Isn’t Stonehill Division 2 until this upcoming year?

Holy Cross has one national title, two final fours, and four sweet sixteens. Providence has zero national titles, two final fours, and six sweet sixteens. UConn has four national titles, five final fours, and seventeen sweet sixteens. Yes, we are new money but our money is more than those had combined.

Great topic. I look forward to the debate. Quick question: would Holy Cross be ahead of us in football?

Quinnipiacs latest success in hockey may allow them to jump up the list a bit. Other than that the only thing that sticks out for me is Dartmouth, why? I ask that seriously as if I may be missing something.

I should have clarified: this is for basketball. Dartmouth has two final four appearances.

And their old money has severely deflated.

This is how I would have it

1. UConn
Record: 1771-1005 638 W-L%
Avg Record 15-8.5
Seasons: 119 (1900-01 to 2021-22)

2. PC
Record: 1294-817 613 W-L%
Avg record: 18-11
Seasons: 73 (1928-29 to 2021-22). The school did not play basketball from 1936-1948

3. Holy Cross
Record: 1429-1056 575 W-L%
Avg Record 14-10
Seasons: 102 (1900-01 to 2021-22)

I dunno - in my book you'd have to weigh level of competition and so I'd say Holy Cross would fall out of my top 3 seeing that they've been leveled down for ~ 50 years.

Dartmouth made it during the early 40s - the war years
But back in the 40s and 50s the NCAA was the secondary tournament to the NIT

Holy Cross "won" their championship and Final Fours in 8 team fields 75 years ago. They don't deserve to be #2 over PC

I would rate UMass higher than Dartmouth based on number of tournament participations

Maybe they get extra credit because Bob Cousy went there ;)

I love UConn basketball but I don't see how you can put them above Providence or Holy Cross historically.

Huh?

UMass- Dr. J, Calipari, Camby, Travieso, Bruiser Flint, Jeff Viggiano...

BCU? Aren’t they a southern team, because I’m pretty sure they play in a southern conference.

As much as this is troll bait for BC and PC, if you are going to do this right you need to weight the 64 team era more than the peach basket era. Other possible cut offs are the Lew Alcindor era or the Magic/Bird era.

Truth is before then, CBB wasn't a national sport and before Wooden's UCLA teams CBB didn't really exist at all.

UMass- Dr. J, Calipari, Camby, Travieso, Bruiser Flint, Jeff Viggiano...
I’ll give you that Dr J was a great player. Camby ok was very good. Calipari cheated his butt off and was and still is a mediocre coach that only succeeds because he can recruit top talent with BS. Travieso and Viggiano? Neither would have started for us. And Bruiser is the UMass version of KO, but without the ring. Not sure if you are serious with this post. Hope not

I don't get what's so historic about Providence? They had a nice little run in the '60s.

NCAA tournament results[edit]

The Minutemen have appeared in the NCAA tournament nine times. Their combined record is 11–9. Their 1996 victories have been vacated by the NCAA thus their official tournament record is 7–8.

Only one appearance, 1962, before Cal, and 3 after Cal.

Without even talking about players, their coaches in historical terms were pretty good. Mullaney, Gavitt, Pitino, Rick Barnes, Pete Gillen, Tim Welsh. That being said, not much to show for all that coaching talent.
