2027 Recruiting: Haylen Ayers

Look at who are teaming up together, Haylen Ayers, Eve Long, Micah Ojo and Kaleena Smith.

“Haylen Ayers is a versatile 6’0” guard in the Class of 2027 who brings size, athleticism, and a strong two-way presence to the perimeter. She plays with confidence, shows the ability to handle and create in the open floor, and can impact the game as both a scorer and off ball mover. Ayers competes with energy, uses her length effectively, and continues to develop into a dynamic guard with high-level upside.”

Would be nice to put together 10 views of Ayers getting into and taking those mid range Js and put them on a video loop for Quinonez to watch a couple times a day. Owning that skill could make BQ an AA.
Would be a nice add to her game but I think the only thing stopping from being AA is playing time...

Some good breakdown (even if seemingly delivered by an ai voice).
My only quibble is that the author seems not to be aware of UCONN'S success in softball as another possible selling point for her.
Softball won't have anything to do with her decision. However, it looks like location, family connection, and especially Shea Ralph will have a lot to do with it.

The Big East is not all that good at softball.

The SEC has 12 teams. The ACC has 8. The B1G and Big 12 have 7. The Sunbelt has 3. The Southland has 2.

The Big East has 1 bid that went to the 2nd place team (meaning the top seed wasn't good enough to get in without an auto-qualifier. Fairfield women's basketball can sometimes get in without an auto-qualifier.

Yes she is. She can obviously really coach but what stands out to me is how she communicates and motivates. You can tell her players really enjoy playing for her. I’m not confident that Auriemma is going to be able to pull Ayers out of there.
Such lack of faith. This is the type of player that Geno is good at landing with some level of consistency.

Vandy and a mother that used to go there does make it a less clear path, but KLS had a sister actually playing at Stanford.

When it comes to recruiting you can have all the faith you want but it won't make any difference. A lot of folks on here had a lot of faith that GA was going to get Aaliyah Boston, remember that done deal? 😉

I think Dawn caught him napping on that one -- but normal recruiting rules with UConn do not apply to centers.

Geno also struggles with certain guards that don't like to pass, but that is another story.

1) Auriemma wasn't napping, he was on top of it. Boston came for her official visit in Nov. of 2018 and said everything was great. And three days later she committed to SC for the "culture and support". Not much GA could do with that.
2) I don't think GA struggles with those certain guards. He just doesn't bother recruiting them.

We can agree to disagree on Boston.

But IIRC, Geno wanted the ND guards. He worked hard for Ogunbowale in particular.

My personal observation is that Geno doesn't work any harder than he has to when it comes to recruiting. If he is flying to see a player like Ayers it is because he thinks the full court press will get the job done. So I see her as a UConn lean, but the hometown school is always going to be a threat so it isn't in the bag even if the normal pressures aren't there in this case.

1) There's nothing to disagree on with Boston. Everyone except Boston, her parents, and Staley thought she was going to UConn. What could he have done other than surprise her with that Caribbean style dinner? She wanted Staley's "culture".
2) Which guards? He didn't recruit Citron and Hidalgo. And he didn't work too hard on AO. He initially recruited her up until the summer before her HS senior year. At that point she disengaged from UConn by leaving them off her final 5 list. No further work needed or done by GA. He works plenty hard for the players he wants and flies to see all of the kids he recruits because he evaluates all of them in person before he offers them a scholarship. And then he follows up with home visits for the top priorities.

To your point, Geno has visited Ivanna, Haylen and Eve long practices or games. I am not sure if he has visited anyone else.

Yes, he not only flies around the country for those individual events but he also flies to all the summer circuit tournaments to evaluate many potential recruits. At his age he still recruits as actively as any of the top coaches in the country.

Amazing commitment and that is why he is the most successful coach in the history of the game. I love his dedication and determination to see our Huskies be the best team it can be.
