2026 Transfer portal

I'm about done following college sports. The transfer portal and paying players to play basketball are about to ruin it; no more loyalty to a program...and no more being able to follow a player for their entire college career as they improve while playing for your favorite school.

It's a free-for-all now where, for most players, it's all about money.

It wasn't so long ago that a full scholarship was the way; those of us not talented in athletics had to pay our way to earn a college degree. Now, players want not only a free ride to college, but to be paid on top of that. And with all this moving about in the portal, I wonder how important academics really are anymore. That seems to be way down the priority list. It's all about "me...me...me" and it is disgusting.

Ok..off soapbox now.

Wow major blow for Texas. I know they have wings coming in but Crump is a stud and will be one of the most coveted transfers this cycle.

Her finalists were Texas, Duke, and Ohio State. I could see her fitting in well at at either program. Duke graduates Ashlon Jackson and Ohio State loses Chance Gray, Crump would fit in well replacing either of those 2.

I wouldn't be shocked if programs like UCONN, UCLA or Vanderbilt make a push for her. She'll thrive a program that prioritizes perimeter shooting and spacing the floor on offense.

I wondered when/where.

She followed coach Laura Dinkins from Grand Canyon and was a bucket at NAU.

I think she could be a dominant guard up to mid-major but I'm not sure about P4

Tennessee is a train wreck…4 graduating seniors, all 8 potential returnees go into the transfer portal and their number 1 incoming recruit (O. Edwards) has asked for a release from her signed commitment.

How does Kim Caldwell even keep her job?

What would happen if the WNBA was like the NWSL and let younger players under 18 into the league if they had the talent? I imagine the portal might change a tad, no?

The VAST majority of these players aren’t WNBA material. Even those who get drafted might not ever play. I see a lot role and essentially practice players looking for some of that market share money.

I would not be surprised if there’s a change this summer to slow this transfer train down. You can’t deny a student from changing institutions. But, I would consider taxing a year (or possibly a number of games) of eligibility for every transfer, including coaching changes. Something has to be done. This is RAYdiculous!
My suggestions would be:

Allow players to transfer twice without penalty.

Exceptions. Coaching change, grad student, a medical situation involving a family member where the player wants to play "closer to home".

Any other transfers, the player has to sit out an entire season.

I would also consider granting grad students who transferred zero times in their career a fifth season of elgibility, and they can transfer to another school for that extra year.

I don’t think Jada ever received an offer from Cori. Instead she posted a bunch of videos that seemed designed to induce an offer. When it didn’t materialize, she followed her ha friend Breya Cunningham to Arizona. When that was nolises it was off to ISU.
Williams committed to UCLA in March 2021 and decommitted to go to Arizona in Aug. 2022.

What the heck is going on at Texas? Really surprised to see Coach Vic lose such quality players.........
I literally was going to make a post about her leaving but didn't want to speculate. She's really good. She's had big time games in the tournament and against big time schools. For her to only average 19 minutes a game and only play 14 in the final 4, that's got to be tough. But I thought she fit there and with Oldacre and Judd leaving I thought there were front court minutes available.

Agreed, really good player. She scored 7 straight in the 3rd quarter to bring Texas within 1 against UCLA, then made a defensive error or 2 and was benched the last 8 minutes of the game. Probably should've played more minutes. There are also rumors of Lee/Preston being portal bound which would be devastating for for the Horns.

Kinda my point....the NIL bag is based on just winning current games I guess for the donors--but it seems many of these young women see grass greener there, there...no over there. I mean some of them are going to earn big bucks, but others? The $$ can't be that great for the many middling players jumping into the portal. I guess simply more playing time is worth pulling up stakes and donning a new jersey in new colors, new locale, with new teammates.... Needless to say, I guess I should focus on my pro teams from now on in the WNBA and the PWHL....if I want pro sports, I'll watch pro sports.

Maybe she'll join Quadence at NC State. Could they use her?
I think she's likely to go to a mid major. She's still quite raw and has an extensive injury history. I don't see her being a contributor on a P4 tournament caliber team.

are you just as disgusted with the salaries that coaches make?

I keep hearing the out of control stampede of players to the portal is gonna slow down once everybody that had a chance to use the extra covid year is done with eligibility. I think we're there now, aren't we? Yet not the slightest slowing down of transfers. Which is exactly what I expected.

I agree it's disgusting and, as a fan, I hate this time of year. But I don't fault the players. They're just navigating a system they didn't create. "It's all about money." That's America. The schools and the NCAA made money off of the student-athletes for years; now the players are getting theirs. Looking at the average salary for a college grad (particularly when adjusted for inflation), a lot of these players can do a lot better even without a degree which they can always go back and get later. Here's hoping there will be some changes to the portal madness that helps to stabilize things.
