30 for 30 Requiem for the Big East March 16

It's dedicated to the time before we dominated the league. For some reason.

Yeah something tells me the seven-time tournament champions are not going to play a huge role in this story, because the media universe is under the impression that the Big East disbanded around 1988 for some reason.

How convenient of the ESPN Syracuse execs to focus on the 80's and exclude the best program in Big East history. I have better things to do with my time than watch that garbage.

The director apparently was/is a rabid Georgetown fan.

What else should we expect from Syracuse Newhouse filled ESPN?

and so the story will be told from the narrow perspective of a rabid GTown fan who misses the Ewing era. I actually hope ESPN is successful in burying the Big East, no reason for UCONN fans to care anymore, less recruiting competition for us if they succeed.

Ezra Edelman is from DC - I think his father works for Georgetown, but I know his mom founded the Children's Defense Fund. His docs are generally excellent, but obviously, this one is not telling the story past the mid-80s.

Oh, and ESPN's executive producer, John Dahl, is a UNC guy.

Yea his dad is a law professor at Georgetown.

Kind of unrelated but how hilarious is it that basically every ACC Big Monday game has been a complete dud outside of Pitt-Cuse. Basically every Big Monday game in the Big East was between two ranked (or at least tournament) teams...

Georgetown made one Final 8 between 1989 and 2007. That's astounding.
18 years. 1 Final 8.

The Pitt-Cuse game was actually a Wednesday game, so yeah, there have been like no good Big Monday games, though I guess Duke-Virginia was good.

Or, put another way, "Rhode Island".

It would be completely appropriate for someday 30 for 30 or ESPN Films to make a 2011 UConn film. The hero-Kemba, the old mastermind going for 1 more-Calhoun, the rest of the squad- young and inexperienced, the season- not going as fans would have hoped....then boom. 5 games in 5 days and then the mesmerizing tourney run. That was one of the most special seasons in college basketball or college sports history. It would be a great watch and a great documentary. Give em a few more years, I suppose.

I got free tix for the Pitt/NCState game tonight, heretofore to be known as the "TJ Warren Show". It was an impressive performance because honestly, NC State is not that good. Pretty much everyone else threw up garbage, they have a midget PG and a backup center who makes Charles Barkley look like the "after" picture in a NutriSystems ad.

Fwiw, if you'd like to feel sorry for me, the major sports station here promoted their Syracuse grad to basketball analyst. He does the pre and post-game shows in addition to replacing the only morning guy who could talk baseball. Whiny, snively, arrogant and stupid all rolled into one.

Here's an idea for a 30-for-30.
How Jim and Geno turned a school on a farm into the college basketball center of the universe.

Or we could have a 30-for-30 that focuses on an period of time in the Big East where the best coach in its history wasn't even there yet or was just getting his feet wet in the conference.

Oh well. Maybe we'll have to wait for that UConn channel to get up and running for the former.

Those teams were the Big East early, UConn WAS the Big East from 90 on, carried the banner most of the time while the "big guys of the 80's" squandered in mediocrity in the NCAA tourney, many with early exits!!

This is ridiculous and should not be aired by any management with intelligence on the topic…...

For that entire decade, the best 2 teams in any year was UConn and someone else.
