reputation is built on winning in March, not November. Take it one game at a time and enjoy the ride.

Now sure who's line it is, bags, but one thing I'am sure of, Las Vegas odds makers don't do whacky. They're pretty serious folks. Heck, they might even have some money riding on it.

Wow - I think the OP breaks the record for the most 'likes' all-time. Obviously hit a strong vein of decency amongst the posting community - how very odd!:eek::cool:

My personal least favorite but frequently repeated post: some variation of 'Chong can't play defense' while the reality is she has been playing fairly decent defense for the past two years. It gets repeated whenever her player scores, and ignores the fact that D1 players do occasionally score against Uconn.

Only in daylight hours.

After dark I switch to night crullers.

Try a lobster roll. Lobster rolls are nice. Eat one for me too, we can't get them down thisaway.
