URI entered Saturday just 2-18, then knocked off No. 25 UConn in one of the most surprising results of the season. And our Eric Sorenson was there.

->URI head man Raphael Cerrato answered that another way. “This was an indication as to what we are capable of,” Cerrato said. “I mean, we really have struggled in just about every area this year. We’re hurting. We haven’t pitched like we are capable. We haven’t hit like we’re capable. We’re just now starting to play better defense.”
Saturday, his team looked more than fine, taking the fight to the Huskies and being aggressive at the plate. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that starting pitcher Domenic Picone easily put together his best performance of the season, going 7.0 innings and giving up just four hits and two runs, while also mowing down 11 strikeouts without a single walk. Keep in mind that Picone came into this game with an 0-3 record and an ERA up at 9.03.
“His numbers don’t show it but he pitched really good against Tennessee and really good against Auburn,” Cerrato said. “He just ended up having one bad inning and it blew everything up for him. I mean, I think he had seven strikeouts in four innings against Tennessee and that’s a team that could win the national championship. So he’s very capable.” <-
-> “We’re off to a good start but you can’t stub your toe like we did today,” Penders said. “We have a lot of respect for their (URI) coaching staff and we know they’ve had some tough games and some bad breaks. So we knew they would be tough today and they beat us. It wasn’t a case of us beating ourselves.” <-
