No starting pitching again, no hitting for the first half of the game and two inexcusable plays. Padilla getting picked off down 4 is absolutely inexcusable. While it was a weird play, with Huber starting to chase the runner towards second the moment he threw home it was Sears job to stop moving towards first and run home.

Oh, and Tammaro is hitting roughly .200 points better than Simmons At some point in a game that is as easy to measure statistically as baseball it doesn’t matter who won a job in practice and who the coaches think are better. Production has to play.

The pick off move where no one covered home plate was one of the dumbest baseball plays of the season. They showed fight. But they needed to show good baseball. Seems a little late in the season to be figuring stuff out.

If I heard correctly he said, "We can't run him back out there to start next time out". Then I think he caught himself and hedged a bit. It's at the point now where if they keep sending these guys out there it's almost moot. Just can't win games consistently against good teams if your starters can't get through inning 3/4. You're not going to go where you want to go. At present just rely on hope and catch lightening in a bottle and that won't cut it.
 
My problem with Sears was in the 1st inning. Instead of buckling down and picking up the team for the botched run down, he got behind and then served a get me over pitch instead of attacking and turned what should have been no runs or 1 run into a 3 run inning.

First time UConn has lost 2 games in a row this season. That is not bad for the sport of baseball.

OK - but vs. Butler and Creighton? These are bad losses any way you look at it...
Neither team is exactly top shelf talent (Creighton is 122 and Butler is 225 in RPI.). But, let's face the BE is weak in Baseball and is really only good in BB.

We have to see better pitcher management. But, we have one of the best coaches in America - he get it straight.
I hope this isn't our last trip to Omaha this year, but without winning this series, it might be...
(I didn't think Mr. Hyde would make the trip to Omaha, but there he is...)
 
Sears has a lot of moving pieces in his delivery and it seems like he has trouble repeating his mechanics consistently. His stuff is excellent but the consistency hasn't been enough yet to produce the results he needs.

To me an RPI of 122 is not bad at all. Creighton is not a bad team. If UConn wins the next 2 games in this road series, UConn's RPI will probably bounce up again.

RPI's of 200+ are another matter. Still, UConn took the Butler series. Like I've said many times before, while I was certainly hoping for a sweep over Butler, sweeps in baseball are tough to achieve. It is hardly uncommon to for a good team in baseball to lose games to a lesser team.

While Sears overall did not have a good game again, I do want to comment about the pitchers out of the bullpen. Sullivan and Quinn have not exactly gotten a lot of mound time of late, and have not exactly been main stays out of the bullpen this season. However, they both did well out of the bullpen yesterday. It's possible that if they both do well in other mound appearances, it could increase the confidence that the coaching staff has in them. Having a couple more arms to go to on this pitching staff would certainly be a good thing.

Simmons is UConn's best defensive outfielder, so if UConn has the lead late in the game, it would not be a surprise to see Simmons come in as a defensive replacement. Of course, we'll see what happens.

Already the little things, Tammaro has to get to second on that wild pitch. Then he doesn't get forced on the fly ball that drops. And then Huber gets punched out on another pitch that appeared to be off the plate.

First time in a while that we’ve held the opponent scoreless in the first. i appreciate Quigley.

Yup, I heard it, wasn't quite sure how to write it up, since there is no obvious candidate at this point on who might replace Sears. Think we'll have to see how things proceed this weekend, and even then, who knows.
 
I sure do miss the coverage from FS1. These camera angles and homer announcers are awful.
