OT: 3 Club Golf Tourney--what are you bringing?

Woods are a waste. Even on a Par 5 and all Par 4s under 350 yds you are never more than 2 long irons from the green.

Distance isn't the issue, it's carry over hazards and out of the rough until you get within 150. Then you need at least 2 options to get close enough to chip/putt.

Putters aren't making difference as stated, unless you're the groundskeeper.

Week 1 is done.

Recommendations for the next course? We have guys in Windham, Canton, Vernon and Southington. So kind of anywhere near or in between those would work.

3 wood, 6 iron, 50 degree.

I’ll putt with the 6 iron, believe it or not. Just open the club face and use the bottom. I’ll use a 3 wood at times as well.

I’ve done this type of challenge before, always fun.

What were the results? Curious what clubs the best score brought

Take a bogey :)

That isn't a bad strategy. I think too many people in this thread think their opponents will have a perfect 3 club setup and be shooting par.

For a 3 club tourney take your normal score and add 6-8 strokes to it. And your opponents will be doing the same.

3 five irons. 5 iron, 7 iron, putter.

Okay. Well inside 150 you’ll have limited touch with a 7 iron and landing on greens. It will be tough if you’re in a trap. And you’ll probably average 2+ putts a green since you won’t be close to the hole without a wedge. No? Looks like 3 five irons, 2 sevens to get on and a 2 putt?

If in a trap or have a force carry over a trap around the green, pretty much screwed.

Driver, 7, putter.

That's what I did except witg a 5 wood that I use as a driver 80% of the time. Partly because I am just so comfortable with the 7i I feel like I could do anything

Finished 36 in Fri/Sat event for FIL.

A few tried putting with drivers (not during) and acquitted themselves well. I was iffy.

Best feeling for me was to play in my FIL’s crew and on several (but not enough) holes arrived on the green with them each for par 3-6 feet away.

The after party for him was amazing, hysterical, first time the group invited all spouses.

I responded to this but it got lost somehow.

I was out practicing a week ago or so and did three experiments on the putting green.

First up, Taylor Made rsi2 PW. Made 7 out of 10 and all 10 were right on line.
Next up, PXG 0311 54-degree. Five out of ten and it took 3 or 4 putts to get a feel for it.
Finally, PXG 58-degree. 6 out of 10 but lipped out two of them.

Out of the three the PW felt most like the putter for weight and feel. 54 degree was blasting putts like I shot them out of a cannon. 58 degree was fine.

Usually I have a 56 or 60 in my hand when it happens. I drained a 12 footer the other day while my caddie was on his way with the putter. I'm pretty comfortable with it. I do it a bunch because I play a lot of solo golf - so easier than running back to the cart if I don't have my putter with me. Just laziness. If I'm in a place where I know I'm going to 2 putt but it is also unlikely I'm going to make it - going back to the cart just burns time. Unless it is very short I will always go back to get the putter for birdie putts.

Honestly, would be less concerned with 5 feet in than lag putting. The harder you have to swing your non-putter, the more likely you are to end up way outside of 5 feet. Some potentially mitigated by putting with a wood/hybrid, but that hot face adds a whole new challenge, especially if you’re switching back and forth between clubs for putts.

Agreed - it works ok when you are on a course with fast, smooth greens that are rolling. Also much better on downhill putts where you just have to get it started in the right direction. Wouldn't do it for a long uphill putt.

5h, 7i, P. I would consider dropping the putter for maybe a sand wedge and just putt with the 5h though.
If I had a 4h in my bag, I'd use that instead of the 5h.

Shot exactly a 99 last weekend. I can't imagine breaking 100 today but I'll do it for the yard

And what clubs did you use?

Are you allowed to change up the clubs for today's round?

I'm too lazy to run through this thread to see if these questions have been asked and answered.

I used a 5 wood, 7 iron and a putter.

Unclear if we can change clubs. No one has asked lol

That round I managed to avoid. Today was a disaster and I managed to hit 3 bunkers. Didn't even add my score. Must've been over 120.

Maybe I missed it - but what do you shoot with a full set of clubs?

No doubt doing this would add strokes to your round, but I wouldn't think more than 1 a hole on average - just due to distance if you aren't bringing a driver.

This entirely depends on my sobriety. I pretty much always shoot sub-100. Occasionally break 90 if it's a course I know well.

So far in this challenge I've added about 9 strokes to an average game when I avoid sand or some deep rough. I can basically use my 7i as anything from a 5i to a GW passably if I really focus. Just doesn't quite have the pop to get out of trouble.

There is something to learn from your game. You know your 7-iron is no good in the sand or deep rough. You have to learn and figure out how to avoid those areas at all cost. And that is a good strategy when you go back to your full bag. Identify the most severe hazards on a hole and make sure no matter what, you don't hit in to them. Start getting really good at that and you can start aiming towards targets.

So, play to your most negative thoughts? JK, it works better if you're more positive.

I'd much prefer to get drunk and smash my driver as hard as I can two fairways over, thank you very much
