Top 9th, UConn puts runners on the corners, but a line out double play ends the game. 6-2 URI.

->URI head man Raphael Cerrato answered that another way. “This was an indication as to what we are capable of,” Cerrato said. “I mean, we really have struggled in just about every area this year. We’re hurting. We haven’t pitched like we are capable. We haven’t hit like we’re capable. We’re just now starting to play better defense.”

Saturday, his team looked more than fine, taking the fight to the Huskies and being aggressive at the plate. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that starting pitcher Domenic Picone easily put together his best performance of the season, going 7.0 innings and giving up just four hits and two runs, while also mowing down 11 strikeouts without a single walk. Keep in mind that Picone came into this game with an 0-3 record and an ERA up at 9.03.

“His numbers don’t show it but he pitched really good against Tennessee and really good against Auburn,” Cerrato said. “He just ended up having one bad inning and it blew everything up for him. I mean, I think he had seven strikeouts in four innings against Tennessee and that’s a team that could win the national championship. So he’s very capable.” <-

-> “We’re off to a good start but you can’t stub your toe like we did today,” Penders said. “We have a lot of respect for their (URI) coaching staff and we know they’ve had some tough games and some bad breaks. So we knew they would be tough today and they beat us. It wasn’t a case of us beating ourselves.” <-

Korey Morton continues getting starts in right field behind Enzo Stefanoni. I think Ben Huber has started every game at 1B, he is the only Husky to start every game so far at the same position.

Also, as Padilla continues to get starts at SS, it would certainly help if his defense were to tighten up. His rise to starting status has helped keep Chris Brown on the bench after his bad start to the season on both offense and defense. Brown has shown some signs recently of emerging from the slump. However, as mentioned before, I suspect one of the reasons Padilla keeps getting starts is to move Bushling off the shortstop position. They want to keep Bushling in the lineup, so he often ends up playing 3B, which helps to take potential playing time away from Brown.

I really don’t like flotv. Why don’t we have more games on ESPN?

Bottom 1st, a scoreless inning for the UConn offense after a 1 out infield single for Stock.

Top 2nd, Stefanoni gives up 2 singles, but has a scoreless inning, aided by Donlan throwing out a base stealer. No score.

Top 3rd, URI with runners on the corners with 1 out, an rbi ground out ties the game at 1.
