2027 Recruiting: Haylen Ayers

Mostly correct. Most often a two sport athlete will have a full scholarship for their primary sport and be counted as a preferred walk-on for the other. Although at a smaller or more financially challenged school they may go with a partial scholarship for each sport. That way the two programs can spread their available money around better.
'
The rule has changed. Scholarship/roster spot counts against both sports now.

Bit with the new roster spots available under the House Settlement it won’t really matter much anymore

Top 5 so early makes me think she knows her business. Early prediction - Texas if she is going to double sport, UConn if she wants to focus on basketball

Wouldn’t count out Kentucky as a dual sport. Their softball team pretty much stays in the top 25!

Haylen Ayers is rated #1 in the 2027 class by Blue Star Basketball.

Ayers does not play for the Philly Rise or any AAU team associated with Mike Flynn or Blue Star. She plays AAU for the Tennessee Flight Silver (EYBL).

I like Ayers a lot. However, any 2027 ranking that doesn't have Ivanna Wilson-Manyacka in the top 2 let alone the top 10 is a joke.

Blue Star has Wilson-Manyacka ranked #22 for 2027.

Mike Flynn has been in the high school ranking and AA selection game longer than anyone else—since 1976. He's long been on the McD AA and Gatorade POY committees, along with other staff members of Blue Star.

None of that means anyone has to agree with his rankings. He famously ranked Angel McCoughtry 97th in the high school class of 2004. He admitted to me that that was because he had never actually seen her, assuming he had even heard of her, which he couldn't recall.

I would assume he or his Blue Star staff have seen Wilson-Manyacka. Their ranking of her does seem puzzling, but that doesn't necessarily mean his other rankings are a joke. Ayers, for example, who is the topic of this thread, seems to belong near the top of the 2027 list according to many sources.

I have no idea how involved Flynn still is with traveling and scouting but he certainly has a lot of influence with whatever staff is making these rankings, Chris Lawlor seems to be leading that. Regardless, anyone who knows what they're seeing and has seen Wilson-Manyacka play knows how ridiculous having her at #22 is. That's why, because of the subjectiveness and biases involved, I don't take rankings seriously at all. And it's why the best and smartest college coaches do their own. Regarding Ayers, as post #17 of this thread shows, I have a very high opinion of her and certainly hope she winds up at UConn because she's smooth as silk and highly competitive. However, I believe there's a very small chance of that happening.

This would make her second (confirmed) unofficial. Let’s hope she’s saving her official for First Night next season as a commit.
Yes, second trip on her own dime in just over 3 months has to be a good sign of serious interest. And she can't be too impressed with that collection of undisciplined, rec league talent at close to home Tennessee.
